  • This paper presents an optimal design method for structure-borne durability of a vehicle body structure. Structure-borne durability design requires a new design that can increase fatigue lives of critical areas in a structure and must prohibit transition phenomenon of critical areas that results from modification of the structure at the same time. Therefore, the optimization problem fur structure-borne durability design are consists of an objective function and design constraints of 2 types; type 1-constraint that increases fatigue lives of the critical areas to the required design limits and type 2-constraint that prohibits transition phenomenon of critical areas. The durability design problem is generally dynamic because a designer must consider the dynamic behavior such as fatigue analyses according to the structure modification during the optimal design process. This design scheme, however, requires such high computational cost that the design method cannot be applicable. For the purpose of efficiency of the durability design, we presents a method which carry out the equivalent static design problem instead of the dynamic one. In the proposed method, dynamic design constraints for fatigue life, are replaced to the equivalent static design constraints for stress/strain coefficients. The equivalent static design constraints are computed from static or eigen-value analyses. We carry out an optimal design for structure-borne durability of the newly developed bus and verify the effectiveness of the proposed method by examination of the result.

  • Significant research efforts were undertaken to evaluate seismic performance of vertically irregular buildings on flat ground. However, there is scarcity of study on seismic performance of buildings on hill slopes. The present study attempts to investigate seismic behaviour of reinforced concrete irregular stepback building frames with different configurations on sloping ground. Based on extensive regression study of free vibration results of four hundred seventeen frames with varying ground slope, number of story and span number, a modification is proposed to the code based empirical fundamental time period estimation formula. The modification to the fundamental time period estimation formula is a simplified function of ground slope and a newly introduced equivalent height parameter to reflect the effect of stiffness and mass irregularity. The derived empirical formula is successfully validated with various combinations of slope and framing configurations of buildings. The correlation between the predicted and the actual time period obtained from the free vibration analysis results are in good agreement. The various statistical parameters e.g., the root mean square error, coefficient of determination, standard average error generally used for validation of such regression equations also ensure the prediction capability of the proposed empirical relation with reasonable accuracy.

  • The carburising surface modification treatment of the die steel has been used for improving wear resistance and heat cycle strength of the die and preventing a pitting on the surface because the carbides are forming in the matrix during carburising. Generally, the hot forging die was used after quenching-tempering treatment or nitriding after quenching-tempering treatment. The nitriding after carburising on the surface of a hot die steel and a wear resistance die steels was suggested by SOUCHARD, JACQUOT. and BUVRON. This surface modification treatment improved the adhesive and abrasive wear resistance and friction coefficient. The process was introduced to the forging die of stainless steel, titanium alloy steel, alloy and medium carbon steel and the physical properties of the die after the treatment were improved. The surface hardening treatment of the nitriding, the carburising, the boriding, and TD process were used to improved the life time of the forging die. Also, the coating process of PVD, CVD and PCVD were used and the hard chromium plating was occasionally used. Therefore, this study analyzed the effects of the carburising time and the conditions of nitriding on STD61 steel. The case depth, the surface hardness, the forming carbide size and shape during overcarburising process on the die steel were also examined.

  • The objective of the present study was to investigate the characteristics of the friction and wear according to the amount of ion-irradiation for the carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP). Unidirectional carbon fiber reinforced composites were fabricated with epoxy resin as a matrix and carbon fiber as a reinforcement, and its surface was modified by the ion-assisted reaction. When the amount of ion-irradiation was $1{\times}10^{16}$ $ions/cm^{2}$. the friction coefficients of composites were about 0.1 and the wear mode was stable. whereas, the friction coefficient of non-treatment composites were about 0.16 and the wear mode was very unstable. But if the amount of ion-irradiation was $5{\times}10^{16}$ $ions/cm^{2}$, the friction coefficients were higher rather than that of $1{\times}10^{16}$ $ions/cm^{2}$ Consequently. the amount of ion-irradiation was not in proportion to the friction coefficients, and it was conformed that the optimal conditions would exist between both of them.

  • The verification and improvement of the measurement uncertainty have beenperformed in the altitude test facility for small gas turbine engines, which was built atthe Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI) in October 1999. This test is performedwith a single spool turbojet engine at several flight conditions. This paper discussesthe evaluation and validation process for the measurement uncertainty improvements usedin the altitude test facility. The evaluation process, defined as tests before the facilitymodification, shows that the major contnbutors to the measurement uncertainty are theflow meter discharge coefficient, the inlet static and total pressures, the cell pressureand the fuel flow rate. The measurement uncertainty is focused on the primary parametersof the engine performance such as airflow rate, thrust and specific fuel consumption (SFC).The validation process, defined as tests after the facility modification, shows that themeasurement uncertainty, in seal level condition, is tmproved to the acceptable level throughthe facility modification. In altitude test conditions, the measurement uncertainties arenot improved as much as the uncertainty in sea level condition.

