  • To estimate soil behavior and structural characteristics under the conditions of cyclic loading, freezing & thawing and initial state, several testing was performed and obtained following results. 1.After repeated freezing and thawing processes, original soil structure was destroyed and changed to globular structure from honeycomb or tube in its structure types. Also above processes resulted increasing the soil compression strain while decreasing the failure stress in stress-strain relationship and reached the soil structure into the mode of brittle fracture. Under cyclic loading conditions, soil cluster which was originally dispersed structure colloided with each other, seperated, and finally the soil failed due to the effect of overcompaction. 2.Through the stabilization processes seperated by four steps, the structure of soil skeleton was changed to quite different globular type. The degree of compressibility of soil was decreased in the normally consolidated zone, while the strength against external load increased due to soil particle stabilization. 3.Soil stress-strain chracteristics were largely influenced by repeated up and down processes of temperature. The maximum deformation was obtained in the case of temperature between 0 10˚C by the reseon of particle cluster reformation. 4.Soil compressibility was largely influenced by the optimum moisture content. Under freezing process, swelling could be found and its magnitude was proportional to the density of soil. 5.Density of soil was decreased as increasing the number or repeated freezing and thawing processes and the largest decreasing rate was found at the first turning point from freezing to thawing cycle.

  • There have been conducted a lot of works on shear behavior of steel fiber reinforced concrete beams. Fiber reinforced concrete beams without shear reinforcement were tested to determine their cracking shear strengths and ultimate shear capacities. Results of tests on 14 reinforced concrete beams (including 11 containing steel fibers) are reported. Two parameters were varied in the study, namely, the volume fraction of fibers and shear span-to-depth ratio. The effects of fiber incorporation on failure modes, deflections, cracking shear strength, and ul~imate shear strength have been examined. Resistance to shear stresses have been found to be improved by the inclusion of fibers, The mode of failure changed from shear to flexure when the shear span-to-depth ratio exceeds 3.4. Based on these investigations, a method of computing the shear strength of steel fiber reinforced concrete beam is suggested. The comparisons between computed values and expenmentally observed values are shown to verify the proposed theoretical treatment and steel fibers efficiency.

  • Recently the construction of residential buildings faces many difficulties due to the shortage of building materials and works. Simplifying the stage of processing and assembling reinforcing rods and increasing the efficiency of them in reinforced concrete construction can be used to settle the difficulties. In the respect, structural wire-fabric and loop wire-fabric is utilized. The purpose of this study, on condition of being $210kg/cm^2$ concrete strength, is to analyze the structural and flexural properties of one-way concrete slabs by testing with different reinforcing type, tensile steel ratio based with minimum steel ratio, boundary condition and splice length which affect the maximum width of crack and ductility factor. From the test results, the ductility factor is approved that the slabs using deformed bar were much better than that using wire-fabric, and 30D of splice length was appropriate in the slabs as splice length. In the control of the maximum crack width the slabs using wire-fabric and loop wire-fabric were much better than that using deformed bar.

  • One of the most important design concept for reinforced concrete structures is to achieve a ductile failure mode, and also moment redistribution for economic design is possible in case that adequate ductility is provided. Flexural ductility index is, therefore, used as a reference for possibility of moment redistribution as well as for prediction of flexural behavior of designed R.C. structures. Ductility index equations, however, provide approximate values due to the linear concrete compressive stress assumption at the tension steel yielding state. Theoretically more exact ductility index is calculated by a numerical analysis with the realistic stress-strain curves for concrete and steel to be compared with the result from tire ductility index equations. Variation of ductility index for the selected variables and the reasonable maximum tension steel ratio for doubly reinforced section are investigated. A moment-curvature curve model is also proposed for future research on moment redistribution.

  • The dynamic behavior of a small wind-turbine blade was analyzed experimentally. Arrays of fiber Bragg-Grating (FBG) sensors attached along the blade were used to measure the strains of the blade surface. An impact test was performed to estimate the resonance frequencies of the fundamental and higher modes of the cantilever blade system developed for this study. The results were similar to the results for conventional strain gages. However, FBG sensors could sense modes that strain gauges could not sense. The strains obtained from the FBG sensor array were used to estimate displacement-mode shapes of the blade.

