Vibration-based method for story-level damage detection of the reinforced concrete structure

  • This study aimed to develop a method for the determination of the damaged story in reinforced concrete (RC) structure with ambient vibrations, based on modified jerk energy methodology. The damage was taken as a localized reduction in the stiffness of the structural member. For loading, random white noise excitation was used, and dynamic responses from the finite element model (FEM) of 4 story RC shear frame were extracted at nodal points. The data thus obtained from the structure was used in the damage detection and localization algorithm. In the structure, two damage configurations have been introduced. In the first configuration, damage to the structure was artificially caused by a local reduction in the modulus of elasticity. In the second configuration, the damage was caused, using the Elcentro1940 and Kashmir2005 earthquakes in real-time history. The damage was successfully detected if the frequency drop was greater than 5% and the mode shape correlation remained less than 0.8. The results of the damage were also compared to the performance criteria developed in the Seismostruct software. It is demonstrated that the proposed algorithm has effectively detected the existence of the damage and can locate the damaged story for multiple damage scenarios in the RC structure.

Impact of waste shredded tire inclusion on cement concrete pavement: A Numerical study

  • Previous research has identified inadequate flexibility in concrete pavements due to the use of high-strength concrete mixtures. This research investigates whether this problem can be addressed by partially replacing some fine and coarse aggregate components with waste rubber from shredded tires, the safe disposal of which otherwise is a major environmental concern. Using finite element software ABAQUS, this study analyses 3D pavement model behavior in terms of internal stress development and deflection at critical load points. This analysis is carried out for concrete slabs of differing waste rubber proportions and varying thicknesses. Results show that the maximum tensile stress is reduced, and maximum deflection is increased as the rubber content in pavement concrete slab is increased. The stresses and deflection of concrete pavement slab are reduced as the thickness of the slab is increased. The influence of increasing the base coarse modulus is significant in terms of reduction in tensile stress development. However, the reduction in deflection is found to be relatively marginal, especially in low-percentage rubberized pavement concrete slabs.

  • This paper aims to investigate the impact of interfacial debonding on modal dynamic properties such as frequencies and vibration mode shapes. Furthermore, it seeks to identify the specific locations of debonding in rectangular concrete-filled steel tubular (CFST) columns during the subsequent stage of the study. In this study, debonding is defined as a reduction in the elasticity modulus of concrete by a depth of 3 mm at the connection point with the steel tube. Debonding leads to a lack of correlation between primary and secondary shapes of vibration modes and causes a reduction in the natural frequency in all modes. However, directly comparing changes in vibration responses does not allow for the identification of debonding locations. In this study, a novel irregularity detection index (IDI) is proposed based on modal signal processing via the 2D wavelet transform. The suggested index effectively reveals relative irregularity peaks in the form of elevations at the debonding locations. As the severity of damage increases at a specific debonding location, the relative irregularity peaks would increase only at that specific point; in other words, the detection or non-detection of a debonding location using IDI has minimal effects on the identification of other debonding locations.

  • This paper related with the CR-MMA which is possible to improving the equalization performance by applying the concept of constellation reduction in the MMA adaptive equalization alogorithm in order to reduce the intersymbol interference that is occurred in the nonlinear communication channel. In the updating process of MMA adaptive equalizer, the error signal is being obtained by using the equalizer output, and the performance will be degraded by the increase the error signal in the high order QAM constellation. But by using the constellation reduction, the high order QAM signal will be changed to the 4-QAM signal constellation and then the error signal will be obtained. By doing so, the error signal will be minimized and it is possible to improve the equalization performance in the high order QAM transmitted signal. The Computer simulation was performed in order to compare the performance of the proposed CR-MMA algorithm and original MMA algorithm in the same communication channel and noise environment. For this, the recoverd signal constellation which is the output of equalizer, residual isi and MD (Maximum Distortion) learning curve which is represents the convergence performance and SER which is represents the roburstness of noise were used. As a result of simulation, the CR-MMA has more superior to the MMA. And it was confirmed that the CR-MMA has roburstness to the noise in the SER performance.