  • This paper present a summary of the results of statistical study of the ductility factor which is key component of response modification factor(R). To compute the ductility factor, a group of 1,860 ground motions recorded from various earthquake was considered. Based on the local site conditions at the recording station, ground motions were classified into four groups according to average shear wave velocity. Inleastic spectrum were computed for elastic perfectly plastic SDOF systems undergoing different level of inelastic deformation and period. Ductility factors were calculated by deviding elastic response spectrum by inelastic response spectrum. The influence f displacement ductility ratio, site condition, magnitude and epicentral distance on ductility factors were studied. The coefficient of variation was computed to evaluated the dispersion of ductility factors as the defined ratio of the standard deviation to the mean.

  • Reduction of optical losses in crystalline silicon solar cells by surface modification is one of the most important issues of silicon photovoltaics. Porous Si layers on the front surface of textured Si substrates have been investigated with the aim of improving the optical losses of the solar cells, because an anti-reflection coating and a surface passivation can be obtained simultaneously in one process. We have demonstrated the feasibility of a very efficient porous Si AR layer, prepared by a simple, cost effective, electrochemical etching method. Silicon p-type CZ (100) oriented wafers were textured by anisotropic etching in sodium carbonate solution. Then, the porous Si layer were formed by electrochemical etching in HF solutions. After that, the properties of porous Si in terms of morphology, structure and reflectance are summarized. The surface morphology of porous Si layers were investigated using SEM. The formation of a porous Si layer about $0.1{\mu}m$ thick on the textured silicon wafer result in an effective reflectance coefficient $R_{eff}$ lower than 5% in the wavelength region from 400 to 1000nm. Such a surface modification allows improving the Si solar cell characteristics.

  • Through this study, we investigate the effects of ultrasonic nanocrystal surface modification (UNSM) technology on the fatigue life of needle roller bearings. The fatigue life of untreated and UNSM-treated needle roller bearings is evaluated using a roller fatigue tester at various contact stress levels under oil-lubricated conditions. We can ascertain that the fatigue life of an UNSM-treated needle roller bearing was extended by approximately 34.3% in comparison with an untreated one, where the effectiveness of UNSM technology diminishes with increasing contact stress. The surface roughness and surface hardness of needle roller bearings before and after being treated by UNSM technology are compared and discussed to understand the role of UNSM technology in improving the fatigue life of needle roller bearings. In addition, a fractograph of the damaged bearings is observed using a scanning electron microscopy to shed light on the fracture mechanisms of bearings under different contact stress levels. We can therefore conclude that the application of UNSM technology to the needle roller bearings improves the fatigue life by reducing the friction coefficient and increasing the wear resistance; this may be attributed to a reduction in surface roughness from 0.5 to $0.149{\mu}m$ and an increase in surface hardness from 58 to 62 HRc.

  • In this study, we apply an ultrasonic nanocrystal surface modification (UNSM) technique to radial journal bearings (JBs) and disks made of SUJ2 and SCM440, respectively. We investigate frictional properties of untreated and UNSM-treated specimens using a ball-on-disk tester. We construct the Stribeck curve at the boundary, under mixed and full hydrodynamic lubrication conditions for the specimens using friction data obtained from JB tests. The friction at the boundary lubrication condition and the transition period to mixed lubrication condition on the UNSM-treated specimens is reduced, which improves the service life of JBs. The major effects of this reduction in the three lubrication regimes can be explained in the terms of improved mechanical properties and the presence of micro dimples. Moreover, we estimate the friction and fatigue properties of SCM440 specimens using a ball-on-disk specimen under dry and oil-lubricated conditions. Friction test results reveal that the UNSM-treated specimens show lower friction coefficient than the untreated specimens under both dry and oil-lubricated conditions. We evaluate the fatigue properties of SCM440 specimens by calculating the Hertzian stress with respect to the failure cycles. Fatigue tests results also reveal that the UNSM-treated specimens possess a longer fatigue life than the untreated specimens. The improved properties are effective in increasing the energy efficiency of bearings.

  • In the companion paper (II, Development of Site Classification System), new size classification system based on site periods $(T_G)$ was recommended for legions of shallow bedrock depth in Korea. Despite the site classification method was improved, the response spectrum would be required to be modified by adjusting the integration interval to calculate the site coefficients because the response spectra did not match well the average spectral accelerations obtained by site response analyses in the range of long periods. In this paper, new response spectra for each site categories were determined by adjusting the integration interval of long period site coefficient $F_v\;from\;0.4{\sim}2.0\;to\;0.4{\sim}1.5$ second. It matched well the average spectral accelerations and new response spectrum, and it was also improved compared to the current she classification system.
