This paper presents the structural characteristics of slab-column connections by using nonlinear finite element analysis. FEA considering material non-linearity was performed to investigate average column strain, failure mode, principal stress distribution, and steel yielding conditions for various slab-column members. In addition, to investigate alternative methods for improving the strength of interior column-slab joints, some specimens were provided with different reinforcing types of high-strength concrete puddling, high-strength column longitudinal steels, dowel bars, and high-strength concrete core. To make certain of the reliability of the analytical program, analysis results for concrete material model developed and two specimens with and without puddling were compared with experimental results. It was found that providing the alternative reinforcing methods in the slab-column joint results in a significant improvement in performance. This includes an increase in the axial compressive strength, greater loading stiffness, and ductility.
FE models for complex or large-scaled structures that need detailed modeling of structural components are usually constructed using commercial analysis softwares. Updating of such FE model by conventional sensitivity-based methods is difficult since repeated computation for perturbed parameters and manual calculations are needed to obtain sensitivity matrix in each iteration. In this study, an FE model updating procedure avoiding such difficulties by using response surface (RS) method and a Pareto-based multiobjective optimization (MOO) was formulated and applied to FE models constructed with a commercial analysis package. The test building is a low-rise reinforced concrete building that has been seismically retrofitted. Dynamic properties of the building were extracted from vibration tests performed before and after the seismic retrofits, respectively. The elastic modulus of concrete and masonry, and spring constants for the expansion joint were updated. Two RS functions representing the errors in the natural frequencies and mode shape, respectively, were obtained and used as the objective functions for MOO. Among the Pareto solutions, the best compromise solution was determined using the TOPSIS (Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution) procedure. A similar task was performed for retrofitted building by taking the updating parameters as the stiffness of modified or added members. Obtained parameters of the existing building were reasonably comparable with the current code provisions. However, the stiffness of added concrete shear walls and steel section jacketed members were considerably lower than expectation. Such low values are seemingly because the bond between new and existing concrete was not as good as the monolithically casted members, even though they were connected by the anchoring bars.
Concrete cracking due to brittle tension strength significantly prevents fully utilization of the materials for "flexural-shear failure" type shear walls. Theoretical and experimental studies applying fiber reinforced concrete (FRC) have achieved fruitful results in improving the seismic performance of "flexural-shear failure" reinforced concrete shear walls. To come to an understanding of an optimal design strategy and find common performance prediction method for design methodology in terms to FRC shear walls, seismic performance on shear walls with PVA and steel FRC at edge columns and plastic region are compared in this study. The seismic behavior including damage mode, lateral bearing capacity, deformation capacity, and energy dissipation capacity are analyzed on different fiber reinforcing strategies. The experimental comparison realized that the lateral strength and deformation capacity are significantly improved for the shear walls with PVA and steel FRC in the plastic region and PVA FRC in the edge columns; PVA FRC improves both in tensile crack prevention and shear tolerance while steel FRC shows enhancement mainly in shear resistance. Moreover, the tensile strength of the FRC are suggested to be considered, and the steel bars in the tension edge reaches the ultimate strength for the confinement of the FRC in the yield and maximum lateral bearing capacity prediction comparing with the model specified in provisions.
PSRC column is a concrete encased steel angle column. In the PSRC column, the steel angles placed at the corner of the cross-section resists bending moment and compression load. The lateral re-bars welded to steel angles resist the column shear and the bond between the steel angle and concrete. In the present study, current design procedures in KBC 2009 were applied to the flexure-compression, shear, and bond design of the PSRC composite column. To verify the validity of the design method and failure mode, simply supported 2/3 scaled PSRC and correlated SRC beams were tested under two point loading. The test parameters were the steel angle ratio and lateral bar spacing. The test results showed that the bending, shear, and bond strengths predicted by KBC 2009 correlated well with the test results. The flexural strength of the PSRC specimens was much greater than that of the SRC specimen with the same steel ratio because the steel angles were placed at the corner of the column section. However, when the bond resistance between the steel angle and concrete was not sufficient, brittle failures such as bond failure of the angle, spalling of cover concrete, and the tensile fracture of lateral re-bar occurred before the development of the yield strength of PSRC composite section. Further, if the weldability and toughness of the steel angle were insufficient, the specimen was failed by the fracture of the steel angle at the weld joint between the angle and lateral bars.

The use of glass-fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) bars in reinforced concrete (RC) structures has emerged as an alternative to traditional RC due to the corrosion of steel in aggressive environments. Although the number of analytical and experimental studies on RC beams with GFRP reinforcement has increased in recent decades, it is still lower than the number of such studies related to steel RC structures. This paper presents the experimental moment deflection relations of GFRP reinforced beam which are spliced. Test variables were different reinforcement ratio and cover thickness of GFRP rebars. Seven concrete beams reinforced with steel GFRP re-Bars were tested. All the specimens had a span of 4000mm, provided with 12.7mm nominal diameter steel and GFRP rebars. All test specimens were tested under 2-point loads so that the spliced region be subject to constant moment. The experimental results show that the ultimate moment capacity of beam increasing of the reinforcement ratio. Failure mode of these specimens was sensitively vary according to the reinforcement ratio. The change of beam effective depth, which was caused by cover thickness variation, controlled the maximum strength and deflection because of cover spalling in tension face.
