The present study investigated experimentally and numerically the enhancement of absorption performance due to the waviness of falling film in the vertical absorber tube. The momentum, energy and mass diffusion equations were utilized to find out temperature and concentration profiles at both the interfaces of liquid solution and refrigerant vapor and the wall. Flow visualization was performed to find out the wetting characteristics of the falling film. The maximum heat transfer coefficient was obtained for the wavy flow using spring as an insert device through both numerical and experimental studies. Based on the numerical and experimental results, the maximum absorption rate was found for the wavy-flow using spring as the insert device. The differences between experimental and analytical results ranged from $5.0\;to\;25\%\;when\;Re_j>100$.
We simulate the particle bed motions with combustion and reduction in steel making rotary kilns. The particle bed motions are simulated by a Lagrangian approach called Discrete Phase Model (DPM). To reduce the number of tracking particles, the Coarse Grain Model (CGM) was applied. The model for particle motions showed good agreements with experimental results. In addition to the particle motion, the combustion and reduction simulation was performed. The combustion and reduction simulation can consider heat, mass and momentum transfer between the gas phase and particle beds.

Direct numerical simulation of bubble growth and merger process on a single nucleation site during partial nucleate boiling is performed. The equations governing conservation of mass, momentum and energy are solved using a finite difference method combined with a level set method for capturing the vapor-liquid interface. The level set method is modified to include the effects of phase change at the interface and contact angle at the wall. Also, a simplified formulation for predicting the evaporative heat flux in a thin liquid micro-layer is developed and incorporated into the level set formulation. Based on the numerical results, the bubble growth and merger pattern and its effect on the heat transfer are discussed.
Purpose: This study investigated the coordination and contribution of body segments during functioning. Methods: The relevant literature related to body segments and function were reviewed. Results: Efficient control of function is considered with regard to a participant's ability to perform a sequence of movements in body segments, which progresses from the head to the arm, trunk, pelvis, and leg segments. Each segment performs a specific role, which environment explorer using visual information for the head, reaching and grasping for the arms, a stabilizer for the trunk, and the distribution of COM in the pelvis and leg. Conclusion: During any of the movements, the momentum generated by the proximal segments is transferred to the adjacent distal segments in an appropriate sequence. In assessing function for clinical intervention strategies, the segment coordination, segment sequence, transfer of the center of body mass, asymmetrical ratio, muscle activity, and compensatory strategies should be considered.
In this study temperature distribution and gas flow inside a planetary type reactor in which a number of satellites on a spinning susceptor were rotating were analyzed using numerical simulation. Effects of flow rates on gas flow and temperature distribution were investigated in order to obtain design parameters. The commercial computational fluid dynamics software CFD-ACE+ was used in this study. The multiple-frame-of-reference was used to solve continuity, momentum and energy conservation equations which governed the transport phenomena inside the reactor. Kinetic theory was used to describe the physical properties of gas mixture. Effects of the rotation speed of the satellites was clearly seen when the inlet flow rate was small. Thickness of the boundary layer affected by the satellites rotation became very thin as the flow rate increased. The temperature field was little affected by the incoming flow rate of precursors.

This work aims to simulate three-dimensional heavy oil flow in a reservoir with heater-wells. Mass, momentum and energy balances, as well as correlations for rock and fluid properties, are used to obtain non-linear partial differential equations for the fluid pressure and temperature, and for the rock temperature. Heat transfer is simulated using a two-equation model that is more appropriate when fluid and rock have very different thermal properties, and we also perform comparisons between one- and two-equation models. The governing equations are discretized using the Finite Volume Method. For the numerical solution, we apply a linearization and an operator splitting. As a consequence, three algebraic subsystems of linearized equations are solved using the Conjugate Gradient Method. The results obtained show the suitability of the numerical method and the technical feasibility of heating the reservoir with static equipment.
The study was carried out by numerical integration based on the diffraction properties and elemental composition. The elemental compositions of breast tissues in the literature were tested. The photon attenuation coefficients calculated using the recent elemental composition were found within 0.2-16% for adipose tissue and within 0.04-17% for glandular tissue with the experimental reference data. The attenuation coefficients of cancerous breast tissue calculated according to the elemental content previously measured in breast cancer patients were found within 0-17% with experimental data in the literature. The attenuation coefficients are of great interest to medical research. To calculate realistic attenuation coefficients, the characteristic coherent scatter, which is most intense at small angles, must be considered. For this reason, experimentally measured form factor data were reviewed, and the most compatible one with the theoretical form factor data produced in this study was used at low momentum transfer x (0 < x ≤ 8 nm-1). The differential linear coherent scattering distributions were calculated for an energy value of 17.44 keV and compared with their experimental counterparts.

The purpose of this study was to assess the influence of spine orthosis and sit-to-stand motor strategies on ground reaction force (GRF) and lower extremity muscle activity. Twenty healthy adult men participated, and subjects randomly performed sit-to-stand motions in three different conditions: Momentum-transfer strategy (MTS); MTS with spine orthosis; and zero-momentum strategy (ZMS) with spine orthosis. GRF data, onset time, and muscle activity were determined and compared using force plate and electromyography. Data were statistically analyzed by the SPSS version 13.0. One-way repeated analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to determine the statistical significance, and least significant difference was used as a post hoc test. The level of significance was .05. The results of this study were as follows: 1. Peak GRF and relative time to peak GRF were not significantly different in the three different conditions (p>.05). 2. Onset time of four muscles, tibialis anterior, gastrocnemius, biceps femoris and rectus femoris, in the three different conditions were significantly different (p<.05). 3. The tibialis anterior and rectus femoris muscle activity before hip-off and tibialis anterior, gastrocnemius, and rectus fermoris muscle activity after hip-off were significantly different in the three different conditions (p<.05).
A mathematical model of vapor explosion propagation is presented. The model predict two-dimensional, transient flow fields and energies of the four fluid phases of melt drop, fragmented debris, liquid coolant and vapor coolant by solving a set of governing equations with the relevant constitutive relations. These relations include melt fragmentation, coolant-phase-change, and heat and momentum exchange models. To allow thermodynamic non-equilibrium between the coolant liquid and vapor, an equation of state for oater is uniquely formulated. A multiphase code, TRACER, has been developed based on this mathematical formulation. A set of base calculations for tin/water explosions show that the model predicts the explosion propagation speed and peak pressure in a reasonable degree although the quantitative agreement relies strongly on the parameters in the constitutive relations. A set of calculations for sensitivity studies on these parameters have identified the important initial conditions and relations. These are melt fragmentation rate, momentum exchange function, heat transfer function and coolant phase change model as well as local vapor fractions and fuel fractions.

The suitable turbulence model is found to be required in the course of establishing a proper analysis methodology for thermal stripping phenomena which are shown in strong temperature variation area such as reactors and propulsion devices. Three different turbulence models of $\kappa$-$\varepsilon$ model, modified $\kappa$-$\varepsilon$ model, and full Reynolds stress(FRS) model, are applied to analyze unsteady turbulent flows with temperature variation. Three test cases are selected for verification. These are vertical jet flows with water and sodium, and parallel jet flow with sodium. Analysis yields the conclusion that 3-D computation with FRS betters others. However, modified modeling is required to improve its heat transfer characteristic analysis. Further analysis is performed to find momentum variation effects on temperature distribution. It is found that the momentum increase results increase of fluid mixing and magnitude of temperature variation.
