  • For the demand analysis of Metropolitan Train Express project, the catchment area of station should be reevaluated considering the journey speed of it. In this paper, we estimated travel mode choice model using stated preference data including Seoul metropolitan express train and compared the parameters of access/egress travel time between existing metro and Seoul metropolitan express train. The parameter of Seoul metropolitan express train is 2.5 times smaller than that of existing metro. Consequently, the catchment area can be expanded in same proportion. It can be concluded that the result of demand forecasting can be increased by 10% accommodating the expanded catchment area.

  • Using the computer programs for calculation of natural vibrations of ship's hull developed by the authors et al., an investigation into influences of various parameters on the accuracy of calculation was done through example calculations of a 30,000 DWT petroleum products carrier M/S Sweet Brier built by Korea Shipbuilding and Engineering Corporation. The methodical principles employed for the computer program development are as follows; (a) the ship system is reduced to an equivalent discrete elements system conforming to Myklestad-Prohl model, (b) the problem formulation is of transfer matrix method, and (c) to obtain solutions an extended $G\ddot{u}mbel's$ initial value method is introduced. The scope of the investigation is influences of number of discrete elements, choice of significant system parameters such as rotary inertia, bending stiffness and shear stiffness, and simplification of distributions of added mass and stiffness as trapezoidal ones referred to those of midship section on the calculation accuracy. From the investigation the followings are found out; (1) To obtain good results for the modes up to the seven-noded thirty or more divisions of the hull is desirable. For fundamental mode fifteen divisions may give fairly good results. (2) The influence of rotary inertia is negligibly small at least for the modes up to the 5- or 6- noded. (3) In the case of assuming either bending modes or shear modes the calculation results in considerably higher frequencies as compared with those based on Timoshenko beam theory. However, the calculation base on the slender beam theory surprisingly gives frequencies within 10% error for fundamental modes. (4) It is proved that to simplify distributions of added mass and stiffness as trapezoidal ones referred to those of midship section is a promising approach for the prediction of natural frequencies at preliminary design stage; provided good accumulation of data from similar type ships, we may expect to obtain natural frequencies within 5% error.

  • The purpose of this study is to contribute the use of special taxi for the transportation vulnerable such as elderly and pregnant woman in terms of improving transportation mobility and extending social participation. We analyzed the DB users of STS system operating in Suwon, and surveyed the preference statement. Specifically, we have built transportation mode choice models for the elderly and pregnant woman, and then we drew the activating STS plan by comparing influence factors for each model. Based on the results of the study, 23% of STS user was the elderly people and pregnant women, 31% of user was for hospital passage purpose, and short-haul passage within 2 ~ 5km was 70% level of the passage. According to preference survey results between STS and Bus, fare was the highest impact factor in the mode choices for the elderly, and the participants who are older and car owners have been found to prefer the special taxi. For the pregnant woman, travel time and fare were the main influence factors of choices, and it was discovered that they preferred the special taxi when they are car owners and trips was frequented. Also, if the fare of special taxi is about 70% of the regular taxi fare, The share rates of Special Taxi comparing to bus for the elderly and pregnant woman are analyzed to be 51.1% and 63.6% each. Therefore, the adjustment of the fare would be effective to encourage the use of the special taxi. The results of this study can be used as a basis for establishing the rational fare structure of the special taxi.

  • Most of Korea's 15 local airports, with the exception Jeju, Gimpo and Gimhae airports, have been several billion Won in the red each year. It has been reported that one of the causes of the poor financial performance is inaccurate air traffic demand predictions. Under the situation, the entry of low-cost carrier air service using turbo-prop airplanes into the domestic airlines market gets a wide range of support, which is expected to promote the convenience of consumers and help to activate local airports. In this study, the authors (1) suggest a high-speed transport demand model among existing airlines, Korea Train Express (KTX) and low-cost carrier air service; (2) try to make low-cost air carrier demand predictions for a route between Seoul and Daegu through a stated-preference survey; and (3), examine possible effectiveness of selected policy measures by establishing an estimation model. First, fare has a strong influence for mode choice between high-speed transport modes when considering the entry of low-cost carrier air service between Seoul and Daegu. Even low-cost carrier air service fare is set at 38,000 won, which is considerably low compared with that of KTX, in the regions where the total travel time is the same for both low-cost carrier air service and KTX, the probability of selecting low-cost carrier air service is 0.1, which shows little possibility of modal change between high speed transportation means. It is suggested that the fare of low-cost air service between Seoul and Daegu should be within the range of from of 38,000 to 44,000 Won; if it is higher, the demand is likely to be lower than expected.

  • In this study our main focus is to verify the relationship between social value of transportation system and its perceived features. To achieve this objective, we investigated the value of public bike system (PBS) through willingness to pay (WTP) analysis using contingent valuation method (CVM) and the survey was conducted for 1726 respondents who live in Suwon, Korea. Moreover the determinants related to features related to bicycle use were also gathered. The estimated binary logistic regression and censored regression reveal that the value of PBS is influenced by perceived features towards bicycle use incorporating non-congestion, transportation mode like auto and bus, and high mobility system as well as other variables such as income, bicycle ownership etc. Furthermore the results show that the perceiving of positive features to bicycle use leads to higher social value of PBS. Based on the findings, we discuss the importance of pre-review for transport policy implementation, and also explore the possibilities for application to PBS.

  • The existing selected station analysis (SSA) method analyzes the link transfer mode data between origin and destination of individuals passing through stations from a microscopic standpoint. As such, existing SSA is insufficient as it uses integrated analysis using macroscopic data such as subway lines. This research builds a line chain OD based on path search of individual passenger's movement through the subway, and explores means to utilize the findings. First, a method is proposed that searches the traversed subway path from the linked passage modes that the passenger uses and applies the results to SSA line analysis. Compared to the existing SSA, this method provides for analysis of commonly conflicting features such as the line on which the station is passed, and the stations included on the line thanks to the presence of complete information of the individual passenger's traversed path. It also allows for integrated observation of the line chain OD that approaches a certain station. For enhanced understanding, Seoul Metro Line 9 is used as a case study to demonstrate the integrated formulation concept of line chain OD centered around a certain station as well as the macroscopic features of the traversed path that approaches stations included on the line.

  • Influenza virus is the major cause of seasonal and pandemic flu. Currently, oseltamivir, a potent and selective inhibitor of neuraminidase of influenza A and B viruses, is the drug of choice for treating patients with influenza virus infection. However, recent emergence of oseltamivir-resistant influenza viruses has limited its efficacy. Morin hydrate (3,5,7,2',4'-pentahydroxyflavone) is a flavonoid isolated from Morus alba L. It has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective, and anticancer effects partly by the inhibition of the NF-κB signaling pathway. However, its effects on influenza virus have not been studied. We evaluated the antiviral activity of morin hydrate against influenza A/Puerto Rico/8/1934 (A/PR/8; H1N1) and oseltamivir-resistant A/PR/8 influenza viruses in vitro. To determine its mode of action, we carried out time course experiments, and time of addition, hemolysis inhibition, and hemagglutination assays. The effects of the co-administration of morin hydrate and oseltamivir were assessed using the murine model of A/PR/8 infection. We found that morin hydrate reduced hemagglutination by A/PR/8 in vitro. It alleviated the symptoms of A/PR/8-infection, and reduced the levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines and chemokines, such as TNF-α and CCL2, in infected mice. Co-administration of morin hydrate and oseltamivir phosphate reduced the virus titers and attenuated pulmonary inflammation. Our results suggest that morin hydrate exhibits antiviral activity by inhibiting the entry of the virus.