CCD PHOTOMETRY OF THE GLOBULAR CLUSTER M30 (구상 성단 M30의 측광학적 연구)

  • We present UBV CCD photomety of the metal-poor globular cluster M30. The data were obtained using the 40 inch telescope at Mt. Stromlo and Siding Spring Observatory (MSSSO). We used DAOPHOT CCD reduction package in order to obtain Color-Magnitude Diagram (CMD). We have derived some fundametal parameters of the globular cluster such as metal abundance ([Fe/H]), helium abundance (Y), and distance modulus (m-M) from the CMD. The derived parameters were [Fe/H]=-2.50, Y=0.28, and (m-M)=14.64. From the latter, the distance of 8.3kpc is obtained. Despite the photometric uncertainty near the main-sequence turnoff, we estimate the age of M30 to be 1.6${\pm}$3 Gyrs from the Revised Yale Isocyrones. If [O/Fe]=+0.4, this age will be reduced to 14.2${\pm}$3 Gyrs.

  • For each construction material used, there is certain theoretical limit in sizes. For tall building construction, the reduction in slab weight is the first step to take in order to break such size limits. In this paper, the feasibility of such objective is proven and given by numerical analysis result. For a typical building slab, both concrete and advanced composite sandwich panels are considered. The concrete slab is treated as a special orthotropic plate to obtain more accurate result. Any method may be used to obtain the deflection influence surfaces needed for this vibration analysis. Finite difference method is used for this purpose, in this paper. The influence of the modulus of the foundation on the natural frequency is thoroughly studied.

  • This study is a trial to make a design chart of sound insulation for multiple panel. Dilatational frequency, ${\Large f}_d$ becomes a key factor for optimal design since it acts like a turning point in sound insulation performance of such panels. Hence, in tuning the ${\Large f}_d$ optimally, elastic modulus of core material and thickness of the skin panel is designated to parameters. Based on these parameter, a design chart of sound insulation for multiple panel is made. Its applicability is proved by the case study of High noise reduction panel.

Circular Diamond Saw with Low Noise Shank (원형 다이아몬드톱의 저소음 생크)

  • An experimental and numerical approach has been carried out for to see the noise characteristics of a circular diamond saw. The noise level measurement result for the several kinds of shanks shows us that the noise level reduction in high frequency range could be an effective way to control the noise problem. Sandwich type shank whose center part is laminated with a low Young‘s modulus material greatly reduces the noise level. The noise level for the shank where several curve shaped slits are provided in the circumferential direction is reduced considerably too. The response spectrum analysis by the FEM shows us to be an alternative for predicting the noise characteristics of the shank.

A Proposed method of the Strength Calculation of Pipe Support (파이프 서포트의 내력 산정 방안)

  • Even though there is a guideline for the required strength of pipe support in inspection, it does not mean the nominal strength which can be used for the form work design. And, Concrete Specification defines that the pipe support should be designed according to the steel design guidelines but the design details are not provided, such as buckling length and the sectional modulus, etc. For the better prediction of strength of pipe support, the slenderness ratio of support which reflects the boundary condition should be considered. In this paper, the elastic buckling formula based on the slenderness is derived. The formula contains the strength reduction factor that consider the strength deduction caused by initial lateral deformation and is 0.65 consistently regardless of boundary conditions. And the coefficient of effective buckling length is calculated from the experiment.

Mechanical Characteristics of Recycled Structural Concrete with Fly Ash (Fly Ash를 사용한 구조용 재생 콘크리트의 역학적 특성)

  • Various of batches of recycled concretes were produced with different rations of recycled aggregate (20% and 50%) and admixtures based on workable range of slump value and using a fixed w/c ration. Mechanical characteristics of the recycled concretes were evaluated. Test results showed that, in general, relatively high strength recycled concrete could be obtained using a plasticiser. The concrete using fly ash showed somewhat reduced strength, lower elastic modulus and relatively high strain, in general. However, the strength reduction ratio of the recycled concrete due to adding fly ash was relatively minor, compared with normal concrete. Since it has been known that the fly ash is used in place of cement and gives an improved long term strength, a further study may be warranted for a possibility of using fly ash without degrading the strength required.
