Water soluble hydroxyalkyl methycellulose ethers are used in a variety of applications incluing building industry as a supplementary agent used for incresing adhesives, water retention capacity, workability and viscosity modify. Water retention capacity(WRC) is the capability to contain water in the ploymer chain under condition of being mixed with cement. In general, the WRC is affected by the viscosity, the adding amount, the particle size, the rate of dissolving and the amount of substituted chemical in cellulose ethers. In the other words, WRC is increased as higher the viscosity, more adding amount, finer the particle size and longer the dissolving time of cellulose ethers. This thesis investigated each factor that effect the WRC, particularly the relation between degree of substitution(DS), molar of substitution(MS) and WRC. It is observed that WRC is not nearly affected by DS of cellulose ethers, but is changes proportionally as MS increases in the narrow range(0.10~2.25)
Various grades of hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC, MS 0.65-3.20) were prepared throngh reaction of the knit-cotton-waste with ethylene oxide(EO). The knit-cotton-waste was composed of 98% of $\alpha$-cellulose and 2% of other components, and the cellulose was highly pure. The molar ratio of EO to knit-cotton-waste and that of NaOH to knit-cotton-waste, and the agitation speed were the important factors determining the molar substitution(MS) during the preparation of HEC. The MS of HEC was remarkably increased with increasing molar ratio of EO' to knit-cotton-waste. When the molar ratio of EO to knit-cotton-waste was 3.5, that of NaOH to knit-cotton-waste was 1.25, and agitation speed was 450rpm, it was possible to prepare HEC of MS 2.5. The structure and crystallinity of HECs prepared were determined by FT-IR and X-ray diffraction.
Two kinds of N,O-hydroxypropyl chitosans (HPCTOs) with degree of substitution (DS) and molar substitution (MS) ranging from 2.15 to 2.39 and 2.9 to 4.1, respectively, and five kinds of aliphatic acid esters of HPCTOs (HPCTOAms, m=0,2,4,7,9, the number of methylene units in aliphatic substituent) based on the HPCTOs were synthesized, and the thermotropic liquid crystalline properties of the derivatives were investigated. All the derivatives formed enantiotropic cholesteric phases whose optical pitches (${\lambda}_m$'s) increased with increasing temperature. However, the glass and clearing temperatures, the magnitude of ${\lambda}_m$ of the mesophase at the same temperature, and the temperature dependence of ${\lambda}_m$ of the investigated derivatives highly depended on MS and m. The thermotropic mesophase properties of HPCTOAms were significantly different from those reported for the aliphatic acid esters of hydroxypropyl celluloses. The results indicate that the secondary amino group in the C-2 position plays an important role in the thermal stabilization and temperature dependence of ${\lambda}_m$ of the cholesteric mesophase.
Nine kinds of hydroxypropyl celluloses (HPCs) with degree of substitution (DS) and molar substitution (MS) ranging from 2.10 to 2.71 and 2.3 to 6.7, respectively and seven kinds of fully butanoated HPCs (BPCs) based on the HPCs with $2.3\;{\le}\;MS\;{\le}\;6.7$ were synthesized, and the molecular characteristics of HPCs and the thermotropic liquid crystalline properties of the derivatives were investigated. MS was nearly equal to DS for small value of DS, but it became exceedly larger than DS for $DS{\gtrsim}1$, showing that in the later stages of reaction, propylene oxide preferentially adds to the side chains rather than the main chain. All the derivatives formed enantiotropic cholesteric phases with right-handed helical structures. The glass and clearing transition temperatures of both HPCs and BPCs were decreased with increasing MS. The optical pitches (${\lambda}_m'S$) of BPCs, as well as HPCs themselves, increased with increasing temperature. However, the ${\lambda}_m'S$ of both HPCs and BPCs at the same temperature increased with increasing MS. Moreover, the temperature dependence of ${\lambda}_m$ of HPCs was weaker than that of BPCs, suggesting that the helical twisting power of the cellulose chain highly depends on the length and chemical structure of the side chain introduced in cellulose chain.
Four kinds of N,O-hydroxypropyl chitosans (HPCTOs) with degree of substitution(DS) and molar substitution (MS) ranging from 2.47 to 2.52 and 4.9 to 7.8, respectively were synthesized, and their molecular chracteristics and thermotropic and lyotropic liquid crystalline properties were investigated. MS was exceedingly larger than DS, showing that in the later stages of reaction, propylene oxide was preferentially added to the side chains rather than the main chain. All the derivatives formed thermotropic cholesteric phases. The glass and clearing temperatures were decreased with increasing MS. The optical pitches (${\lambda}_m$'s) of the thermotropic cholesteric phases increased with temperature. However, the ${\lambda}_m$'s of the derivatives at the same temperature increased with increasing MS. Solutions of HPCTOs in water, methanol, ethanol, acetic acid, and formic acid containing more than 30 wt% polymer also formed cholesteic phases whose ${\lambda}_m$'s decreased exponentially with increasing polymer concentration. The concentration dependence of ${\lambda}_m$ of HPCTO solutions, however, highly depended on the nature of the solvent and MS. The thermotropic and lyotropic mesophase properties of HPCTOs were significantly different from those reported for hydroxypropyl celluloses. The results indicate that the secondary amino group in the C-2 position plays an important role on the formation, stabilization, and temperature and concentration dependencies of ${\lambda}_m$ of the cholesteric mesophase.
