The synthesis and reactivities of molybdenum carbide crystallites were examined in this study. Especially, the effect of synthesis conditions were scrutinized on the preparation of molybdenum carbide crystallites. In order to perform this purpose, various characterization techniques such as BET surface area and oxygen uptake measurements were employed for the synthesized molybdenum carbide crystallites. First of all, the molybdenum carbide crystallites were synthesized using molybdenum oxide crystallites and methane gas or methane-hydrogen mixture. The experimental results showed that BET surface areas ranged from $7.4m^2/g$ to $31m^2/g$ and oxygen uptake values varied from $8.1{\mu}mol/g$ to $24.3{\mu}mol/g$. The Mo compounds were found to be active for ammonia decomposition reaction. Even though there are some molybdenum carbide crystallites that were exceeded by Pt/$Al_2O_3$ crystallite, the steady state reactivities for other molybdenum carbide crystallites were comparable to or even higher than that determined for the Pt/$Al_2O_3$ crystallite. These results implied that molybdenum carbide crystallites could be one of the promising crystallites that might be substitutes for Pt-like noble metal crystallites in the petroleum processes.
In repaired weldment of ASTM A-470 class 8 high pressure stream turbine rotor steel, creep rupture life was studied in relation with carbide morphology. Carbides were identified using carbide extraction replica method. A retired rotor has molybdenum rich carbide $M_2C$, lndacochea vanadium rich carbide $M_4C_3$, and chromium rich carbides $M_{23}C_6$and $M_7C_3$. Weldments ruptured at ICHAZ showed that some of carbides have been transformed into spherical types of coarsened carbides at ruptured area. Those carbides were revealed as molybdenum rich $M_6C$ carbide and they provided cavitation sites due to molybdenum depletion around $(M_6C)$ carbide. However coarsened $M_6C$ and $M_{23}C_6$ carbides were observed at ruptured area in case of ruptured at CGHAZ.
The effects of silicon and molybdenum on the temperature-dependent properties of high silicon and high molybdenum ductile cast iron were investigated. Microstructure was composed of ferrite, cell boundary complex carbide, carbide precipitated in the grain and graphite. The number and size of carbide decreased with the increase of silicon content and increased with the increase of molybdenum content, however, the size of cell boundary carbide increased above 0.81wt%Mo. The room temperature tensile strength increased with the increase of silicon and molybdenum contents. That did not increase with the latter with more than 0.8wt%. Meanwhile the high temperature tensile strength showed the similar trend to that of room temperature one, that of the specimen with 0.55wt%Mo was the highest. The $A_1$ transformation temperature increased with the silicon and molybdenum contents, and showed similar tendency with the variation of strength. It was discussed due to the solubility limit of Molybdenum in ferrite, of which value was assumed to be in the vicinity of 0.81wt%Mo. The weight after oxidation at 1,173K showed the result caused by the difference in solubility of molybdenum in the matrix. That and the thickness change after oxidation did not show any consistent trend with the silicon and molybdenum contents.

Molybdenum silicide has gained interest for high temperature structural applications. However, poor fracture toughness at room temperatures and low creep resistance at elevated temperatures have hindered its practical applications. This study uses a novel powder metallurgical approach applied to uniformly mixed molybdenum silicide-based composites with silicon carbide. The degree of powder mixing with different ball milling time is also demonstrated by Voronoi diagrams. Core-shell composite powder with Mo nanoparticles as the shell and ${\beta}-SiC$ as the core is prepared via chemical vapor transport. Using this prepared core-shell composite powder, the molybdenum silicide-based composites with uniformly dispersed ${\beta}-SiC$ are fabricated using pressureless sintering. The relative density of the specimens sintered at $1500^{\circ}C$ for 10 h is 97.1%, which is similar to pressure sintering owing to improved sinterability using Mo nanoparticles.
The effects of the alloying elements and cooling rates on the formation of phosphide eutectics of compacted vermicular graphite cast irons containing copper, tin, molybdenum for producing pearlitic matrix, and also containing phosphorus and boron for increasing wear resistance, were investigated. The liquidus phosphide eutectic was found to solidify as a pseudo-binary phosphide eutectic, but with increasing of the cooling rate non-equlibrium phosphide eutectic with needle type carbide could be formed. However, the liquidus phosphide eutectic containing both phosphorus and carbide-forming boron was found to solidify always as a non-equlibrium phosphide eutectic with coarse carbide, independent from the cooling rate. It was also confirmed that the tiny isolated phase observed by SEM was gamma iron solid solution with phosphorus, silicon, molybdenum and the matrix containing these tiny islands was phosphide phase containing manganese and molybdenum. The addition of copper was found to decrease the tendency of forming ledeburitic carbides in the phosphide eutectic.

