High-Precision Control of Magnetic Levitation System

  • In this paper, we address two position control scheme; the lead-lag control and the sliding mode control for a stage system, which is levitated and driven by electric magnetic actuators. This consists of a levitating object (called platen) with 4 permanent magnetic linear synchronous motors in parallel. Each motor generates vertical force for suspension against gravity and propulsion force horizontally as well. This stage can generate six degrees of freedom motion by the vertical and horizontal forces. Dynamic equations of the stage system are derived simply. The sliding mode control algorithm is more effective than the lead-lag control algorithm to reduce effects from movements and disturbances of other axis.

  • This paper proposes a new haptic device using a parallel mechanism with gimbal type actuators. This device has three legs actuated by 2-DOF gimbal mechanisms, which make the device simple and light by fixing all the actuators to the base. Three extra sensors are placed at passive joints to obtain a unique solution of the forward kinematics problem. The proposed haptic device is developed for an operator to use it on a desktop in due consideration of the size of an average Korean. The proposed haptic device has a small workspace for on operator to use it on a desktop and more sensitivity than a serial type haptic device. Therefore, the motors of the proposed haptic device are fixed at the base plate so that the proposed haptic device has a better dynamic bandwidth due to a low moving inertia. With this conceptual design, optimization of the design parameters is carried out. The objective function is defined by the fuzzy minimum of the global design indices, global force/moment isotropy index, global force/moment payload index, and workspace. Each global index is calculated by a SVD (singular value decomposition) of the force and moment parts of the jacobian matrix. Division of the jacobian matrix assures a consistency of the units in the matrix. Due to the nonlinearity of this objective function, Genetic algorithms are adopted for a global optimization.

  • Recently, as the feasibility study shows that trans-Korea railway and trans-continental railway are advantageous, interest in high speed railway system is increasing. Because railway vehicle is environment-friendly and safe compared with airplane and ship, its market-sharing increases gradually. Korean High Speed Train has been developed by KRRI for last 7 years to satisfy the need. Korean High Speed Train (350km/h), composed of 2 power cars, 2 motorized car and 3 trailer cars, has been developed and is under trial test. To verify the design requirements for the functions and traction performances of the train, KRRI (Korea Railroad Research Institute) decided to evaluate traction performances of the train during trial test. For this purpose, torque, velocity, voltage and current must be measured. KRRI has developed a measurement system that can measure vast and various signals effectively. In this paper, we introduce traction performances of Korean High Speed Train. The traction measurement items are focused on the verification of motor block performances.   • Various types of solid rocket motors which manufactured by each aim have their own shelf life. So they must be done away if not used. And inferior goods during manufacturing must be done away too. In the past, out burning and out detonation is usual but now, environmental pollution should be concerned so that there are related technologies and commercial plants in other countries already from 1970's. Hence in this paper, we will talk about foreign state and domestic development of solid rocket motor demilitarization using wash out.

  • In this study, we focused on development of the adhesive insulator using the case for solid rocket motors. Material of insulator used unvulcanized rubber based on EPDM/kevlar. In case of front insulator, preforms was made by using hot press molding, and then modified nylon film was inserted between two preforms for boots manufacturing. Rear insulator included cylinder part was embodied by only one mold with special designed and manufactured shape in the process. Boots part of rear insulator was obtained by cutting machine with hard-metal cemented carbide.

  • The rocket motor of the space launch vehicle offers thrust for satellite to enter into the orbit. Characters of the solid propellant for rocket motors are affected by the space conditions such as vacuum and space radiation. The solid propellant used for such a purpose should not undergo physical, internal ballistic and energetic changes when exposed to vacuum and space radiation. This study describes the development of the solid propellant composition for the rocket motor of the space launch vehicle. Also, experimental study was conducted on supersonic diffuser in order to verify the performance of the solid propellant composition which was applied to standard motor on the ground in the vacuum condition.

  • A unsteady internal ballistic analysis model was proposed to take account for the variance of local variance of pressure and velocity along the grain surface of a hybrid rocket combustor. The model of concern in the study was fairly comparable with the test result. The local variation of the oxidizer mass flow rate along grain surface results in chamber pressure, regression rate, and gas velocity change along its flow direction.

  • BLDC Motor is one of the widely utilizable motors in servo system. The accurate calculation of the power loss for the IGBT and Inverse diode with Bipolar and Unipolar switching modes the driving modes is important for the design of drives for their heat treatment. If it were not for temperature-sensors in devices, it is difficult to get direct power loss, so. Power losses may be modeled by computer modeling to obtain the Calculation of the Power loss for Inverter in BLDC Motor with switching modes which is presented in this paper. The computer modeling is carried out by Matlab simulation. The power loss consists of conduction losses Conduction losses are the source of occurrence due to The IGBT and Inverse diode currents. Switching losses are the source of occurrence due to switching on/off in the devices, and gives the dominant influence to the loss. As a result, the unipolar I mode is best in reducing the heat losses.

  • The stability issue of high temperature superconducting (HTS) racetrack coils is one of the most important factors for the development of large-scale rotating machines, such as ship propulsion motors and power generators. However, The stability and normal zone propagation characteristics of HTS racetrack pancake (RP) coils are not sufficient yet. In this study, quench tests for a GdBCO racetrack pancake coil were carried out under the condition of $LN_2$ at 77 K. Minimum quench energy and two-dimensional normal zone propagation velocities of the coil are also discussed. Normal zone propagation velocity in the coil's curved section is faster than in its straight section due to stress effects. The test results show that the protection of the straight section is of greater importance than that of the curved section when GdBCO racetrack pancake coils are applied to large-scale rotating machines.

  • Cryogenic cooling system for HTS electric power devices requires a reliable and efficient high-capacity cryocooler. A Striling cryocooler with a linear compressor can be a good candidate. It has advantages of low vibration and long maintenance cycle compared with a kinematic-driven Stirling cryocooler. In this study, we developed dual-opposed linear compressor of 12 kW electric input power with two 6 kW linear motors. Electrical performance of fabricated linear compressor is verified by experimental measurement of thrust constant. The developed Stirling cryocooler has gamma-type configuration. Piston and displacer are supported with flexure spring. A slit-type heat exchanger is adopted for cold and warm-end, and the generated heat is rejected by cooling water. In cooling performance test, waveforms of voltage, current, displacement and pressure are obtained and their amplitude and phase difference are analysed. Moreover, temperatures of cooling water, housing and linear motor are recorded and electric power parameters of driving circuit are also obtained. The developed Stirling cryocooler reaches to 47.8 K within 23.4 min. with no-load. From heat load tests, it shows cooling capacity of 440 W at 78.1 K with 6.45 kW of electric input power and 19.4 of % Carnot COP.
