  • Optimal sensor placement (OSP) is an integral component in the design of an effective structural health monitoring (SHM) system. This paper describes the implementation of a novel collaborative-climb monkey algorithm (CMA), which combines the artificial fish swarm algorithm (AFSA) with the monkey algorithm (MA), as a strategy for the optimal placement of a predefined number of sensors. Different from the original MA, the dual-structure coding method is adopted for the representation of design variables. The collaborative-climb process that can make the full use of the monkeys' experiences to guide the movement is proposed and incorporated in the CMA to speed up the search efficiency of the algorithm. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is demonstrated by a numerical example with a high-rise structure. The results show that the proposed CMA algorithm can provide a robust design for sensor networks, which exhibits superior convergence characteristics when compared to the original MA using the dual-structure coding method.

  • The paper presents a multi-objective optimization strategy for a multi-type sensor placement for Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) of long span bridges. The problem is formulated for simultaneous placement of strain sensors and accelerometers (heterogeneous network) based on application demands for SHM system. Modal Identification (MI) and Accurate Mode Shape Expansion (AMSE) were chosen as the application demands for SHM. The optimization problem is solved through the use of integer Genetic Algorithm (GA) to maximize a common metric to ensure adequate MI and AMSE. The performance of the joint optimization problem solved by GA is compared with other established methods for homogenous sensor placement. The results indicate that the use of a multi-type sensor system can improve the quality of SHM. It has also been demonstrated that use of GA improves the overall quality of the sensor placement compared to other methods for optimization of sensor placement.

  • The flora of vascular plants in Geojedo revealed to be 550 taxa based on only the voucher specimens to be collected. It comprise 108 families, 341 genera, 478 species, 69 varieties and 3 forms respectively. Among them, 13 taxa of Korean endemics and 8 taxa of rare and endangered plants were investigated in addition to 75 taxa of specially designated plants announced by the Ministry of Environment. Furthermore, 36 taxa of induced and naturalized plants were also observed in this area. One of the characteristics of forest vegetation is the broadly occupation of Pinus thunbergii on whole area of Geojedo. Although it's well condition and conservation status, the destruction area of vegetation was rapidly increasing by the industrial development, the deforestation and the tramp as well as by the basic disturbances of human beings. Therefore, more active and positive conservation strategy such as expansion of conservation area should be prepared rapidly by the results of long-term monitoring studies.

  • Diffusion of information technology such as internet has brought a great influence on modern society and industrial development. Currently wide-spread RFID/USN technology has become a central momentum of this rapid changes for the establishment of ubiquitous society in the future. Historically agricultural products has drawn research interest due to its importance of human life. A standard monitoring system throughout of life cycle of the agricultural products should be developed and careful monitoring process should be introduced. In this paper, by way of case study, current lifetime tracing systems are evaluated and critical drawbacks and issues are also developed. In addition, some implications and guidelines to improve the tracing performance of the products are also suggested.

  • Purpose: This research is to find a solution for educational work on high blood pressure control in public health centers by analyzing their current status. Method: It analyzed data from 133 public health centers that had been doing educational work on high blood pressure, through a questionnaire. Also, it developed recommendations by converging opinions from an expert group made of 25 people with nominal group technique. Result: The educational methods of public health centers did not make any approach to get to the goal of the work. The mass media education and campaign activities for the general public had just temporary and passive propensities. In education for patients, it did not use appropriate methods to present management techniques for diagnosis process of patients, medication management, self monitoring BP, and risk factors. Pocket book for monitoring high blood pressure was not focused on self-recording for self-management. The expert group recommended that educational materials for adults should be developed focusing on treatments and observance of risk factors through daily living, and those for children should be focused on basic understanding about diseases, and life style. Conclusion: Presenting direction and strategy of fundamental education work is needed for public health centers by giving them standard educational guidelines of managing high blood pressure nationally, and it is desirable that fundamental frameworks of educational materials should be developed and distributed by professional groups nationally.

  • In the IMO COMSAR 10th meeting, the SOLAS performance standard draft for Long-range Identification and Tracking(LRIT) was submitted to MSC. '81 meeting for its approval. The LRIT and AIS would provide an important data in monitoring SOLAS vessels at shore. This paper aims to suggest the vision and future directions for a successful E-navigation development in co-orporation with vessel monitoring.

  • Condition-based maintenance(CBM) has been used as a useful concept for optimizing maintenance plan and decreasing maintenance cost in several kinds of plant sites. This study introduced an example that developed an integrated management system for maintenance parameters and hydraulic turbine of hydro-power plant in order to improve its maintenance strategy as applying CBM techinique. The integrated management system consists of three parts. One is a hardware part including PDA inspection system and several kind of precision measuring instruments. Another is a vibration monitoring system on hydraulic turbine. The other is a software part that takes charge of making hierarchy tree of maintenance parameters and their inspection route, managing accumulated database, assessing health condition of components, and supporting interface with other enterprise management system. The system has been installed at Chuncheon hydro-power plant for test and demonstration. It is expected that the system can contribute database construction for diagnostics and prognostics on facility health condition and systematic accumulation of know-how on operation and maintenance of plant.

  • One of the important things in low level radioactivity measurement is determination of the optimized counting time. Counting strategy has to be established, in order to count the radioactivity of the sample by condition of optimized measurement. There were three kinds of counting strategies in this report ; about fixed time, about fixed count, to compared sample, background, and reference level. The best of them was satisfied rendition to give about condition of instrument and process, as an example, efficiency of detector, counter capacity, maximum and average background count rate of counter, reference level and limit of derision and detection, etc. Therefore, we can decide the optimized counting time in the screening and monitoring. And we can save the time for courting the sample of course the data of count will be counted by optimized accuracy finally, in rountine measurement of radioactivity these strategies will be used available.

  • The changes of cosmetic industry regulation in the leading countries, such as E.C., America, Japan, initiated our research to suggest the direction of our cosmetics regulation. These countries are strengthening the post-monitoring system for the safety and cosmetic industry development. We propose the agenda for the development of the industry; the extension of cosmetics range, deregulation of the advertisement, implementation of the ingredient labelling, introduction of the product expiring date. Ultimately. it is necessary to introduce and extend current CGMP to enhance the company responsibility and to reinforce the post-monitoring.

  • Offshore structures are generally exposed to harsh environments such as strong tidal currents and wind loadings. Monitoring the structural soundness and integrity of offshore structures is crucial to prevent catastrophic collapses and to prolong their lifetime; however, it is intrinsically challenging because of the difficulties in accessing the critical structural members that are located under water for installing and repairing sensors and data acquisition systems. Virtual sensing technologies have the potential to alleviate such difficulties by estimating the unmeasured structural responses at the desired locations using other measured responses. Despite the usefulness of virtual sensing, its performance and applicability to the structural health monitoring of offshore structures have not been fully studied to date. This study investigates the use of virtual sensing of offshore structures. A Kalman filter based virtual sensing algorithm is developed to estimate responses at the location of interest. Further, this algorithm performs a multi-sensor data fusion to improve the estimation accuracy under non-stationary tidal loading. Numerical analysis and laboratory experiments are conducted to verify the performance of the virtual sensing strategy using a bottom-fixed offshore structural model. Numerical and experimental results show that the unmeasured responses can be reasonably recovered from the measured responses.