  • This paper presents the experimental results for the interfacial bond behaviour between AFRP strip and steel members. The objective of this paper is to examine the interfacial behavior and to evaluate the interfacial bond stress between Aramid FRP strips and steel plates. The test variables were bond length and AFRP thickness. 18 specimens were fabricated and one-face shear type bond tests were conducted in this study. There were two types of failure mode which were debonding and delamination between AFRP strip and steel plates. From the test, the load was increased with the increasing of bond length and AFRP thickness, which was observed that maximum increase of 63 and 86% were also achieved in load with the increasing of bond length and AFRP thickness, respectively. Finally, bond and slip characteristics had the elastic bond-slip model and it was observed that bond strength and fracture energy were not affected by bond length and AFRP thickness.

  • The steel members are applied to high rise building since they have high strength compare to the concrete member. On the other hand, the elastic buckling is likely to occur in steel member because of their small section. When the elastic buckling occur, the steel structure lose a load carrying capacity. The steel frame would be unstable due to a rapid decline in strength by buckling. The purpose of this study is the development of FLD(Force Limiting Device) to prevent a elastic buckling for a slender member. Further, the behavior of steel structures with FLD would be stable by high energy absorption capacity. The proposed type of FLD is the type of out-of-plane resistance. In this study, member test and FEM analysis for proposed type were performed. The test parameters are thickness and gradient angle of out-of-plane plate. The proposed type may be effective method for FLD.

  • In this paper a systematic numerical analysis is performed to obtain the hysteresis behavior of partially restrained top and seat angle connections subjected to cyclic loading. This connection includes superelastic shape memory alloy (SMA) angles and rods in order to secure the recentering capacities as well as proper energy dissipation effects of a CFT composite frame. The three-dimensional nonlinear finite element models are constructed to investigate the rotational stiffness, bending moment capacity and failure modes. A wide scope of additional structural behaviors explain the different influences of the connection's parameters, such as the various thickness of connection angles and the gage distance of steel and SMA rods.

  • In order to characterize the adhesive properties and failure mechanisms of diamond-like carbon (DLC) films of two different thicknesses (130 nm and $1.2{\mu}m$), deposited by plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition on a Si substrate, scratch testing with a micro-indenter ($12.5{\mu}m$ tip radius) was performed under a linearly increasing load. These scratch tests were conducted under the same test conditions for both films. The critical load of each film was estimated from the scratch test results, based on a sharp increase in the coefficient of friction and a clear distinction of failure modes. The critical load was the basis for evaluating the adhesion strength of the films, and the $1.2{\mu}m-thick$ DLC film had superior adhesion strength. For better understanding of the failure modes, the following analyses were conducted: friction behavior and scratch tracks analysis using scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive spectroscopy, and 3-D profilometry. The scratch test results showed that failure modes were related to the thickness of the films. The 130 nm-thick DLC film underwent cohesive failure modes (cracks and chipping) before reaching to a gross failure stage. On the other hand, the thicker DLC film ($1.2{\mu}m-thick$) did not exhibit micro cracks before a sudden gross failure of the film together with the evidence of cracking and chipping of the Si substrate.

  • The fish behavior survey in the main-net of a large scale-net was carried out in relation to the catching function of the set-net. at Kishihata set-net in Japan during the period from January 29th to February 22th 1992. The results obtained are summarized as follows; 1. The greatest number of schools observation in the main-net occurred between 17 : 00hrs and 18 : 00hrs. after which the schools suddenly disappeared. This result show that the schools did not stay in the main-net. but immediately moved through into the bag-net or left the main-net. 2. The course of movement of the small schools of sardine in the main-net was in a straight line to the slope-net. However. upon arrived at the slope-net the school turned around. away from the slope-net and went directly towards the playground. 3. The majority of small schools of sardine in the main-net were estimated to move with the mode velocity 25cm/sec. however the maximum velocity were recorded 80cm/sec.
