In the our country, especially in Yeongil and Wolsung area, abundant authigenic zeolites are found from the tuffaceous sediments and volcanic rocks of Miocene age showing wide variation in their mineralogy and abundance from horizon to horizon. The principal zeolite species identified are clinopti-lolite. mordenite. heulandite. ferrierite, and erionite. etc. Zeolite minerals are widely used in many countries in the following applications; (a) in air separation adsorption processes; (b)as desiccants; (c)in inorganic building materials; (d)in papermaking; (e)in fertilizers; (f)as soilconditioners-this application is based upon the ability of the zeolite to ion exchange with soil nutrients; (g)in the treatment of radioactive wastes; and (h)as adsorbents for toxic gases, etc. In the present paper, using natural zeolite mordenite treated with IN hydrochloric acid or IN sodium chloride solution as column packings, separation characteristics of argon, nitrogen, carbon monoxide, and methane gases have been studied by gas chromatography. By the use of mordenite treated with hydrochloric acid solution, the tailing peak of methane showed from untreated mordenite was satisfactorily reduced, although it was difficult to separate it from carbon monoxide with a column activated at $300^{\circ}C$. Using a column activated at $350^{\circ}C$, methane could be separated from carbon monoxide easily but only carbon monoxide eluted as a bad defined peak. Mordenite treated with sodium chloride solution was generally similar to chromatograms obtained by using the untreated mordenite. Both the above chemical treatments of mordenite had little effect on the separations of argon and nitrogen. The separations and the HETP values obtained from natural zeolite mordenite treated with continuously hydrochloric acid and sodium chloride solutions were almost identical with those obtained with synthetic molecular sieve 5A zeolite. On the other hand, the efficiency of column was good in the range 20~3Oml/min of the carrier helium gas rate.
Natural zeolite rock of which dominent clay minerals were mordenite and clinoptilolite was collected from Wolsung, Kyungpook province. It was pulverized and sieved into four fractions of $1{\sim}0.5,\;0,5{\sim}0.25,\;0.25{\sim}0.1,$ and<0.1mm. The specific surface areas of its four fractions were determined by $H_2O$ and EGME. The specific surface area of zeolite was slightly affected according to species of measuring material, but was scarcely affected by partical size, nor increased of pulverizing. The surface area of zeolite was calculated from geometric structure of mordenite and it was compared with the specific surface area calculated from maximum numbers of $H_2O$ which could be adsorbed on mordenite. On the basis of that result, the specific area measured from zeolite was estimated to be a part of surface area calculated from it. Accordingly, it was suggested that a new method should be developed for the determination of an exact surface area of zeolite.
The effect of sodium hydroxide treatment on some physicochemical properties of zeolite mordenite mineral was studied with chemical analyses, powder X-ray diffraction, thermal analyses, infrared analysis, measurement of carbon dioxide adsorption and gas chromatography. Mordenite mineral from tuffaceous rocks in Yeongil and Wolsung area was used as a starting material and treated with 0.1-5N NaOH aqueous solution at about $95^{\circ}C$ in the water bath for three hours. At the concentration of sodium hydroxide below 0.5N, all chemical compositions in the tuff were virtually insoluble and the mordenite structure did not change. At the concentration above 1N, the chemical compositions such as silica, alumina, etc., were dissolved. The dissolution ratio of silica was lager than that of alumina, and the ratio of silica to alumina in the tuff decreased sharply in the concentration range of 2 to 3N. Intensity of X-ray diffraction peak of mordenite (202) plane and the adsorbed amount of carbon dioxide also decreased with the increasing concentration of sodium hydroxide above 1N. These decreases corresponded to the degree of mordenite structure collapsed. The separation of gas chromatography of nitrogen, oxygen and carbon monoxide was not affected by the sodium hydroxide treatment, but elution peaks of methane and krypton tended to be broadened and their retention time was shortened. The elution peaks of both methane and krypton tended to be overlapped with those of nitrogen and oxygen.
Of more than 30 varieties of zeolite group minerals, 7 varieties, mordenite, clinoptilolite, natrolite laumontite, stilbite, stellerite and chabazite are identified in Korea, whereas mordenite and clinoptilolite occur in Miocene sediments of small Yonil tertiary basin, east coast of Korea. The basin consists of three separate groups of sediments called Janggi, Gampo and Haseo, which are not correlated stratigraphyically yet. Zeolite occurs alternating with montmorillonite layers in Nuldaeri, Yongdongri and Haseori tuffs of Jahanggi, Gampo and Haseo Groups respectively. Zeolite was formed by diagenesis. of acidic volcanic tuffs.

The alkylation benzene with 1-dodecene of Mordenite, Zeolite ${\beta}$ and Zeolite Y was studied in the stirring batch reactor. The kinds of zeolites were found to have influenced the reaction conversion and distribution of phenyldodecane isomer in the product. Compared to the alkylation conducted over Zeolite Y and Zeolite ${\beta}$, the alkylation over Mordenite exhibited higher distribution of 2-phenyldodecane and the alkylation conducted over Zeolite Y and Mordenite, the alkylation over Zeolite ${\beta}$ exhibited higher distribution of heavy alkylate which formed through oligomerization reaction readily deactivated the Lewis acid sites. A special feature of the effect of the benzene to 1-dodecene ratio the reaction conversion and selectivity of phenyldodecane isomer was found. At alkylation of benzene with 1-dodecene over Zeolite ${\beta}$, when the catalyst content in the system was high, the reaction will reach the optimal conversion at the higher B/D. When the benzene to 1-dodecene ratio was high, the selectivity of phenyldodecane isomer is high. It was also found that at the similar reaction conversion there was the same product distribution regardless of D/C ratio.
