Present paper focuses on the modeling of size effect on the compressive strength of normal concrete with the application of Discrete Element Method (DEM). Test specimens with different size and shape were cast and uniaxial compressive strength test was performed on each sample. Five different concrete mixes were used, all belonging to a different normal strength concrete class (C20/25, C30/37, C35/45, C45/55, and C50/60). The numerical simulations were carried out by using the PFC 5 software, which applies rigid spheres and contacts between them to model the material. DEM modeling of size effect could be advantageous because the development of micro-cracks in the material can be observed and the failure mode can be visualized. The series of experiments were repeated with the model after calibration. The relationship of the parallel bond strength of the contacts and the laboratory compressive strength test was analyzed by aiming to determine a relation between the compressive strength and the bond strength of different sized models. An equation was derived based on Bazant's size effect law to estimate the parallel bond strength of differently sized specimens. The parameters of the equation were optimized based on measurement data using nonlinear least-squares method with SSE (sum of squared errors) objective function. The laboratory test results showed a good agreement with the literature data (compressive strength is decreasing with the increase of the size of the specimen regardless of the shape). The derived estimation models showed strong correlation with the measurement data. The results indicated that the size effect is stronger on concretes with lower strength class due to the higher level of inhomogeneity of the material. It was observed that size effect is more significant on cube specimens than on cylinder samples, which can be caused by the side ratios of the specimens and the size of the purely compressed zone. A limit value for the minimum size of DE model for cubes and cylinder was determined, above which the size effect on compressive strength can be neglected within the investigated size range. The relationship of model size (particle number) and computational time was analyzed and a method to decrease the computational time (number of iterations) of material genesis is proposed.

The machining accuracy and performance is largely influenced by the static, dynamic and thermal characteristics of spindle systems in machine tools, because the spindle system is a intermedium for cutting force from tool and machine powef from motor. Large cutting force and power are transmitted by bearing with a point or line contact. So, the spindle system is the static and dynamic weakest point in machine structure. For improvement of static stiffness of spindle system can be changed design parameters, such as diameter of spindle, stiffness of bearing and bearing span. But for dynamic stiffness, the change of the design parameters are not useful. In this paper, the combined bearing arrangement is suggested for high damping spindle system. The combined bearing arrangement is composed of tandem double back to back arrangement type ball bearins and a high damping hydrostatic bearing. The variation of static deflection and amplitude in first natural frequency is evaluated with the location of hydrostatic bearing between front and rear ball bearing. The optimized location of hydrostatic bearing for high static and dynamic stiffness is determined rapidly and exactly using the mode shape and transfer function of spindle. The calculation of damping effect on vibration by unbalance of grinding wheel and pulley in optimized spindle system is carried out to verify the validity of the combined bearing arrangement. Finally, the simulation of grinding process show that the surface roughness of workpiece with high damping spindle system is 60% better than with ball bearing spindle system.

The receptance method was applied for the analysis of a cylindrical shell with a curvaturated plate attached at the top of the shell. The boundary conditions of the shell considered here were clamped at the bottom and free at the top of the shell. Before the analysis of the shell/plate combined structure, the natural frequencies of the plate and the shell were calculated separately and then they were used in the calculation of the frequencies of the combined structure by the receptance method. The frequency equation of the combined structure was derived from the continuity condition at the junction of the shell and the plate. The frequencies for various curvature factors of the plate were presented and compared with those from ANSYS to show its validity of the present method.
The web-encased steel-concrete composite (WESCC) beam is a new developed steel-concrete composite beam. Experiments of six simply supported WESCC beam specimens were conducted. The effects of the shear-span ratio and steel section type were all investigated on the static behaviors such as failure modes, failure mechanism and bearing capacity. The experimental results denoted that all specimens failed in bending mode and the degree of combination between the bottom armor plate of steel shape and concrete were very well without any evident slippage, which demonstrated that the function of bottom armor plate and web were fully exerted in the WESCC beams. It could be concluded the WESCC beams have high stiffness, high load carrying capacity and advanced ductility. The design methods are proposed which mainly consist the bearing capacity calculation of bending and flexural rigidity. The calculation results of the bearing capacity and deflection which take the shear deflection into account are in agreement with the experimental results. The design methods are useful for design and application of the innovative composite beams.