Two kinds of (hydroxypropyl)cellulose(HPCs) with different molar substitution (MS) and three types of derivatives based on the HPCs: (acetoxypropyl)celluloses, (ethoxypropyl)celluloses, and (cyanoethoxyprofyl)celluloses were synthesized, and their thermal and mesomorphic properties were investigated. All samples, which exhibit cholesteric reflection colours at room temperature, formed right-handed helicoidal structures whose optical pitches (λ$_{ms}$ ) increase with temperature. However, the isotropization ($T_{i}$) and glass temperatures, the magnitude of λ$_{m}$ of the mesophase at the same temperature, and the temperature dependence of λ$_{m}$ of the investigated derivatives highly depended on MS and the length and structure of the side chain introduced in HPC. The results were discussed in terms of the difference in the polarity and flexibility of the substituents and the distance between the main chains. For all derivatives, Am values approached infinity at temperatures above the $T_{i}$, of the mesophase, and no reversal in the sense of the pitch with temperature was detected.
NiO-doped hibonite pigments were synthesized by the solid state method to get stabilized blue color pigment in both oxidation and reduction atmospheres. Optimum substitution condition with NiO for hibonite blue pigment was investigated. Experimental results were comparable to those of previous cobalt-minimization studies performed with other phosphate- or oxide-based cobalt-containing ceramic pigments (having olivine ($Co_2SiO_4$), spinel ($CoAl_2O_4$), or with co-doped willemite ($(Co,Zn)_2SiO_4$) structures). Composition was designed varying the NiO molar ratio increasing with $SnO_2$. The optimum substitution content is 0.93 mole NiO with 0.75mole $SnO_2$. The characteristics of the synthesized pigment were analyzed by XRD, Raman spectroscopy, SEM, and UV-vis. Synthesized pigment was applied to a lime-barium glaze with 10 wt% each and fired at an oxidation atmosphere of $1250^{\circ}C/1h$ and a reducing atmosphere $1240^{\circ}C/1h$. Blue color was obtained with $L^*a^*b^*$ values at 43.39, -6.78, -18.20 under a reducing atmosphere and 41.66, -6.36, -14.7 under and oxidation atmosphere, respectively.
The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of diets containing different amounts of wheat, as a partial or whole substitute for corn, on digestibility, digestive enzyme activities, serum metabolite contents and ruminal fermentation in beef cattle. Four Limousin${\times}$LuXi crossbred cattle with a body weight ($400{\pm}10kg$), fitted with permanent ruminal, proximal duodenal and terminal ileal cannulas, were used in a $4{\times}4$ Latin square design with four treatments: Control (100% corn), 33% wheat (33% substitution for corn), 67% wheat (67% substitution for corn), and 100% wheat (100% substitution for corn) on a dry matter basis. The results showed that replacing corn with increasing amounts of wheat increased the apparent digestibility values of dry matter, organic matter, and crude protein (p<0.05). While the apparent digestibility of acid detergent fiber and neutral detergent fiber were lower with increasing amounts of wheat. Digestive enzyme activities of lipase, protease and amylase in the duodenum were higher with increasing wheat amounts (p<0.05), and showed similar results to those for the enzymes in the ileum except for amylase. Increased substitution of wheat for corn increased the serum alanine aminotransferase concentration (p<0.05). Ruminal pH was not different between those given only corn and those given 33% wheat. Increasing the substitution of wheat for corn increased the molar proportion of acetate and tended to increase the acetate-to-propionate ratio. Cattle fed 100% wheat tended to have the lowest ruminal $NH_3-N$ concentration compared with control (p<0.05), whereas no differences were observed among the cattle fed 33% and 67% wheat. These findings indicate that wheat can be effectively used to replace corn in moderate amounts to meet the energy and fiber requirements of beef cattle.

Efforts are currently underway to develop a method for efficiently recovering lithium from the cathode material of waste lithium iron phosphate batteries (LFP). The successful application of lithium battery recycling can address the regional ubiquity and price volatility of lithium resources, while also mitigating the environmental impact associated with both waste battery material and lithium production processes. The isomorphic substitution leaching process was used to recover lithium from spent lithium iron phosphate batteries. Lithium was leached by the isomorphic substitution of Fe2+ in LFP using a relatively inexpensive ferric chloride etching solution as a leaching agent. In the study, the leaching rate of lithium was compared using the ferric chloride etching solution at various multiples of the LFP molar ratio: 0.7, 1.0, 1.3, and 1.6 times. The highest lithium leaching rate was shown at about 98% when using 1.3 times the LFP molar ratio. Subsequently, to eliminate Fe, the leachate was treated with NaOH. The Fe-free solution was then used to synthesize lithium carbonate, and the harvested powder was characterized and validated. The surface shape and crystal phase were analyzed using SEM and XRD analysis, and impurities and purity were confirmed using ICP analysis.

This study was carried out to obtain the basic data for producing higher functional coating agents for pulp mold by evaluating various kinds of starch derivatives. At that time, four kinds of starch derivatives were manufactured for making coating agents respectively. Physical properties of coated paperboards were tested. Conclusions obtained from this results were as follows. The water and oil resistance of hydroxypropylated, cyanoethylated and carboxymethylated starch were high when degree of molar substitution(DS) of propylene oxide, acrylonitrile and sodium monochloroacetate were 0.18, 0.07 and 0.009, respectively. Also, the those of crosslinked starch were high when degree of crosslinking of epichlorohydrin was 0.02. Consequently, $8\%$ solution of carboxymethylated starch made with DS 0.009 of monochloroacetate was the best among coating agents from starch derivatives mentioned above.
