This study aimed at understanding the experience in deciding for childcare of unmarried lone mother and searching for intervention methods through in-depth examination of the essence of the experience. To achieve this, the Colazzi analysis of phenomenological research was applied. The subjects of study were 7 unmarried lone mothers in early age of the twenties and thirties, who resided in an institution for unmarried lone mothers. An in-depth interview was held individually with them with question of "What is the experience in deciding for childcare as a unmarried lone mother" twice on the average from Nov. 2003 to Feb. 2005. The results found that a unmarried lone mothers' experience in childcare meant 'resurrection' through analyzing 22 themes and 7 theme clusters(confusion due to pregnancy, harsh feeling for reality suffering alone, feeling of love for a baby, mental conflict about childcare, decision toward childcare, firm in decision, hope for resurrection). Although the results of this study have the limitation of generalization due to phenomenological study, it will contribute to accepting and understanding mother-and-child families as one type of family rather than regarding them as being difficult or alienated in family and society, to recognizing the need of taking back their rights, and to suggesting intervention methods for unmarried lone mothers.
Gender and intelligence of children, parenting practices and socioeconomic status of parents were studied to investigate whether they functioned as protective factors for resilient children. Total of 556 children of 12 years of age were contacted for the study. Teachers were asked to rate the children's interpersonal competence. Children reported their experience of stressful life events on a checklist. Based on the competence scores and the experience of stressful life events, 107 children were classified into adaptive, resilient, and maladaptive group. IQ scores were assessed using an intelligence test for the 107 children. Mothers reported their parenting practices and their socioeconomic status through a questionnaire. Descriptive statistics, chi-squares, t-tests, and one-way ANOVAs were performed to analyze the data. There was no difference in their experience of stressful life events between boys and girls. Girls were rated as being more competent by their teachers. There were more girls in the adaptive and the resilient group and more boys in the maladaptive group. Children in adaptive and the resilient group had higher intelligence scores than the maladaptive group. Mothers of resilient children replied as being warm and acceptive and more refusing and controlling than mothers of the adaptive children Group differences in socioeconomic status of the family were not found. Thus, being a girl and having higher IQ scores were the protective factors for the resilient children.
The purpose of the phenomenological study was to explore the sense of pressure shown from the family adjustment experience according to mothers-in-law's perception and to enrich our understanding about multicultural families. In order to accomplish the purpose of research, 5 mothers-in-law with married immigrant women participated. Data were collected through in-depth interview. In addition, the data were analyzed by a Colaizzi's phenomenological analysis. The findings showed that the meaning of family adjustment experience in mothers-in-law with married immigrant women were identified as 31 themes and 7 categories. The 7 categories consisted of "The sense of pressure of son's marriage", "The sense of pressure of an unsatisfactory daughter-in-law", "The sense of pressure of unfair treatment by a daughter-in-law", "The sense of pressure of living with concerned son and his wife", "The sense of pressure of having a foreign daughter-in-law", "The sense of pressure of dependnet daughter-in-law's parents", "The sense of pressure of the future". Based on the findings, we discussed the meaning of family adjustment experience in mothers-in-law with married immigrant women. And lastly, this results made suggestions for the social welfare policies and practices for them and their families.
In this study, phenomenological methodology was used to understand the experience of family management style in mothers who have children with atopic dermatitis. For study methods, in-depth interview was conducted on 9 mothers residing in Seoul and the approach from phenomenological methodology by Colaizzi was used. As a result, 69 significant statements were deduced as well as 21 themes, 10 theme clusters, and 4 categories. These main categories include experiences of accepting atopic dermatitis as a reality, family management style for overcoming atopic dermatitis, reality of facing chronic fatigue, and hope and expectation for the child's health. Our study show that the intervention for improving family management style regarding atopic dermatitis is required including the enhancement of the mothers' quality of life and the recovery of family relationship.

This study aims to understand time experiences of mothers in child counseling and to investigate the meanings of their experience of time. Phenomenological perspectives and attitudes were adopted as the basic methodology. Participants were five mothers who were interviewed in depth on their time experiences in child counseling. The data were organized by the following contents : (1) Time for compensation, (2) conscious immersion, (3) stagnation, (4) infiniteness and finiteness of time, and (5) facing the past. Based on the results, the researcher interpreted three meanings discovered in the mothers' time experiences; (1) Reconstructed time : Healing, (2) The child becomes a mirror reflecting the mother, and (3) A new beginning.
The main purpose of this study was to examine the main and interaction effects of inhibition, day-care experiences and mothers' controlling child-rearing behavior on young children's social withdrawal in peer situations. A total of 62 young children(34 boys; 28girls) enrolled in day-care center and their mothers participated in this study. Data on child inhibition and parenting were gathered via questionnaires whereas the quality of day-care and social withdrawal were observed in the day-care center. As results, the quality of day-care and mothers' controlling child-rearing behavior were negatively related to social withdrawal. Further, both day-care entry age and the quality of day-care were served as an intervening variables between child inhibition and social withdrawal.
Although play is a key element in child development, little research has been done on how play is conceptualized by adults directly involved with children on a daily basis. The purpose of the study was to determine meanings of the concept "play" held by mothers of preschool children in Korea. Specifically, the study sought to determine Korean mothers' conceptions of the nature and functions of play, and their conceptions of play in contrast to work. An open-ended/semi-structured interview instrument was constructed to generate research data. Interview questions focused on three content categories: (1) the nature of play, (2) the functions of play, and (3) conceptions of work. Questions in each content category consisted of four distinct types: (1) experience/behavioral, (2) opinion/value, (3) feeling, and (4) knowledge. The instrument was pilot-tested with two subjects, revised, and administered to eleven mothers of preschool children. Interview data were subjected to domain and taxonomic analyses. Analyses yielded two principal themes: (1) Play is viewed as an intrinsically motivated and pleasurable activity; (2) while play and work could be consonant, the values inherent in play and work are generally in opposition.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore and develop a deeper understanding of the experiences of mothers of premature children receiving rehabilitation therapy. Methods: The participants were 12 mothers with premature children who had received rehabilitation therapy for over 1 year. Individual in-depth interviews were conducted from July to August 2017. The data were analyzed through the phenomenological research method. Results: The participants' experience was structured into five thematic clusters: 'Regret and guilt that premature birth led to rehabilitation therapy', 'Burden of life in an endless tunnel', 'Changes in personal relationships surrounding me and my child', 'Meaning of new life through my child', and 'Desire to expand the rehabilitation of premature infants'. Conclusion: The results of this study will be helpful for developing family-centered care programs for premature infants at high risk of developmental disorders.
Multiple features of infant day-care are explored, including age of entry, quantity, quality and stability of day-care. And relative contribution of day-care and family factors on maternal behaviors are examined. Data were gathered from 299 mothers who have infants aged under 36 months using self-report questionnaires. Results show that more than 40% infants enter day-care before 6 months of their life and about 85% of infants have far more than 30 hours of care a week. Half of the infants experience different day-care arrangements more than once. Compared to the other types of day-care, frequency of day-care arrangement change and quality of care are highest in private child-care centers. A series of Hierarchical regression results reveal that quality of day care is negatively related to mothers' control behavior whereas positively related to mothers' responsive behavior. But in general, family and child characteristics play a greater role in mothers' parenting behaviors than infant day-care characteristics.