In this study (Part I), an advanced empirical formulation was proposed to predict the ultimate strength of initially deflected steel plate subjected to longitudinal compression. An advanced empirical formulation was proposed by adopting Initial Deflection Index (IDI) concept for plate element which is a function of plate slenderness ratio (${\beta}$) and coefficient of initial deflection. In case of initial deflection, buckling mode shape, which is mostly assumed type in the ships and offshore industry, was adopted. For the numerical simulation by ANSYS nonlinear finite element method (NLFEM), with a total of seven hundred 700 plate scenarios, including the combination of one hundred (100) cases of plate slenderness ratios with seven (7) representative initial deflection coefficients, were selected based on obtained probability density distributions of plate element from collected commercial ships. The obtained empirical formulation showed good agreement ($R^2=0.99$) with numerical simulation results. The obtained outcome with proposed procedure will be very useful in predicting the ultimate strength performance of plate element subjected to longitudinal compression.

In this paper, an investigation of factors affecting piezoelectric transformers is presented by ATILA software. These transformers are multi-layer piezoelectric transformers in square shape $28\;{\times}\;28\;mm$ and operate in first vibration mode for step-down function. The piezoelectric transformers were modeled in 3D-dimension and analyzed using finite element method in ATILA software, a popular software in piezoelectric analysis. Modal and harmonic modules were used in this process. Effective factors to the properties of piezoelectric transformers including different input electrode patterns, directions of polarization, sizes of connective comer, number of layers were examined on the simulated model using input voltage of 20 V and load resistance of $100\;{\Omega}$. Moreover, thermal analysis was also obtained with conditions of input voltage of 5 V and no-load.

In this paper, damage detection has been introduced as an optimization problem and a two-step method has been proposed that can detect the location and severity of damage in truss structures precisely and reduce the volume of computations considerably. In the first step, using the residual force vector concept, the suspected damaged members are detected which will result in a reduction in the number of variables and hence a decrease in the search space dimensions. In the second step, the precise location and severity of damage in the members are identified using the genetic algorithm and the results of the first step. Considering the reduced search space, the algorithm can find the optimal points (i.e. the solution for the damage detection problem) with less computation cost. In this step, the Efficient Correlation Based Index (ECBI), that considers the structure's first few frequencies in both damaged and healthy states, is used as the objective function and some examples have been provided to check the efficiency of the proposed method; results have shown that the method is innovatively capable of detecting damage in truss structures.
This study is focused on the constitutive model in order to represent brittleness and dilatancy of cohesionless soils. The constitutive model was proposed on the basis of an anisotropic hardening rule with generalized isotropic hardening rule. The shape of yield surface is a simple cylinder type in stress space and it makes the model practically useful. Flow rule was approximated by a concrete function on dilatancy. A peak stress ratio was defined to model brittle stress-strain relationships. The proposed model was formulated and implemented to calculate the stress-strain relationship from triaxial tests. In the companion paper the proposed model will be verified by comparison with the triaxial test results.
In this study, vortex induced vibrations of a cylinder mounted on a flexible rod are analyzed. This simple configuration represents the key element of new conception bladeless wind turbine (Whitlock 2015). In this study the structure oscillations equation coupled to the wake oscillation equation for this configuration are solved using analytical perturbation method, for the first time. An analytical expression that predicts the lock-in phenomena range of wind speed is derived. The discretized equations of motion are also solved using RKF45 numerical method. The equations of motion are discretized by Galerkin method. Free vibration mode shape of the structure taking into account the discontinuity of the cross section are used as comparison function. Numerical results are compared to the analytical results, and they show a satisfying agreement. The effect of system parameters on the oscillations of structure and wake as well as on the lock-in domain are presented. Moreover, it is shown that the values of wind speed triggering the start and the stop of the lock-in phenomenon, for increasing wind speed are different from those values obtained during the reverse process, i.e., when the wind speed decreases.

The diesel engine is often a serious excitation source in ships. Both the varying cylinder gas forces and the reciprocating and rotating mass forces associated with the crank and the connecting rod mechanism produce ample possibilities for excitation of the engine structure itself, the shafting, the surrounding substructures as well as the hull girder. This paper presents a guide for optimization of excitation forces produced by the marine propulsion 2-stroke diesel engine. The computational program for predicting the excitation forces is developed and applied to 2-stroke in-line engines. The object function is defined as the work done by every cylinder excitation force which is related to the mode shape of the diesel engine system, especially in the torsional vibration of the shafting. As a practical application of the presented method, the crank angle of 7 cylinder 2-stroke engine is optimized to reduce torsional vibration stresses on the shafting. Compared with the regular firing angle, about 60% of the 4th order torsional vibratory stress on the propeller shaft can be reduced by optimizing the crank angle irregularly. The usefulness of the presented optimization method is confirmed by the measurements.
