A Study on the Coast Topography using Real-Time Kinematics GPS and Echo Sounder

  • This research aims at investigation of accuracy potential of RTK(Real-Time Kinematic) GPS in combination with Echo Sounder(E/S) for the coastal mapping. Apart from this purpose, the accuracy of ambiguity resolution with the OTF(On The Fly) method was tested with respect to the initialization time. The result shows that the accuracy is better than 1cm with 5-minute initialization in the distance of 10km baseline. The seaside topography was measured by the RTK GPS only, on the other hand the seafloor topography was surveyed in combination of RTK GPS and E/S. Comparing to the volume of seaside measured by RTK GPS and digital topographical map, the difference of only $2\%$ was achieved. This indicates that the coastal mapping. As a result, it has been revealed that every possible noise in surveying could be corrected and the accuracy could be improved. The accuracy of GPS data acquired in real time was as good as that acquired by post processing. It is expected that it will be useful for the analysis of coastal geographic characteristics because DTM(Digital Terrain Model) can be also constructed for the harbor reclamation, the dredging, and the variation of soil movement in a river.

Development and Assessment of Dynamical Seasonal Forecast System Using the Cryospheric Variables (빙권요소를 활용한 겨울철 역학 계절예측 시스템의 개발 및 검증)

  • A dynamical seasonal prediction system for boreal winter utilizing cryospheric information was developed. Using the Community Atmospheric Model, version3, (CAM3) as a modeling system, newly developed snow depth initialization method and sea ice concentration treatment were implemented to the seasonal prediction system. Daily snow depth analysis field was scaled in order to prevent climate drift problem before initializing model's snow fields and distributed to the model snow-depth layers. To maximize predictability gain from land surface, we applied one-month-long training procedure to the prediction system, which adjusts soil moisture and soil temperature to the imposed snow depth. The sea ice concentration over the Arctic region for prediction period was prescribed with an anomaly-persistent method that considers seasonality of sea ice. Ensemble hindcast experiments starting at 1st of November for the period 1999~2000 were performed and the predictability gain from the imposed cryospheric informations were tested. Large potential predictability gain from the snow information was obtained over large part of high-latitude and of mid-latitude land as a result of strengthened land-atmosphere interaction in the modeling system. Large-scale atmospheric circulation responses associated with the sea ice concentration anomalies were main contributor to the predictability gain.

Assessment on the East Asian Summer Monsoon Simulation by Improved Global Coupled (GC) Model (Global Coupled (GC) 모델 개선에 따른 동아시아 여름 몬순 모의성능 평가)

  • The performance of East Asian summer monsoon is assessed for GC2 and GC3.1, which are climate change models of the current and next climate prediction system in the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA), GloSea5 and GloSea6. The most pronounced characteristics of GC models are strong monsoon trough and the weakening of the Western North Pacific Subtropical High (WNPSH). These are related to the weakening of the southwesterly wind and resulting weak monsoon band toward the Korean Peninsula. The GC3.1 is known to have improved the model configuration version compared to GC2, such as cloud physics and ocean parameters. We can confirm that the overall improvements of GC3.1 against GC2, especially in pressure, 850 hPa wind fields, and vertical wind shear. Also, the precipitation band stagnant in the south of 30°N in late spring is improved, therefore the biases of rainy onset and withdrawal on the Korean Peninsula are reduced by 2~4 pentad. We also investigate the impact of initialization in comparison with GloSea5 hindcast. Compared with GCs, hindcast results show better simulation within 1 month lead time, especially in pressure and 850 hPa wind fields, which can be expected to the improvement of WNPSH. Therefore, it is expected that the simulation performance of WNPSH will be improved in the result of applying the initialization of GloSea6.

