  • To elucidate the effects of alloying elements on the characteristics of microstructure and high temperature oxidation of cast austenitic stainless steel, a thermodynamic calculation, a cyclic oxidation test, a X-ray diffraction, a scanning electron microscopy-back scattered electron, a electron probe microanalysis were conducted. The thermodynamic calculation for the effect of vanadium (V) addition on the formation of various precipitates leads to a decrease of chromium (Cr)-rich $M_{23}C_6$ carbides due to the formation of M (C, N) carbo-nitrides containing V and / or niobium (Nb). The V added alloy increased the resistance to high temperature oxidation due to a decrease of Cr-depleted zone deteriorating the oxidation resistance and due to the V-enriched oxide layer formed in inner oxide layer blocking the outward transport of cations.

  • There are two types of noises in running the rail vehicle. The one is periodic by electric motors, dehumidifiers, and dusting machines. And the other is aperiodic squeal noise by the frictions between the wheels and the rail or the disks and pads. The periodic noises in rail vehicle have been reduced by changing DC motors to AC motors with silencers, and by improving the lubricants. However, almost nothing relating a periodic noise has been studied. In this paper, the experimental methods were applied to understand phenomena of the squeal noise, which was occurred by the friction variation due to aperiodic stick and slip with low repeatability in the process of dry friction of the disk and the pad when a rail vehicle was being braked. By the experimental acoustic test, it was found the specific frequencies relating the squeal noise. And by modal testing, it was measured the resonant frequencies in the disk and the pad-plate which were the components of the braking system, and in the whole braking system, and it was found the specific frequencies having the effects on the squeal noise.

  • The turn-to-turn short is one major fault of the motor faults of BLDC motors and can appear frequently. When the fault happens, the motor can be operated without breakdown, but it is necessary to maintain the motor for continuous working. In past research, several methods have been applied to detect winding faults. The representative approaches have been focusing on current signals, which can give important information to extract features and to detect faults. In this study, current sensors were installed to measure signals for fault detection of BLDC motors. In this study, the Park's vector method was used to extract the features and to isolate the faults from the current measured by sensors. Because this method can consider the three-phase current values, it is useful to detect features from one-phase and three-phase faults. After extracting two-dimensional features, the final feature was generated by using the two-dimensional values using the distance equation. The values were used in fuzzy similarity to isolate the faults. Fuzzy similarity is an available tool to diagnose the fault without model generation and the fault was converted to the percentage value that can be considered as possibility of the fault.

  • This paper proposes a new finite control set-model predictive control (FCS-MPC) method for induction motors. In the method, the reference state that satisfies the given torque and rotor flux requirements is derived. Cost indices for the FCS-MPC are defined using the state tracking error, and a linear matrix inequality is formulated to obtain a proper weighting matrix for the state tracking error. The on-line procedure of the proposed FCS-MPC comprises of two steps: select the output voltage vector of the two level inverter minimizing the cost index and compute the optimal modulation factor of the minimizing output voltage vector in order to reduce the state tracking error and torque ripple. The steady state tracking error is removed by using an integrator to adjust the reference state. The simulation and experimental results demonstrated that the proposed FCS-MPC shows good torque, rotor flux control performances at different rotating speeds.

  • High speed motors have been widely used in industries to reduce system size and improve power conversion efficiency. However, the high speed motors sometimes suffer from core losses caused by PWM current ripple; noting that the phase inductance, $L_s$, of high speed motor is smaller than that of ordinary motors. In the proposed topology, three PWM inverters are connected in parallel through nine coupled inductors. Compared to the PWM current ripple of the conventional single inverter system, that of the proposed scheme can be conspicuously reduced without the voltage drop at the inductors. In this paper a theoretical analysis of the output voltage of the proposed topology is presented, and then the validity of the proposed method is verified by experimental results.

  • A direct torque control algorithm for 3-level inverter-fed induction motors is presented. Conventional voltage selection methods provoke some problems such as stator flux drooping phenomenon and undersirable torque control appeared especially at the low speed operation. To overcome these problems, a proposed method uses intermediate voltage vectors, which are inherently generated in 3-level inverters. In the proposed algorithm, both subdivision of the basic switching sectors and applications of tntermediated voltages improve the low speed operation characteristics. This algorithm basically considers applications in which direct torque controlled induction motors are fed by 3-level inverters with low switching frequency around 500Hz. An adaptive observer is also employed to bring better responses at the low speed operation, by estimating some state-variables, motor speed and motor parameters which take a deep effect on the performance of the low speed operation. Simulation and experiment results verify effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

  • Recently, Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor(PMSM) drives are widely used for industrial applications due to its high efficiency and high power factor control strategy. PMSM generally have two classifications such as the SPMSM(Surface Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors) and IPMSM(Inter Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors). IPMSA has economical merits over SPMSM in higher speed range, mechanical robustness, and higher power rate by the geometric difference. The maximum torque operation in IPMSM is realized by the current angle control which is to utilize additional reluctance torque due to a rotor saliency. In traction, spindle and compressor drives, constant power operation with higher speed range are desirable. This is simply achieved in the DC motor drives by the reduction of the field current as the speed is increased. However, in the PMSM, direct control of the magnet flux is not available. The airgap flux can be weakened by the appropriate current angle control to demagnetize. In this paper, the control method of optimal current vector in IPMSM is described in order to obtain the maximum torque or maximum output with the speed and load variations. The applied algorithm is realized by the proto system with torque and speed control Experimental results show this approach is satisfied for the high performance servo applications. • Nowadays, global interest is being placed on research and development of smart clothing which is expected to create a high added-value industry in the future. The purpose of this research is to develop smart pants with vibrating massage functions that have excellent outer appearances and provide comfort to wearers and assess outer appearance, comfort, and massaging effects of smart pants. As the results of this research, smart pants where vibrating devices which are mainly composed of vibrating motor, controller, and switch are attached were completed. Vibrating motors were fixed on a thin and light non-woven fabric material, covered with a mesh material, and attached by snaps to the experiment pants. Switch was attached to the inside of a pocket, and batteries were positioned inside of pockets. Ten subjects marked their satisfaction of wearing smart pants on a 5-point scale. Noticeable changes in outer appearance when vibrating motors operate turned out to be low. Wearer's comfort in back waist and front thigh parts where vibrating motors were attached turned out to be high-satisfied. Massaging effects of smart pants turned out to be high. Attaching and detaching vibrating devices turned out to be convenient. Lining materials used for smart paints were effective in blocking electromagnetic waves generated from vibrating devices.

  • In flat panel display or semiconductor industries, they install the equipments with fine line width and high throughput for fabrication and inspection. The equipments are required to have the linear stage which can position the work-piece with high speed, fine resolution on wide range of motion. In this paper, a precision planar linear XY stage is proposed. The stage has a symmetric planar window configuration and is guided by air-bearings on granite plate. The symmetric planar window configuration makes the stage has robustness against dynamic and thermal disturbances. The air-bearings let the stage move smooth on straight guide bar and flat granite surface. The stage is actuated by linear motor with Halbach magnet array (HMA). HMA generates more confined magnetic flux than conventional array. The linear motors are optimized by using sequential quadratic programming (SQP) with the several constraints that are thermal dissipation, required power, force ripple and so on. The planar linear XY stage with the symmetric planar configuration and the linear motors is implemented and then the performance such as force ripple, resolution and stroke are evaluated.