Abstract In this study, the Mo-Hf-O ingots containing 0.31-1.14at % Hf and 0.08-1.00at % 0 were prepared by plasma arc melting. The change of microstructure depending on the condition of heat treatmen~ was analysed by optical microscophy, auger electron microscophy, and transmission electron microscophy. Molybdenum powder with the oxygen content of 830ppm was compacted, and then melted. The oxygen content of molybdenum ingots was detected to be 40 -130ppm. As the contents of Hf and 0 increased, the grain size of ingots decreased. When molybdenum igot containing l.14at % Hf and 1.00at % C was heat treated, p-molybdenum carbide in grains was transformed into ${\alpha}$-molybdenum carbide at 130$0^{\circ}C$. Between 140$0^{\circ}C$ and 150$0^{\circ}C$, the precipitation of hafnium carbide was due to the reaction of solute Hf and C, and the hafnium carbide was saturated at grain boundaries at 150$0^{\circ}C$. When the sample was heat treated from 150$0^{\circ}C$ to 170$0^{\circ}C$, Hafnium oxide more stable thermodynamically precipitated both at grain boundaries and in grains after hafnium carbide had been dissolved at grain boundaries.
Carbon nanotube supported molybdenum carbide catalysts were prepared as a function of various preparation conditions and characterized, and their catalytic activities were compared through electrochemical oxidation of methanol. To overcome the low activity of a transition metal catalyst, carbon nanotube was used as a support, and the amount and the kind of precursors, acid treatment method, and carburization temperature were varied for the catalyst preparation. ICP-AES, XRD and TEM were used for the catalyst characterization. Based on the various preparation methods of carbon nanotube supported molybdenum carbide catalysts ($Mo_2C/CNT$), the size and the amount of supported catalysts could be controlled, and their effects on the electrochemical oxidation could be explained.

Graphene was grown on molybdenum (Mo) foil by a chemical vapor deposition method at different growth temperatures (1000℃, 1100℃, and 1200℃). The properties of graphene were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and Raman spectroscopy. The results showed that the quality of the deposited graphene layer was affected by the growth temperature. XRD results showed the presence of a carbide phase on the Mo surface; the presence of carbide was more intense at 1200℃. Additionally, a higher I2D/IG ratio (0.418) was observed at 1200℃, which implies that there are fewer graphene layers at this temperature. The lowest ID/IG ratio (0.908) for the graphene layers was obtained at 1200℃, suggesting that graphene had fewer defects at this temperature. The size of the graphene domains was also calculated. We found that by increasing the growth temperature, the graphene domain size also increased.

The temperature-programmed reduction of titanium oxide ($TiO_2$) with pure $CH_4$ was used for the preparation of titanium carbide crystallites. The synthesized materials had the different surface areas, indicating that the structural properties of these materials were strong functions of two different heating rates and space velocity employed. The titanium carbide crystallites were active for $NH_3$ decomposition. Since the reactivity varied with changes in the particle size, ammonia decomposition reactivity over the titanium carbides crystallites appeared to be related to the different active species. The reactivities of titanium carbide crystallites were two and three times lower than those of the vanadium and molybdenum carbide crystallites, respectively. These results suggested that the difference in activities might be related to the degree of electron transfer between metals and carbon.

Hardfacing layers of Stellite 6 alloy with different molybdenum content are deposited on AISI 1045 carbon steel using plasma transferred arc welding (PTAW). The properties of the hardfacing layer are investigated in order to clarify the effect of molybdenum addition to the cobalt-base alloy. With an increase in molybdenum contents, the size of Cr-rich carbides in the interdendritic region is abruptly refined, but volume fraction of the carbide slightly increases. Also, with an increase of Mo, $M_{6}$ C type carbides are formed instead of Cr-rich $M_{7}$$C_{3}$ type carbided, and this microstructural change enhanced the mechanical properties of Stellite 6 alloy.
