  • Security and monitoring system has many applications and commonly used for detection, warning, alarm, etc. As the networking technology advances, user requirements are getting higher. An intelligent and cooperative surveillance system is proposed to meet current user demands and improve the performance. This paper focuses on the implementation issue for the embedded intelligent surveillance system. To cover wide area cooperative function is implemented and connected by wireless sensor network technology. Also to improve the performance lots of sensors are employed into the surveillance system to reduce the error but improve the detection probability. The proposed surveillance system is composed of vision sensor (camera), mic array sensor, PIR sensor, etc. Between the sensors, data is transferred by IEEE 802.11s or Zigbee protocol. We deployed a private network for the sensors and multiple gateways for better data throughput. The developed system is targeted to the traffic accident detection and alarm. However, its application can be easily changed to others by just changing software algorithm in a DSP chip.

  • This paper describes a monitoring system that examines water quality by analyzing behavioral patterns of fishes. The water quality inspection system (WQIS) captures color images of fishes with a CCD camera, extracts out fish regions from the images, and determines motion characteristics of fishes by computing consecutive frames. We define five types of measures that reflect behavioral patterns of fishes : floatness, fledness, clustemess, diffusiveness, and mobility. These measures are utilized when the system performs fuzzy inference to induce the conclusion about water quality. We believe that the proposed system can be a solution for securing clean water.

  • We present collections of optical photometry for a pre-main sequence star HBC 722. It showed large amplitude optical outburst (${\Delta}V=4.7$ mag) in 2010 and classified as a FU Orionis type object. We have been observing HBC 722 from 2011 April to 2013 May, using Camera for QUasars in EArly uNiverse (CQUEAN) attached to the 2.1 m Otto Struve telescope at the McDonald Observatory. Time-series monitoring data (minute-scale interval) were obtained in SDSS r, i and z bands to see short-scale behaviors as well as trace the long-term brightness changes after the eruption in 2010. Interestingly, it started to brighten from 2011 early summer and became brighter than the first outburst peak in our 2013 May observation. We expect that the recovering phase would result from re-increase of disk accretion rate, might attribute to distinctive short-scale color features. In this presentation, we report long- and short-timescale optical behaviors of HBC 722 in the post-outburst phase.

  • The aim of this study is to construct a machine vision monitoring system for an automatic visual inspection of weld joint in steel structure. An image processing algorithm for a visual weld defects detection on weld bead is developed using the intensity image. An optic system for getting four intensity images was set as a fixed camera position and four different illumination directions. The input images were thresholded and segmented after a suitable preprocessing and the features of each region were defined and calculated. The features were used in the detection and the classification of the visual weld defects. It is confirmed that the developed algorithm can detect weld defects that could not be detected by previously developed techniques. The recognized results were evaluated and compared to expert inspectors' results.

  • Non-intrusive methods based on active remote IR illumination fur eye tracking is important for many applications of vision-based man-machine interaction. One problem that has plagued those methods is their sensitivity to lighting condition change. This tends to significantly limit their scope of application. In this paper, we present a new real-time eye detection and tracking methodology that works under variable and realistic lighting conditions. Based on combining the bright-pupil effect resulted from IR light and the conventional appearance-based object recognition technique, our method can robustly track eyes when the pupils are not very bright due to significant external illumination interferences. The appearance model is incorporated in both eyes detection and tracking via the use of support vector machine and the mean shift tracking. Additional improvement is achieved from modifying the image acquisition apparatus including the illuminator and the camera.

  • MSC (Multi-Spectral Camera) system is a remote sensing instrument to obtain high resolution ground image. EOS (Electro-Optic System) for MSC mainly consists of PMA (Primary Mirror Assembly), SMA (Secondary Mirror Assembly), HSTS (High Stability Telescope Structure) and DFPA (Detector Focal Plane Assembly). High performance of EOS makes it possible for MSC system to provide high resolution and high quality ground images. Temperature of the EOS needs to be controlled to be in a specific range in order not to have any thermal distortion which can cause performance degradation. It is controlled by full redundant CPU based electronics. The validity of thermistor readings can be checked because a few thermistors are installed on each control point on EOS. Various kinds of thermal control logics are used to prevent 'Single Point Failure'. Control logic has a few set of database in order not to be corrupted by SEU (Single Event Upset). Even though the thermal control logic is working automatically, it can also be monitored and controlled by ground-station operator. In this paper, various ways of thermal control logic for EOS in MSC will be presented, which include thermal control mode and logic, redundancy design and status monitoring and reporting scheme.

  • The flux cored arc welding (FCAW) process is one of the most frequently employed and important welding process due to high productivity and excellent workability. The process is performed either as an automated process or as a semi-automatic process. In FCAW process, welding voltage has been considered as a qualitative indication of arc length. But it is necessary to let welding operators know, maintain and manage the arc length directly by estimating and displaying it. In this study, to develop arc length estimation technique, we measured a welding circuit resistance($R_sc$) and then we calculated welding circuit voltage drop($V_sc$). Also, we measured arc peak voltage($V_ap$). By subtracting $V_sc$ from $V_arc$, we can easily calculate net arc voltage drop($V_arc$). Consequently, we suggested arc length estimating equation and basic algorithm by regressive analyzing the relationship between net arc voltage drop($V_arc$) and real arc length(Larc) measured by high speed camera. Therefore, arc length can be predicted by just monitoring welding current and voltage.

  • Recent technological advance in UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) technology offers new opportunities for assessing crop situation using UAV imagery. The objective of this study was to assess if reflectance and NDVI derived from consumer-grade cameras mounted on UAVs are useful for crop condition monitoring. This study was conducted using a fixed-wing UAV(Ebee) with Cannon S110 camera from March 2015 to March 2016 in the experiment field of National Institute of Agricultural Sciences. Results were compared with ground-based recordings obtained from consumer-grade cameras and ground multi-spectral sensors. The relationship between raw digital numbers (DNs) of UAV images and measured calibration tarp reflectance was quadratic. Surface (lawn grass, stairs, and soybean cultivation area) reflectance obtained from UAV images was not similar to reflectance measured by ground-based sensors. But NDVI based on UAV imagery was similar to NDVI calculated by ground-based sensors.

  • To reduce winging scapula, various exercise protocols have been widely used by clinicians. Selective serratus anterior strengthening, and restoring balanced function, are especially recommended to reduce winging scapula. The purpose of this study was to investigate visual biofeedback using a real time video camera display system for monitoring scapular winging during arm lowering. For this study, 13 males with winging scapular were recruited during arm lowering. Electromyography (EMG) activity was recorded from the serratus anterior (SA) and upper trapezius (UT) of the right side and compared with normal EMG activity using a paired t-test. The study showed, through visual biofeedback, that EMG activity significantly increased in the SA and significantly decreased in the UT (p<.05). These results suggest that visual biofeedback can be recommended as an effective method for scapular eccentric control, to prevent scapular winging during arm lowering.
