  • The dispersion and attenuation of Lamb and Leaky Lamb waves propagating in a 1 mm-thick steel plate were investigated. For acquiring a long(or large) range inspection capability, the fundamental symmetric and anti-symmetric wave modes(S0 and A0) over law frequencies were studied. Based on the dispersion curves, as well as pitch-catch and multi-mode simulations, it was shown that the S0 mode over law frequencies is the proper mode to minimize the dispersion and attenuation. In addition, it was shown that the S0 mode couldbe easily distinguished under multi-mode simulation since it has a larger group velocity than the A0 mode.

  • The movement of a ship is important for DBS(Direct Broadcasting Satellite) Receiving Antenna control algorithm design on shipboard. Especially, turning of ship is essential factor to affect the angle change of azimuth and elevation. Therefore, to track the satellite stably, we need the tracking method considering turning rate of ship. In this paper, we propose an effective satellite tracking algorithm for DBS receiving antenna on shipboard. In the proposed method, when a ship is turned, it selects one of the Multi tracking modes - Normal mode, Low speed mode, Middle speed mode and High speed mode - according as turning rate to be calculated by using Gyro sensor.

  • In this study, it is outlined that heavy weight floor impact noise induced by the vibration of slab can be reduced by multi tuned mass damper(MTMD) effectively. Substructure synthesis is utilized to develope analytical model of slab coupled with MTMD and acoustic power is introduced to evaluate the performance of noise control for simplicity. Numerical analysis is carried out to investigate the effect of the properties of MTMD on the vibration and noise control. Numerical analysis shows that mass ratio of MTMD is critical on the vibration and noise control of the slab and it is essential to reduce the vibration in higher modes of slab because it has a great effect on the radiation of sound.

  • In this study an approximate method based on the continuum approach and transfer matrix method for static and dynamic analyses of stiffened multi-bay coupled shear walls is presented. In this method the whole structure is idealized as a sandwich beam. Initially the differential equation of this equivalent sandwich beam is written then shape functions for each storey is obtained by the solution of differential equations. By using boundary conditions and storey transfer matrices which are obtained by these shape functions, system modes and periods can be calculated. Reliability of the study is shown with a few examples. A computer program has been developed in MATLAB and numerical samples have been solved for demonstration of the reliability of this method. The results of the samples show the agreement between the present method and the other methods given in literature.

  • This paper proposes a SM-CELP speech coder which applies different excitation signal according to the characteristic of speech segment at bit-rate below 4 kbps. Speech signal is divided with 2 modes such as stationary voice and etc. using the parameters of average energy of the short-time speech and the residual signal after long term prediction. Structured multi-pulse method is used for the excitation of mode-A and gaussian or pulse-like codebook for mode-B. 4.8kbps DoD-CELP are used to evaluate the performance of the proposed coder. As a result, the propose method shows 1~2 dB higher segmental signal to noise ratio and better subjectional quality without increasing the computational amount.

  • This paper presents a piezoelectric shunt methodology to reduce unwanted vibration of optical disk drive(O.D.D.). After briefly investigating a second-order mechanical vibration absorber model, the O.D.D. structure is incorporated with the piezoelectric shunt circuit. In order to evaluate feasibility of multi-mode passive damping of the structure, admittance measurement of piezoceramic is undertaken. The parameters are optimally tuned by admittance measurement results on the basis of the circuit model and displacement transmissibility is evaluated. To verify validity of admittance measurement result, experiment is performed and vibration reduction is achieved at two different modes.

  • There has been a recent surge of research interest on the smart structure. This paper presents active vibration control scheme of multi-mode forced vibration using piezoceramic sensors/actuators. The control scheme adopted is the Positive Position Feedback control. Among various vibration control techniques, PPF control technique makes use of generalized displacement measurements to accomplish vibration suppression. Two independent controllers are implemented to control the first and the second modes of the beam under external excitation. Experimental results for various damping ratio and feedback gains of the PPF controllers are compared with respect to the control efficiency. The results indicate that steady state vibration under wideband excitation can be controlled effectively when multiple sets of PZT sensors/actuators were used with PPF control technique.

  • In this paper, we study the cross-layer design for the AMC/HARQ-based wireless networks, and propose a new dynamic transmission-mode selection scheme to improve system spectrum efficiency. In the proposed scheme, dynamic thresholds for transmission-mode selection in each packet transmission and retransmission are jointly designed under the constraint of the overall packet error rate. Comparing with the existing schemes, the proposed scheme is inclined to apply higher modulation order at the first several (re)transmissions, which corresponds to higher-rate transmission modes thus higher average system spectrum efficiency. We also extend the cross-layer design to MIMO (Multi-input Multi-output) communication scenarios. Numerical results show that the proposed new dynamic transmission-mode selection scheme generally achieves higher average spectrum efficiency than the conventional and existing cross-layer design.

  • A multi-step optimum strategy for the selection of the locations and directions of strain gauges is proposed in this paper to capture at best the modal response of blade in a series of modes on fan blades. It is consist of three steps including two pass reduction step, genetic algorithm and fine optimization to find the locations-directions of strain gauges. The optimization is based upon the maximum signal-to-noise ratio(SNR) of measured strain values with respect to the inherent system measurement noise, the mispositioning of the gauge in location and gauge failure. Optimal gauge positions for a fan blade is analyzed to prove the effectiveness of the multi-step optimum methodology and to investigate the effects of the considering parameters such as the mispositioning level, the probability of gauge failure, and the number of gauges on the optimal strain gauge position.

  • A new flow mode of ER fluid available for controlling the damping force by using DME(Discrete Multi-Electrode) is presented in this study. Various characteristics about the flow of ER fluid through the experiment of ER cluster behavior visualization can be assumed. The pressure in electrode length and voltage division mode is measured. An actuator with a damping effect through DME ER damper will be developed. This damper controls the damping force by using the displacement and velocity of the plant which consists of the various electrode length and voltage modes without a controller in the real system.