This paper outlines a new strengthening technique for concrete beams using externally unbended high-strength bars. The advantages of proposed method lie in speed and simplicity of construction compared to the alternative strengthening method. Externally unbended reinforcement retains many of the advantages over external unbended prestressed tendons. It eliminates time consuming stressing operations. Clearance requirements around anchorages are reduced as access is not required for prestressing jacks. Test results of eight specimens on reinforced concrete beams using different reinforcement materials such as carbon fiber sheet, steel plate and high-tension bar are reported. The beam strengthened by carbon fiber sheet showed a brittle failure mode due to the separation of fiber. As a result of draped profile of external bar, the maximum strength of the beam were increased by up to 212 percent and the deflections were reduced by up to 65 percent. Test results show that the beams reinforced with high-tension bar are superior to reference specimens, especially for the strength and deformation capacity.
Due to the high compressive and tensile strength of ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC), UHPC used in steel concrete composite structures provided thinner concrete layer compared to ordinary concrete. This leaded to the headed stud shear connectors embedded in UHPC had a low aspect ratio. In order to systematic investigate the effect of headed stud with low aspect ratio on the structural behaviors of steel UHPC composite structure s this paper firstly carried out a test program consisted of twelve push out specimens. The effects of stud height, aspect ratio and reinforcement bars in UHPC on the structural behaviors of headed studs were investigated. The push out test results shows that the increasing of stud height did not obviously influence the structural behaviors of headed studs and the aspect ratio of 2.16 was proved enough to take full advantage of the headed stud strength. Based on the test results, the equation considering the contribution of weld collar was modified to predict the shear strength of headed stud embedded in UHPC. The modified equation could accurately predict the shear strength of headed stud by comparing with the experimental results. On the basis of push out test results, bending tests consisted of three steel UHPC composite slabs were conducted to investigate the effect of shear connection degree on the structural behaviors of composite slabs. The bending test results revealed that the shear connection degree had a significantly influence on the failure modes and ultimate resistance of composite slabs and composite slab with connection degree of 96% in s hear span exhibited a ductile failure accompanied by the tensile yield of steel plate and crushing of UHPC. Finally, analytical model based on the failure mode of composite slabs was proposed to predict the ultimate resistance of steel UHPC composite slabs with different shear connection degrees at the interface.
The attack of environmental aggressive agents progressively reduces the structural reliability of buildings and infrastructures and, in the worst exposition conditions, may even lead to their collapse in the long period. A change in the material and sectional characteristics of a structural element, due to the environmental damaging effects, changes its mechanical behaviour and varies both the internal stress redistribution and the kinematics through which it reaches its ultimate state. To identify such a behaviour, the evolution of both the damaging process and its mechanical consequences have to be taken into account. This paper presents a computational approach for the analysis of reinforced and prestressed concrete elements under sustained loading conditions and subjected to given damaging scenarios. The effects of the diffusion of aggressive agents, of the onset and development of the corrosion state in the reinforcement and the corresponding mechanical response are studied. As known, the corrosion on the reinforcing bars influences the damaging rate in the cracking pattern evolution; hence, the damage development and the mechanical behaviours are considered as coupled phenomena. The reliability of such an approach is validated in modelling the diffusion of the aggressive agents and the changes in the mechanical response of simple structural elements whose experimental behaviour is reported in Literature. A second set of analyses studies the effects of the corrosion of the tendons of a P.C. beam and explores potentially unexpected structural responses caused by corrosion under different aggressive exposition. The role of the different types and of the different positions of the damaging agents is discussed. In particular, it is shown how the collapse mode of the beam may switch from flexural to shear type, in case corrosion is caused by a localized chloride attack in the shear span.
To reuse a broken plain concrete (PC) arch, a retrofitting method was proposed to ensure excellent structural performances, in which carbon fiber reinforced polymers (CFRPs) were applied to repair and strengthen the damaged PC arch through bonding and wrapping techniques. Experiments were carried out to reveal the deformation and the load carrying capacity of the retrofitted composite arch. Based on the experiments, repairing and strengthening effects of the CFRP retrofitted broken arch were revealed. Simplified analysing model was suggested to predict the peak load of the CFRP retrofitted broken arch. According to the research, it is confirmed that absolutely broken PC arch can be completely repaired and reinforced, and even behaves more excellent than the intact PC arch when bonded together and strengthened with CFRP sheets. Using CFRP bonding/wrapping technique a novel efficient composite PC arch structure can be constructed, the comparison between rebar reinforced concrete (RC) arch and composite PC arch reveals that CFRP reinforcements can replace the function of steel bars in concrete arch.

The use of fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) composites is significantly growing in construction and infrastructure applications where durability under harsh environmental conditions is of great concern. In order to examine the applicability of FRP rebar as a reinforcement in flexural member, flexural tests were conducted. 12 beams with different FRP materials such as CFRP, GFRP and Hybrid FRP and reinforcement ratio were tested and analyzed in terms of failure mode, moment-deflection, flexural capacity, ductility index and sectional strain distribution. The test results were also compared with the theoretical model represented in ACI 440.1R06. Test results indicate that the flexural capacity of the beams reinforced by FRP bars can be accurately predicted using the ultimate design theory. They also show that the current ACI model for computing the deflection overestimates the actual deflection of GFRP series and underestimates the deflection of CFRP series.