Effect of Na2O/SiO2 molar ratio, calcining temperature and addition of NaCl were investigated on the hydrothermal formation of X-type zeolite from the natural mordenite, which is a kind of rock deposited abundantly in kuryong po. Pulverized mordenite was first mixed with NaOH or NaOH-NaCl solution, and crystallized under hydrothermal condition at 90~10$0^{\circ}C$ for 10 hrs. Optimum condition for synthesis of the X-type zeolite were \circled1 the ratio Na2O/SiO2, NaCl/Al2O3 and H2O/Na2O:0.68, 11.4 and 40, respectively, \circled2 calcining temperature of starting materials: 90$0^{\circ}C$, \circled3 aging time: 48 hrs. and \circled4 crystallization temperature: 10$0^{\circ}C$. The yield of X-type zeolite under the optimum condition was about 55~60%, and the major crystallized X-type zeolite was faujasite phase. Zeolite of then type X was crystallized when NaCl was added to treating solution with in the limit 14.25 of NaCl/Al2O3 molar ratio. As the calcination temperature (from 50$0^{\circ}C$ to 95$0^{\circ}C$) of starting materials increases, yield of zeolite x increase.
This study was performed to remove the dissolved benzene in water by using TMA-Zeolite complex which was formed by the adsorption of TMA(Tetramethyl ammonium), a kind of ration surfactant on a natural zeolite produced in Korea. The dorminant clay minerals of the natural zeolite was identified by X-ray diffractometry and Infrared spectrophotometry to be mordenite and clinoptilolite. The CEC of the zeolite used was 95.9 cmol/kg. TMA was adsorbed on natural zeolite very quickly, and the amount of TMA adsorption on zeolite was known to be equivalent to about 8% of the CEC of natrual zeolite. The amount of benzene adsorption on TMA-zeolite complex was much more than natural zeolite, indicating that the dissolved benzene in water could be removed effectively by TMA-zeolite comple.

Enormous amount of zeolite by-products as a fine powder have been produced while manufacturing commercial zeolite products. Granulation of the zeolite by-products is necessary in order for them to be recycled as soil conditioners or absorbent for various environmental contaminants due to the limitations inherent from their physical properties. We granulated the zeolite powders using Portland cement as a cementing agent and characterized the physical and chemical properties of the granulated zeolite product. The experimental natural zeolite had a Si/Al ratio of 4.8 and CEC of 68.1 $cmol_c\;kg^{-1}$. The X-ray diffractometry (XRD) revealed that clinoptilolite and mordenite were the major minerals of natural zeolite. Smectite, feldspar and quartz also existed as secondary minerals. Optimum conditions of granulated zeolite production occurred when natural zeolite was mixed with Portland cement at a 4:1 ratio and granulated using the extruder, left to harden for one month at $25^{\circ}C$ and treated at $400^{\circ}C$ for 3 hours. The wide spectra of XRD revealed that the granulated zeolite had amorphous oxide minerals. The alkali- or thermal-treated natural zeolite exhibited pH-dependent charge properties. The major minerals of the granulated zeolite were clinoptilolite, mordenite and tobermorite. The buffering capacity and charge density of the granulated zeolite were greater than those of natural zeolite.
Korean natura1 zeolite with fe1dspar and illite as impurities was purified by an air c1assification method. X-ray powder diffraction ana1yses showed that the air c1assification effectively separated zeolite and impurities, and reduce the amount of impurity of the natura1 zeolite. The zeolite with air c1assification was treated with 1N NaOH solutions at temperatures at 100, 150, 200 ℃ for 17hours. The obtained hydrotherma1 treatment of phase change to philli1site and ana1cime from mordenite and clinopti10lite.
In this study, the natural mordenite (MOR) zeolite seeds were used for the synthesis of high purity mordenite crystals. The effect of seed concentration and crystallization time on the phase purity and surface morphology of MOR crystals has also been reported. The diffraction, elemental and scanning analysis of MOR zeolite particles obtained from 100 g hydrothermal solution batch containing 3 g natural seed, hydrothermally treated at $140^{\circ}C$ for 72 h reveal the high phase-purity of as-synthesized sample having crystals of uniform size ($1-2{\mu}m$). Moreover, high seed concentration leads to the production of mesoporous MOR particles composed of needle shape primary nano crystallites. The gases adsorption performances of as-synthesized MOR particle were carried out at $25^{\circ}C$ and 0-1 bar. Surprisingly, MOR particles show good adsorption potential for $CO_2$ (97.19 mg/g) compared to other gases. Thus it confirms that high purity MOR particles can be synthesized without using any organic template which gives an advantage of separation performance at lower price.