Adaptive Active Contour Model: a Localized Mutual Information Approach for Medical Image Segmentation

  • Troubles are often met when traditional active contours extract boundaries of medical images with inhomogeneous bias and various noises. Focusing on such a circumstance, a localized mutual information active contour model is discussed in the paper. By defining neighborhood of each point on the level set, mutual information is introduced to describe the relationship between the zero level set and image field. A driving energy term is then generated by integrating all the information. In addition, an expanding energy and internal energy are designed to regularize the driving energy. Contrary to piecewise constant model, new model has a better command of driving the contours without initialization.

  • In this paper, we formulate the extended Kalman filter for calibration of gimballed inertial navigation system (GINS) at a pure navigation mode with 1500 ft/sec initial velocity and compare its performance to the linear Kalman filter's by using Monte-Carlo analysis method. It has been shown that estimation performance of the extended Kalman filter is better than that of the linear Kalman filter.

  • This paper presents a scheme for continuous-time fuzzy modelling of nonlinear systems, based on the adjustment technique and the genetic algorithm technque. The fuzzy model is characterized by fuzzy "If-then" rules whcih represent locally linear input-output relations whose consequence part is defined as subsystem of a nonlinear system. To compute the final output and deal with the initialization and unmeasurable signal problems in on-line estimatio of the fuzzy model, a discrete-time model is obtaned. Then the parameters of both the premis and consequence of the fuzzy model are adjusted on-line by a genetic algorithm. A simulation work is carried out to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.ed method.

  • In this paper, we developed visual tracking algorithm using double active bar. The active bar model to represent the object can reduce the search space of energy surface and better performance than those of snake model. However, the contour will not find global equilibrium when driving force caused by image may be weak. To overcome this problem. Double active bar is proposed for finding the global minimum point without any dependence on initialization. To achieve the goal, an deformable model with two initial contours in attempted to search for a global minimum within two specific initial contours. This approach improve the performance of finding the contour of target. To evaluate the performance, some experiments are executed. We can achieved the good result for tracking a object on noisy image.

  • This paper provides a method for video augmentation using image interpolation. In computer graphics or augmented reality, 3D information of a model object is necessary to generate 2D views of the model, which are then inserted into or overlayed on environmental views or real video frames. However, we do not require any three dimensional model but images of the model object at some locations to render views according to the motion of video camera which is calculated by an SFM algorithm using point matches under weak-perspective (scaled-orthographic) projection model. Thus, a linear view interpolation algorithm is applied rather than a 3D ray-tracing method to get a view of the model at different viewpoints from model views. In order to get novel views in a way that agrees with the camera motion the camera coordinate system is embedded into model coordinate system at initialization time on the basis of 3D information recovered from video images and model views, respectively. During the sequence, motion parameters from video frames are used to compute interpolation parameters, and rendered model views are overlayed on corresponding video frames. Experimental results for real video frames and model views are given. Finally, discussion on the limitations of the method and subjects for future research are provided.

Moving Object Tracking Using Active Contour Model (동적 윤곽 모델을 이용한 이동 물체 추적)

  • In this paper, the visual tracking system for arbitrary shaped moving object is proposed. The established tracking system can be divided into model based method that needs previous model for target object and image based method that uses image feature. In the model based method, the reliable tracking is possible, but simplification of the shape is necessary and the application is restricted to definite target mod el. On the other hand, in the image based method, the process speed can be increased, but the shape information is lost and the tracking system is sensitive to image noise. The proposed tracking system is composed of the extraction process that recognizes the existence of moving object and tracking process that extracts dynamic characteristics and shape information of the target objects. Specially, active contour model is used to effectively track the object that is undergoing shape change. In initializatio n process of the contour model, the semi-automatic operation can be avoided and the convergence speed of the contour can be increased by the proposed effective initialization method. Also, for the efficient solution of the correspondence problem in multiple objects tracking, the variation function that uses the variation of position structure in image frame and snake energy level is proposed. In order to verify the validity and effectiveness of the proposed tracking system, real time tracking experiment for multiple moving objects is implemented.
