  • Latex-modified concrete using ready mix concrete (R-LMC) was developed for application of building construction project (specifically, the rooftop of a parking garage unable to use heavy equipments for bridge deck overlay) due to three major outstanding properties of R-LMC; bond strength, resistance of cracks at early age, and resistance of freezing and thawing. However, R-LMC at the placement stage is required to be sufficiently cured because R-LMC is very sensitive to rate of evaporation of surface moisture. This study focused on effects of different curing methods and climate condition on cracks on the surface of hardened R-LMC considering the chart of rate of evaporation of surface moisture from concrete provided by American Concrete Institute in manual for placement of latex modified concrete.

  • Cracks on the surface of latex-modified concrete using ready mix concrete (R-LMC) are attributable to its sensitivity to air temperature, relative humidity and wind velocity. Insufficient curing under the windy condition causes plastic shrinkage cracks. The cracked areas should be replaced to prevent development of larger cracks. This paper investigated how the vibration resulted from crushing concrete for replacement of the partial cracked area affects bond strength of R-LMC at early age. To analyze bond strength of R-LMC, the commercial Finite Element (FE) program, ABAQUS Standard/Implicit version 6.12 was used, and bond strength was tested by ASTM C1583-04. The real vibration was applied to this FE model using an acceleration measurement equipment.

  • The effects of polymer-cement ratio and recycled aggregate content on the continuous void ratio, coefficient of permeablity, compressvie, tensile and flexural strengths of water-permeable polymer-modified concretes using recycled aggregate are examined. As a result, the continuous void ratio and coefficient of permeablity of the water-permeable polymer-modified concretes tend to decrease with increasing polymer-binder ratio. Regardless of the recycled aggregate content, the compressvie, tensile and flexural strengths of the water-permeable polymer-modified concretes wtend to increase with increasing polymer-cement ratio.

  • The flexural and compressive strengths of polymer-modified mortars containing FRP wastes were investigated. The specimens of polymer-modified mortars containing FRP mortat were perpared by using styrene-butadiene rubber(SBR) latex, ethylene-vinyl acetate(EVA) emulsion and polyacrylic ester(PAE) emulsion with various FRP-sand ratios(10, 20, 30, 40, 50wt%). The compressive and flexural strengths of polymer-mokified mortars containing FRP wastes were decreased with an increase of FRP-sand ratio. But the compressive and flexural strengths of PAE polymer-modified mortar were more improved than OPC, whereas those of SBR and EVA polymer-modified mortars containing FRP wastes were decreased than OPC.

  • In order to develop high performance concrete that overcome defects of asphalt and latex modified concrete for bridge deck overlay, this study aims to evaluate durability performance of concrete slab for bridge deck overlay. The present study is an exploratory research concerned with evaluation of two types of high performance concrete for bridge deck applications. This study is composed of a set of experiments, including static loading test and fatigue test and compared with data of defection, crack, concrete and steel strain. Also, experimental results were verified with analytical models by ABAQUS program. But overall behaviors of all specimens are comfortable, so those take sufficient load carrying capacity and high stiffness in cyclic load.

  • Recently, probabilistic neural network (PNN) has been proposed to predict the compressive strength of concrete for the known effect of improvement on PNN by the iteration method. However, an empirical method has been incorporated in the PNN technique to specify its smoothing parameter, which causes significant uncertainty in predicting the compressive strength of concrete. In this study, a modified probabilistic neural network (MPNN) approach is hence proposed. The global probability density function (PDF) of variables is reflected by summing the heterogeneous local PDFs which are automatically determined by the individual standard deviation of each variable. The proposed MPNN is applied to predict the compressive strength of concrete using actual test data from a concrete company. The estimated results of MPNN are compared with those of the conventional PNN. MPNN showed better results than the conventional PNN in predicting the compressive strength of concrete and provided promising results for the probabilistic approach to predict the concrete strength by using the individual standard deviation of a variable.

  • Latex modified concrete is governed by both cement hydration and polymer film formation processes in its binder phase. Such the reactions are expected to improve the polymer-cement co-matrixes themselves and the bond between the cement hydrates and aggregates, and to improve the properties of hardened latex-modified concrete. The purpose of this study was to study the strength and chemical resistance of Rapid-setting latex modified concrete(RSLMC) with the main experimental variables such as latex content(0, 5, 10, 15, 20%) and water-cement ratio(36, 38, 40%) at latex content 15%. Water absorption test was earned out to estimate water permeability resistance. Chemical resistance test was carried out to measure the weight change and to observe the appearance of RSLMC immersion in hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid, and calcium choloride.

  • Four precast concrete beam-column connectors for the apartment buildings were considered to develop a modified model which was adapt to domestic construction conditions from the DDC(Dywidag Ductile Connectors) of Germany. Special H-shape steel were used to decrease the width of column and beams for the construction of external frames of apartments. It was found that the DDC had high joint strength and ductility, however failed in x-shape crackings in the columns. The modified one showed better behaviors in tests because they did not show critical column crackings at failure. The test result of modified one with grouting were compared to that of the one without grouting within the duct. The one with grouting showed higher strength and ductility in failure than that without grouting.

  • Concrete is a material that will crack during its service life by its very nature. For bridge decks this is especially significant as these cracks allow accelerated ingress of chlorides and the subsequent corrosion of the reinforcing steel and deck deterioration. Very-early strength latex-modified concrete (below ; VES-LMC) was developed in order to realize early-opening-to-traffic bridge deck concrete. Although there has been little research to document the degree of cracking in VES-LMC overlay, there has been a general perception among highway agencies that overlay cracking of VES-LMC, particularly early-age cracking, is a one of problems which should be solved. The purpose of this study was to analyze the cause of map, transverse and longitudinal cracking in VES-LMC and to provide a control methods for minimizing the occurrence of cracks. The proposed prevention against map and transverse cracking was verified by field applications. VES cement was modified, the unit cement contents was reduced into $360kg/m^3$ from $390kg/m^3$, the maximum size of coarse aggregate was increase into 19mm from 13mm, wire mesh and steel fibers were incorporated in concrete mixture.

  • This study investigated the use of latex-modified sand concrete reinforced with sisal fibers (LMSC) as a repair material. Notably, no prior research has explored the application of LMSC for this purpose. This paper examines the interface bond strength and the type of failure between LMSC as a repair material and the normal concrete (NC) substrate utilising four different surfaces: without surface preparation as a reference (SR), hand hammer (HA), sandblasted (SB), and grooved (GR). The bond strength was measured by bi-surface shear, splitting tensile, and pull-off strength tests at 7, 28, and 90 days. Scanning electron microscopy analysis was also performed to study the microstructure of the interface between the normal concrete substrate and the latex-modified sand concrete reinforced with sisal fibers. The results of this study indicate that LMSC has bonding strength with NC, especially for HR and SB surfaces with high roughness. Therefore, substrate NC surface roughness is essential in increasing the bonding strength and adhesion. Eventually, The LMSC has the potential to repair and rehabilitate concrete structures.
