In this study, we investigate the predictability of intraseasonal monthly temperature and precipitation variations using hindcast datasets from eight global circulation models participating in the operational multi-model ensemble (MME) seasonal prediction system of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Climate Center for the 1983~2010 period. These intraseasonal monthly variations are defined by categorical deterministic analysis. The monthly temperature and precipitation are categorized into above normal (AN), near normal (NN), and below normal (BN) based on the σ-value ± 0.43 after standardization. The nine patterns of intraseasonal monthly variation are defined by considering the changing pattern of the monthly categories for the three consecutive months. A deterministic and a probabilistic analysis are used to define intraseasonal monthly variation for the multi-model consisting of numerous ensemble members. The results show that a pattern (pattern 7), which has the same monthly categories in three consecutive months, is the most frequently occurring pattern in observation regardless of the seasons and variables. Meanwhile, the patterns (e.g., patterns 8 and 9) that have consistently increasing or decreasing trends in three consecutive months, such as BN-NN-AN or AN-NN-BN, occur rarely in observation. The MME and eight individual models generally capture pattern 7 well but rarely capture patterns 8 and 9.

Over the last few decades, ensemble forecasts based on global climate models have become an important part of climate forecast due to the ability to reduce uncertainty in prediction. Moreover in ensemble forecast, assessing the prediction uncertainty is as important as estimating the optimal weights, and this is achieved through a probabilistic forecast which is based on the predictive distribution of future climate. The Bayesian model averaging has received much attention as a tool of probabilistic forecasting due to its simplicity and superior prediction. In this paper, we propose a new Bayesian model averaging method for probabilistic ensemble forecasting. The proposed method combines a deterministic ensemble forecast based on a multivariate regression approach with Bayesian model averaging. We demonstrate that the proposed method is better in prediction than the standard Bayesian model averaging approach by analyzing monthly average precipitations and temperatures for ten cities in Korea.
A monthly Ensemble Streamflow Prediction (ESP) system was developed by applying a daily rainfall-runoff model known as the Streamflow Synthesis and Reservoir Regulation (SSARR) model to the Han, Nakdong, and Seomjin River basins in Korea. This study first assesses the accuracy of the averaged monthly runoffs simulated by SSARR for the 3 basins and proposes some improvements. The study found that the SSARR modeling of the Han and Nakdong River basins tended to significantly underestimate the actual runoff levels and the modeling of the Seomjin River basinshowed a large error variance. However, by implementing optimal linear correction (OLC), the accuracy of the SSARR model was considerably improved in predicting averaged monthly runoffs of the Han and Nakdong River basins. This improvement was not seen in the modeling of the Seomjin River basin. In addition, the ESP system was applied to forecast probabilistic runoff forecasts one month in advance for the 3 river basins from 1998 to 2003. Considerably improvement was also achieved with OLC in probabilistic forecasting accuracy for the Han and Nakdong River basins, but not in that of the Seomjin River basin.

In this study, we have developed a forecasting model for city- gas acceptance. City-gas corporations have to report about city-gas sale volume next year to KOGAS. So it is a important thing to them. Factors influenced city-gas have differences corresponding to usage classification, however, in city-gas acceptence, it is hard to classificate. So we have considered tha outside temperature as factor that influence regardless of usage classification and the model development was carried out. ARIMA, one of the traditional time series analysis, and LSTM, a deep running technique, were used to construct forecasting models, and various Ensemble techniques were used to minimize the disadvantages of these two methods.Experiments and validation were conducted using data from JB Corp. from 2008 to 2018 for 11 years. The average of the error rate of the daily forecast was 0.48% for Ensemble LSTM, the average of the error rate of the monthly forecast was 2.46% for Ensemble LSTM, And the absolute value of the error rate is 5.24% for Ensemble LSTM.

In this study the validities of runoff prediction methods are reviewed around ESP (Ensemble Streamflow Prediction) techniques. The improvements of runoff predictions on Yongdam river basin are evaluated by the comparison of different prediction methods including ESP incorporated with qualitative meteorological outlooks provided by meteorological agency as well as the runoff forecasting based on the analysis of the historical rainfall scenarios. As a result it is assessed that runoff predictions with ESP may give rise to more accurate results than the ordinary historical average runoffs. In deed the latter gave the mean of yearly absolute error as to be 60.86 MCM while the errors of the former ones amounted to 44.12 MCM (ESP) and 42.83 MCM (ESP incorporated with qualitative meteorological outlooks) respectively. In addition it is confirmed that ESP incorporated with qualitative meteorological outlooks could improve the accuracy of the results more and more. Especially the degree of improvement of ESP with meteorological outlooks shows rising by 10.8% in flood season and 8% in drought season. Therefore the methods of runoff predictions with ESP can be further used as the basic forecasting information tool for the purpose of the effective watershed management.

