Multi-beam echosounder data and grain size analysis data of surface sediment were acquired and analyzed in order to investigate the shelf-to-slope morphology, geological character, and their geological controlling factors in the southwestern margin of the Ulleung Basin. According to the morphological character, the continental shelf can be divided into two parts: (1) shallow (~100 m) and steep ($0.5^{\circ}$) inner shelf, (2) deep (100-300 m) and gentle ($0.2^{\circ}$) outer shelf. The continental slope is featured with eight distinct topographic depressions of various spatial dimension (~121 $km^2$ in area) and head wall gradient (${\sim}24.3^{\circ}$). They are developed adjacent to each other and presumably formed by submarine landslides which have recurred under the strong influences of earthquakes and eustatic sea-level change. The inner continental shelf and the continental slope are dominated by fine-grained sediment, whereas the outer continental shelf is dominated by coarse-grained sediment. The surface sediment distribution seems dominantly influenced by eustatic sea-level change. The outer continental shelf is mostly covered by coarse relict sediment deposited during lowstand sea-level, while the inner shelf is covered with recent sediment during highstand sea-level. The surface of the continental slope is covered with fine-grained sediments which were supplied by hemipelagic advection process.

In this study, based on hydrolysis and condensation via $St{\ddot{o}}ber$ process of sol-gel method, synthesis of mono-dispersed silica nanoparticles was carried out with hydrophilic solvent. This operation was expected to be a more simplified process than that with organic solvent. Based on the sol-gel method, which involves simply controlling the particle size, the particle size of the synthesized silica specimens were ranged from 30 to 300 nm by controlling the composition of tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS), DI water and ammonia solution, and by varying the stirring speeds while maintaining a fixed amount of ethanol. Increasing the content of DI water and decreasing the content of ammonia caused the particle size to decrease, while controlling the stirring speed at a high level of RPMs enabled a decrease of the particle size. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) were utilized to investigate the success factors for synthesizing process; Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) was used to study the effects of the size and morphology of the synthesized particles. To analyze the dispersion properties, zeta potential and particle size distribution (PSD) analyses were utilized.
Ce-doped $Y_2$SiO$_{5}$ phosphor particles of spherical morphology, fine size, high crystallinity and high photoluminescence (PL) intensity were prepared by spray pyrolysis. When nitrate precursor solution is adopted, hollow particles were formed by uneven drying rate between surface and inside of droplet. Citric acid and ethylene glycol were introduced as polymeric precursor to control the morphology of particles. When polymeric solution is adopted, polymeric chain is formed by the esterification reaction between carboxyl and hydroxy groups of citric acid and ethylene glycol, and considered as controlling the drying characteristics of droplet. $Y_2$$SiO_{5}$ :Ce phosphor particles prepared from polymeric precursor solution were spherical, filled, fine size and not agglomerate before and after post heat treatment. The optimum doping concentration of cerium was 0.5 mol% of overall solution concentration. The optimum amount of TBOS of high PL intensity and pure crystallinity of X2-type $Y_2$$SiO _{5}$ was 105% of stoichiometric amount. The PL intensity of $Y_2$X$/_{5}$ :Ce phosphor particles prepared using the polymeric precursor solution was 164% of that of the nitrate precursor solution due to homogeneous composition and good morphology.y.
$Y_2O_3$ nanomaterials have been widely used in transparent ceramics and luminescent devices. Recently, many studies have focused on controlling the size and morphology of $Y_2O_3$ in order to obtain better material performance. $Y_2O_3$ powders were prepared under a modified solvothermal condition involving precipitation from metal nitrates with aqueous ammonium hydroxide. The powders were obtained at temperatures at $250^{\circ}C$ after a 6h process. The properties of the $Y_2O_3$ powders were studied as a function of the solvent ratio. The synthesis of $Y_2O_3$ crystalline particles is possible under a modified solvothermal condition in a water/ethylene glycol solution. Solvothermal processing condition parameters including the pH, reaction temperature and solvent ratio, have significant effects on the formation, phase component, morphology and particle size of yttria powders. Ethylene glycol is a versatile, widely used, inexpensive, and safe capping organic molecule for uniform nanoparticles besides as a solvent. The characterization of the synthesized Y2O3 powders were studied by XRD, SEM (FE-SEM) and TG/DSC. An X-ray diffraction analysis of the synthesized powders indicated the formation of the $Y_2O_3$ cubic structure upon calcination. The average crystalline sizes and distribution of the synthesized $Y_2O_3$ powders was less than 2 um and broad, respectively. The synthesized particles were spherical and hexagonal in shape. The morphology of the synthesized powders changed with the water and ethylene glycol ratio. The average size and shape of the synthesized particles could be controlled by adjusting the solvent ratio.

Controlling the dissolved oxygen (DO) in the fed-batch culture of the medicinal mushroom Ganoderma lucidum led to a 2-fold increase of the maximum biomass productivity compared with uncontrolled DO conditions. By contrast, extracellular polysaccharide (EPS) production was two times higher under oxygen limitation (uncontrolled DO) than under increased oxygen availability (controlled DO). Morphologically, dispersed mycelium was predominant under controlled DO conditions, with highly branched hyphae, consistent with the enhanced culture growth noted under these conditions, whereas in the uncontrolled DO process mycelial clumps were the most common morphology throughout the culture. However, in both cultures, clamp connections were found. This is an exciting new finding, which widens the applicability of this basidiomycete in submerged fermentation. In rheological terms, broths demonstrated shear-thinning behavior with a yield stress under both DO conditions. The flow curves were best described by the Herschel-Bulkley model: flow index down to 0.6 and consistency coefficient up to 0.2 and 0.6 Pa $s^n$ in uncontrolled and controlled cultures DO, respectively. The pseudoplastic behavior was entirely due to the fungal biomass, and not to the presence of EPS (rheological analysis of the filtered broth showed Newtonian behavior). It is clear from this study that dissolved oxygen tension is a critical process parameter that distinctly influences G. lucidum morphology and rheology, affecting the overall performance of the process. This study contributes to an improved understanding of the process physiology of submerged fermentation of G. lucidum.

