A satellite communication (Satcom) antenna mounted on a moving platform provides a controlled heading that enables a geosynchronous satellite to communicate with the ground. A monopulse tracking method is effective for antenna control on a vehicle when it vibrates severely. However, this method has unexpected obstacles and its control performance is insufficient. To improve its control performance, the control command and monopulse error, the signal delay, and the radome effect are evaluated through tests. The authors then propose a method to transform the antenna error from 3D coordinates to 2D antenna coordinates. As a result, the antenna control performance is improved. As indicated in this study, examining antenna systems using the monopulse method on moving platforms is possible by understanding the antenna test process.

The radiation characteristics of a phased array antenna is changed according to the beam steering angle. The monopulse tracking system calculates the prediction angle using the radiation characteristics of antenna. Therefore, the monopulse ratio curve is changed according to the beam steering angle for the monopulse tracking system using a phase array antenna, and the tracking accuracy goes down. In the case of a single-channel monopulse system, the monopulse rate curve is controlled by the configuration variables of the system. In this paper, a simplified formula was presented for adaptive control of monopulse system configuration variables on beam steering angle. The presented formula can induce a uniform monopulse ratio curve for the beam steering angle as well as the phased array antenna design parameters.

This paper proposes a high-gain monopulse antenna using the folded reflectarray for a monopulse target-tracking radar systems designed at the center frequency of 94 GHz. In target-tracking radar systems, the angle of arrival of the incoming wave Is determined by comparing the signal received on two or more non-coincident antenna patterns. This is the physical basis of most target-tracking techniques and the comparison is made simultaneously in a monopulse radar systems. In this paper, the antenna consists of polarizing grid, reflectarray, multimode feed horn, and comparator implemented by wavguide. The antenna is able to have three radiation patterns by using the monopulse feed systems assembled by multimode feed horn and comparator. The antenna demonstrates maximum gains 36dB, 33.5dB and 27.2dB at sum mode, azimuth mode, and evevation mode respectively.

In this paper, the design method of a waveguide broad-wall longitudinal slot array monopulse antenna of X-type monopulse axes is presented, and the method is verified through manufacture and measurement. In the antenna design of this paper, the antenna size is small and the monopulse axes are X-type. Thus, the common continuous aperture distribution fuction is not suitable and the power balance among antenna quadrants should be considered. Also, since the waveguide height is reduced into 0.1 wavelength, the modelling of the slot characteristics is not simple. Thus, in this paper, the aperture distribution is optimized by using random number, and the balance among the quadrants is achieved by applying the quadrant weighting factor during the aperture optimization process. Also, the moment method procedure is accelerated by applying the interpolation technique to some part of the moment matrix, and the moment method procedure is added to the array synthesis program as a subroutine so that the slot characteristics can be calculated directly when it is required. Based on this method, a antenna of 28dBi is designed and manufactured. It is found that the antenna characteristics is similar to design data.

A cavity-backed microstrip patch antenna for a monopulse radar system is designed and fabricated. Also, this antenna is shown to be suitable for the system by analyzing the measured results. Since the azimuthal beamwidth required by this system is quite broad compared to that of a usual microstrip antenna, the width of a microstrip patch is reduced considerably. The decrease of an antenna bandwidth due to the reduced patch width is compensated by increasing the effective substrate thickness. A detection range and a detection probability is calculated from the measured gain at a given angle, and this result shows that the fabricated antenna can be applied well to this monopulse radar system.
The monopulse tracking algorithm can estimate the location of a partner station based on an RF (Radio Frequency) signal. The location of the partner station is estimated based on the monopulse ratio curve (MR-C), which is calculated based on the sum and difference signal patterns of an antenna. Therefore, the range in which the estimated location can be calculated with high accuracy increases in proportion to the linear region of MR-C. In this paper, we proposed a method to extend the linear region of the MR-C curve using the beamforming technique for the tracking antenna system using the active phased array antenna. Simulation results based on the same antenna system, it was confirmed that the linear region of MR-C was enlarged by about twice as much as the general case where the proposed method was not applied.

In this paper, dual-polarized monopulse cassegrain antenna for W-band millimeter-wave seeker was proposed and the performances were verified by the measured results of the fabricated antenna. Dual-polarized monopulse Cassegrain antenna consists of main/subreflector, dual-polarized feed horn and monopulse comparator. The proposed feed horn has $2{\times}2$ array square waveguide feeding structure to make monopulse signals and it was designed using 90 degree rotational symmetric structure to receive dual-polarized signals. At the sum and difference channel, the measured vertical and horizontal polarization radiation pattern were similar. Measurement gains are 35.1 dBi for v-pol. and 35.6 dBi for h-pol. at the center frequency with 0.5dBi difference between each polarization and the side lobe level is below -21.6 dB.
In this paper, we proposed a new W-band monopulse tracking system based on reflectarray antenna structure. The proposed reflectarray antenna monopulse tracking system consists of four feed horn antennas and a planar reflector using a microstrip reflectarray. The four feed horn antennas have a gain of 10 dBi and a half-power beam-width of 56 degrees symmetrically in the E/H plane. It was confirmed that the reflectarray antenna using one feed horn antenna has a size of 41.8 × 41.8 mm2, a gain of 26.8 dBi, and a half-power beam-width of about 5.6 degrees. The reflectarray monopulse tracking system using 4 feeding horn antennas is well matched from 75 GHz to 90 GHz, and the isolation is secured by more than 10 dB. Finally, the proposed system shows the tracking range of 5.98 degrees and the tracking error range was 0.02 degrees.

In this paper, the design of longitudinal shunt slot array monopulse antenna in the broad wall of waveguide for Ka band millimeter-wave seeker, Dip-Brazing method for fabrication and experiment results are presented. The proposed antenna consists of radiating slots by using Elliot's array synthesis procedure, probe-exciting feed structure for improving the return loss bandwidth and monopulse comparator. Element weigthings in the array have been calculated by continuous Taylor aperture distribution. Also, the simulation tool has been used to characterize the individual isolated slot, which has subsequently been used in Elliot's method to design the slot array efficiently. The designed antenna is fabricated using Dip-Brazing method. The gain of measured antenna is 28.4 dBi. Antenna beamwidth and side lobe levels are similar to the design result we expect.

Monopulse RADAR is the radar which detects the range of the target using a single transmitted signal. In this paper, using 9.41GHz X-band radar, the research for the phase comparison monopulse algorithm used in the marine environment is conducted. In addition, by applying the phase comparison monopulse algorithm, we calculate the RMSE for the various antenna spacings and the positions of the target. Based on that result, we compare the performance of the phase comparison monopulse algorithm in the uniform linear array with that in the non-uniform linear array. Finally, the differences in performance among the MUSIC algorithm, Bartlett method and the proposed phase comparison monopulse algorithm are analyzed.
