  • Shear connectors are key components to ensure the efficient composite action and satisfactory transfer of shear forces at the steel-concrete interface in composite beams. Under hazardous circumstances, such as fire in a building, the performance of a composite beam significantly relies on the performance of shear connectors. Studies on the behavior of shear connectors subjected to elevated temperatures performed in the last decade are reviewed in this paper. The experimental testing of push-out specimens, the design approaches provided by researchers and different codes, the major failure modes, and the finite element modeling of shear connectors are highlighted. The critical research review showed that the strength of a shear connector decreases proportionally with the increase in temperature. Compared with the volume of work published on shear connectors at ambient temperatures, a few studies on the behavior of shear connectors under fire have been conducted. Several areas where additional research is needed are also identified in this paper.

  • In this paper, with a graphical approach, a series of stability charts for homogeneous slopes with benches are presented based on the upper bound limit analysis theory and strength reduction technique. The objective function of the slope safety factor $F_s$ is optimized by the nonlinear sequential quadratic programming, and a substantial number of examples are illustrated to use the stability charts for homogeneous slopes with benches driven by only the action of the soil weight. These charts can be applied to quick and accurate estimations of the stability status of homogeneous slopes with benches. Moreover, the failure modes and the formula for safety factor Fs of homogeneous slopes with benches are provided to illustrate the stability analysis of slopes with benches, which is validated by samples.

  • Bronchodilators are the cornerstone of symptomatic chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) treatment. They are routinely recommended for symptom reduction, with a preference of long-acting over short-acting drugs. Bronchodilators are classified into two classes based on distinct modes of action, i.e., long-acting antimuscarinics (LAMA, once-daily and twice-daily), and long-acting ${\beta}2$-agonists (LABA, once-daily and twice-daily). In contrast to asthma management, evidence supports the efficacy of both classes of long-acting bronchodilators as monotherapy in preventing COPD exacerbations, with greater efficacy of LAMA drugs versus LABAs. Several novel LAMA/LABA fixed dose combination inhalers are currently approved for COPD maintenance treatment. These agents show superior symptom control to monotherapies, and some of these combinations have also demonstrated superior efficacy in exacerbation prevention versus monotherapies, or combinations of inhaled corticosteroids plus LABA. This review summarizes the current data on clinical effectiveness of bronchodilators alone or in combination to prevent exacerbations of COPD.

  • Bacteriocins in Gram-positive bacteria have attracted much attention because many have a strong antimicrobial activity also against bacteria outside the genera of the producers. Lantibiotics and the pediocin-like bactericins have attracted most attention since they kill a broad spectrum of Gram-positive bacteria including important pathogens. But many other promising Gram-positive bacteriocins have been thoroughly characterized. Recent studies have shown that bacteriocins may playa role in the intestinal flora to protect us against the food-borne pathogens. Bacterial genome sequencing has demonstrated that there may be an arsenal of such compounds and we are only seeing the top of the iceberg. The present review gives a short outlook of the field of bacteriocins with focus on lactic acid bacteria and includes recent findings.

  • This paper describes implementation contents contents of manual/automatic complex redundancy control mothod for control of a modulation system of a Paging earth station in redundancy stracture. The existed redundancy control method usually is a automatic local control method in which the redundancy switching, including display or alarm beeping through operation of display devices or audio devices, is performed by the co-action of components or modules when the abnormal status is occurred in a modulation system. However, this method introduced in here is designed to enable use of three control modes;1) Manual mode by an operator, 2) Auto-remote mode by the Network Maagement System, through implementation of the redundancy control system composed of the redundancy control board and the redundancy switching circuit.

  • Due to the rapidly growing number of resistant strains of bacteria, the search for antibacterial agents with new modes of action will always remain an important and challenging task. Thus, the reaction of 2-substituted or. unsubstituted-4-(4-acetylanilino)-5,6,7,8-terahydrobenzo[b] thieno[2,3-d]pyrimidine derivatives 1-3 with the hydrazine derivatives, semi and / or thiosemi-carbazides, provided the corresponding hydrazones 4-6 and semi and/or thiosemicarbazones 7-9. Claisen-Schmidt condensation of compounds 1 or 2 with the appropriate aldehyde yielded the chalcones 10, 11 which, when treated with hydroxylamine hydrochloride gave rise to the isoxazoline-containing compounds 12, 13. Furthermore, reacting the respective chalcones 10, 11 with different hydrazines, urea and/or thiourea, furnished compounds 14, 15, 16, and 17 respectively. Representative compounds were tested for their antimicrobial activity against Candida Albicans and certain gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. Their MICs were then determined. Compound 15e, showed a broad spectrum of activity while most of the other com-pounds showed varying antimicrobial activity.

  • This study was designed to investigate the effects of nitric oxide on the neuronal activity of rat cerebellar Purkinje cells. Sprague-Dawley rats aged 14 to 16 days were decapitated under ether anesthesia. After treatment with pronase and thermolysin, the dissociated Purkinje cells were transferred into a chamber on an inverted microscope. Spontaneous action potentials and potassium current were recorded by standard patch-clamp techniques under current and voltage-clamp modes respectively. 15 Purkinje cells revealed excitatory responses to $20\;{\mu}M$ of sodium nitroprusside (SNP) and 4 neurons (20%) did not respond to SNP. Whole potassium currents of Purkinje cells were decreased by SNP (n=10). Whole potassium currents of Purkinje cells were also decreased by L-arginine, substrate of nitric oxide (n=10). These experimental results suggest that nitric oxide increases the neuronal activity of Purkinje cells by altering the resting membrane potential and after hyperpolarization.

  • Mutations in Ras GTPase are among the most common genetic alterations in human cancers. Despite extensive research investigating Ras proteins, their functions still remain a challenge over a long period of time. The currently available data suggests that solving the outstanding issues regarding Ras could lead to development of effective drugs that could have a significant impact on cancer treatment. Developing a better understanding of their biochemical properties or modes of action, along with improvements in their pharmacologic profiles, clinical design and scheduling will enable the development of more effective therapies.

  • It has been reported that kanamycin lowers osmotic fragility and mechanical fragility by ultrasonification of human red cells. In the present study, we therefore investigated effects of $Ca^{++}$, kanendomycin and kanamycin on stearic acid monolayer using a langmuir trough and found fellowing results 1) $Ca^{++}$ added to the subphase condensed stearic acid monolayer, confirming earlier reports. 2) Likewise, kanendomycin and kanamycin condensed the stearic acid monolayer, the effects being dose dependent. The possible modes of action of kanamycin and kanendomycin on biological membrane were discussed and compared with those of $Ca^{++}$ and local anesthetics