Monodispersed flaky silver powder was obtained by controlling the ratios of $H_{2}O_{2}/NH_{3}$ and Agin in a mixed solution of ethylene glycol and ammonia with an addition of PVP. The effects of $NH_{3}/Ag,\; H_{2}O_{2}/Ag\;and\;H_{2}PtCl_{6}/Ag$ on its morphology and size were investigated. In $H_{2}O_{2}-NH_{3}-AgNO_{3}\;system,\;NH_{3}/Ag$ molar ratio was found to be an important reaction factor for the nucleation and crystal growth of Ag powder. The synthesis of flaky powder was optimized at over 6 of $NH_{3}/Ag \;and\;5\;of\;H_{2}O_{2}/Ag\;under\;1.0{\times}10^{-3}\;of\;Pt/Ag.\;Moreover,\;as\;the\; NH_{3}/Ag$ molar ratio increased, the size of precipitates was increased regardless of the amount of Pt. In the absence of $H_{2}PtCI$, the morphology and size of reduced Ag powder were found to be irregular in shape $2-4{\mu}m$ in diameter. However, homogenized fine Ag powder was obtained due to heterogeneous nucleation when $H_{2}PtCI$ used as a cat-alyst, and flaky one was synthesized with the addition of Pt over $1.0{\times}10^{-3}$ of Pt/Ag.

Hydrolysis of sodium borohydride provides a safe and clean approach to hydrogen generation. Having the proper catalytic support for controlling this reaction is therefore a valuable technology. Here we demonstrate the capability of hydroxyapatite as a novel catalytic support material for hydrogen generation. Aside from being inexpensive and durable, we reveal that Ru ion exchange on the HAP surface provides a highly active support for sodium borohydride hydrolysis, exemplifying a high total turnover number of nearly 24,000 mol $H_2$/ mol Ru. Moreover, we observe that the RuHAP support exhibits a high catalytic lifetime of approximately one month upon repeated exposure to $NaBH_4$ solutions. In addition to examining surface area effects, we also identified the role of complex surface morphology in enhancing hydrolysis by the catalytic transition metal covered surface. Particularly, we found that a polycrystalline RuHAP catalytic support exhibits shorter induction times for the initial bubble formation as well as increased hydrogen generation rates as compared to a single crystal supports. The independent factor of a complex surface morphology is believed to provide enhanced sites for gas release during the initial stages of the reaction. By demonstrating the ability to shorten induction time and enhance catalytic activity through changes in surface morphology and Ru content, we find it feasible to further explore this catalyst support in the construction of a practical hydrogen generator.

In this study, Mg films were prepared on hot dip aluminized steel (HDA) by using a sputtering method as a high corrosion resistance coating. The corrosion resistance of the Mg films was improved by controlling the morphology and the crystal structure of films by adjusting the Ar gas pressure during the coating process. Anodic polarization measurement results confirm that the corrosion resistance of the Mg films was affected by surface morphology and crystal structure. The corrosion resistance of the Mg coated HDA specimen increased with decreasing crystal size of the Mg coating and it was also improved by forming a film with denser morphology. The crystal structure oriented at Mg(101) plane showed the best corrosion resistance among crystal planes of the Mg metals, which is attributed to its relatively low surface energy. Neutral salt spray test confirmed that corrosion resistance of HDA can be greatly improved by Mg coating, which is superior to that of HDG (hot dip galvanized steel). The reason for the improvement of the corrosion resistance of Mg films on hot dip aluminized steel was due to the barrier effect by the Mg corrosion products formed by the corrosion of the Mg coating layer.

Physical properties of strontianite ($SrCO_3$) synthesized under variable conditions such as different ionic strength, temperature, and aging time were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). All synthesized samples show a single phase of strontianite. Crystallinity of the synthesized strontianite increases with increasing temperature and ionic strength with $NaNO_3$. Crystal sizes of the samples increase dramatically, and their morphology changes from rod or dendritic to prismatic shape as ionic strength and temperature of the solution increase. In addition, crystal sizes increase, and their morphology changes from rod or prismatic crystals to spheroidal aggregates with increasing aging time. These results suggest that changes in conditions of the synthesis for strontianite play an important role in controlling the crystallinity and morphology of results provide crucial information on the prediction for the physical properties of strontianite under different conditions during the formation of strontianite crystals.

In this work, the morphology of polyvinylidene-co-hexafluoropropylene (PVDF-co-HFP) membranes were systemically investigated using phase inversion technique, to target membrane contactor applications. As the presence of macrovoids degrade the mechanical integrity of the membranes and jeopardize the long-term stability of membrane contactor processes (e.g. wetting), a wide range of dope compositions and casting conditions was studied to eliminate the undesired macrovoids. The type of solvent had significant effect on the membrane morphology, and the observed morphology were correlated to the physical properties of the solvent and solvent-polymer interactions. In addition, to fabricate macrovoid-free structure, the effects of different coagulation temperatures, inclusion of additives, and addition of nonsolvents were investigated. Due to the slow crystallization rate of P(VDF-co-HFP) polymer, it was found that obtaining porous membrane without macrovoids is difficult using only nonsolvent-induced phase separation method (NIPS). However, combined other phase inversion methods such as evaporation-induced phase separation (EIPS) and vapor-induced phase separation (VIPS), the desired membrane morphology can be obtained without any macrovoids.