In this study future wind resource maps have been produced under climate change scenario using ensemble regional climate model weather research and forecasting(WRF) for the period from 2045 to 2054(mid 21st century). Then various spatiotemporal analysis has been conducted in terms of monthly and diurnal. As a result, monthly variation(monsoon circulation) was larger than diurnal variation(land-sea circulation) throughout the South Korea. Strong wind area with high wind power energy was varied on months and regions. During whole years, strong wind with high wind resource was pronounced at cold(warm) months in particular Gangwon mountainous and coastal areas(southwestern coastal area) driven by strong northwesterly(southwesterly). Projected strong and weak wind were presented in January and September, respectively. Diurnal variation were large over inland and mountainous area while coastal area were small. This new monthly and diurnal variation would be useful to high resource area analysis and long-term operation of wind power according to wind variability in future.
In this study, we investigated the prediction skills of four multiple linear regression methods for monthly air temperature over South Korea. We used simulation results from four regional climate models (RegCM4, SNURCM, WRF, and YSURSM) driven by two boundary conditions (NCEP/DOE Reanalysis 2 and ERA-Interim). We selected 15 years (1989~2003) as the training period and the last 5 years (2004~2008) as validation period. The four regression methods used in this study are as follows: 1) Homogeneous Multiple linear Regression (HMR), 2) Homogeneous Multiple linear Regression constraining the regression coefficients to be nonnegative (HMR+), 3) non-homogeneous multiple linear regression (EMOS; Ensemble Model Output Statistics), 4) EMOS with positive coefficients (EMOS+). It is same method as the third method except for constraining the coefficients to be nonnegative. The four regression methods showed similar prediction skills for the monthly air temperature over South Korea. However, the prediction skills of regression methods which don't constrain regression coefficients to be nonnegative are clearly impacted by the existence of outliers. Among the four multiple linear regression methods, HMR+ and EMOS+ methods showed the best skill during the validation period. HMR+ and EMOS+ methods showed a very similar performance in terms of the MAE and RMSE. Therefore, we recommend the HMR+ as the best method because of ease of development and applications.
Korea Water Resources Corporation(KOWACO) has developed the Integrated Real-time Water Management System(IRWMS) that calculates monthly optimal ending target storages by using Sampling Stochastic Dynamic Programming(SSDP) with Ensemble Streamflow Prediction(ESP) running on the $1^{st}$ day of each month. This system, however, has a shortcoming: it cannot reflect the hydrolmeteorologic variations in the middle of the month. To overcome this drawback, in this study updated ESP forecasts three times each month by using the observed precipitation series from the $1^{st}$ day of the month to the forecast day and the historical precipitation ensemble for the remaining days. The improved accuracy and its effect on the reservoir operations were quantified as a result. SSDP/ESP21 that reflects within-a-month hydrolmeteorologic states saves $1\;X\;10^6\;m^3$ in water shortage on average than SSDP/ESP01. In addition, the simulation result demonstrated that the effect of ESP accuracy on the reduction of water shortage became more important when the total runoff was low during the drawdown period.

In this study, Andong Reservoir monthly and ten days inflows from July 2011 to September 2011 are predicted using SWAT model and ensemble technique. The weight method using monthly and ten days rainfall forecasts from Korea Meteorological Administration is applied for accurate analysis. If the rainfall prediction announced by Korea Meteorological Administration is close to the actual rainfall, the PDF-Ratio Method shows the best result. If the past high rainfall occurrence is close to the actual rainfall, the modified PDF-Ratio method shows the best result. This method can improve the prediction accuracy even though the Korea Meteorological Administration forecast is not accurate. On the contrary, if Korea Meteorological Administration forecast is different from the actual rainfall and the past rainfall occurrence statistics of lower section, the uniform method shows the best result.

The purpose of this study is to introduce the improvement of current operational climate prediction system of KMA and to compare previous and improved that. Whereas the previous system is based on GloSea5GA3, the improved one is built on GloSea5GC2. GloSea5GC2 is a fully coupled global climate model with an atmosphere, ocean, sea-ice and land components through the coupler OASIS. This is comprised of component configurations Global Atmosphere 6.0 (GA6.0), Global Land 6.0 (GL6.0), Global Ocean 5.0 (GO5.0) and Global Sea Ice 6.0 (GSI6.0). The compositions have improved sea-ice parameters over the previous model. The model resolution is N216L85 (~60 km in mid-latitudes) in the atmosphere and ORCA0.25L75 ($0.25^{\circ}$ on a tri-polar grid) in the ocean. In this research, the predictability of each system is evaluated using by RMSE, Correlation and MSSS, and the variables are 500 hPa geopotential height (h500), 850 hPa temperature (t850) and Sea surface temperature (SST). A predictive performance shows that GloSea5GC2 is better than GloSea5GA3. For example, the RMSE of h500 of 1-month forecast is decreased from 23.89 gpm to 22.21 gpm in East Asia. For Nino3.4 area of SST, the improvements to GloSeaGC2 result in a decrease in RMSE, which become apparent over time. It can be concluded that GloSea5GC2 has a great performance for seasonal prediction.
