Modal testing and analysis is a primary tool for obtaining reliable models to represent the dynamics of structures. When a structure is tested in order to collect measured data in modal testing, we usually use attached accelerometers to pick up the response data. Change in modal parameters due to the mass of transducers in modal testing is a well-known problem. The disadvantages are the shift of measured modal frequencies and the change of modal shapes, which can cause inaccurate results in further analysis. Modal analysis methods in frequency domain are based on a set of measured frequency response functions(FRF).(omitted)
The purpose of this paper is to verify a finite element model of an automotive exhaust system using Modal testing. In general, a lot of finite element models are used in initial design step of automotive development. One of them is a finite element model of an exhaust system. Verification on the finite element model of an automotive exhaust system is indispensable. In this paper, a finite element analysis on the exhaust system using MSC/NASTRAN is carried out, and the results are compared with those obtained by modal testing. By comparing MAC values of the analytical modes with the experimental modes, the finite element model of the automotive exhaust system is verified.
In this work, we propose to employ magnetostrictive sensors to develop a new non-contacting modal testing method. Specific applications are made in the modal testing of a beam in bending. The role of bias magnetic fields in measuring bending waves is addressed and an approximate analysis to explain the principle to measure bending signals is carried out. The measured modal data by the present method agree well with those by conventional methods using accelerometers.
A strain modal testing method has been applied to a cantilever beam to investigate the characteristics of the method. By applying the method to an analytical and an experimental system, it was shown that accurate modal parameters can be estimated from strain frequency response functions using a current modal parameter extraction algorithm. The modal parameters estimated by the method are more accurate than those by the conventional method which uses accelerometers when the tested system is of light weight. The method can be used to predict strain responses and excitation forces for given excitation forces and responses, respectively. Cracks on a structure can be detected by measuring strian FRFs and comparing them with the original ones.
A precise fit of the implant prosthesis is one of the most important factors in preventing mechanical complications. To analyze the degree of the misfit of implant prosthesis, a modal testing experiment was accomplished. And. to interpret the modal testing analysis mathematically, three-dimensional finite element models were established. In the experimental modal testing analysis, with a laser displacement meter, FFT analyzer, impact hammer, etc., natural frequencies of the models with various degree of prosthesis fit were determined after the frequency response function were calculated. In the finite element analysis, the natural frequencies and mode shapes of the models which simulated those of experimental modal testing were computed. The results were as follows: 1. Natural frequencies of the prosthesis-abutment were related to the contact state between components. 2. In the modal testing experiment, the natural frequencies increased from $50{\mu}m$ to $200{\mu}m$ gap and reached a plateau. 3. In the finite element analysis, the natural frequencies decreased gradually according to the in crease of the gap size. 4. In the finite element analysis, the mode shapes of model 1 with misfitting prosthesis showed different patterns from those without misfitting prosthesis. 5. The devices including a laser displacement meter used in this study were useful for measuring the natural frequencies of an implant prosthesis which had various degrees of fit.

Measurement technique using only one sensor for complex modal testing of the asymmetric rotor is proposed. The reverse directional frequency response function of asymmetric rotor, which is known to be indicative of the degree of asymmetry in a symmetric rotor, is also shown to be identified with simplest technique requiring only one sensor and one excitor. It lessens the testing efforts and its practicality is verified by numerical simulation. The measurement and excitation techniques for complex modal testing are also summarized so that the efficient complex modal testing can be possible according to the kind of rotor system.
Presented is a method to predict strain responses from displacement measurements on a mechanical structure. The method consists of forming a transformation matrix, which is calculated from displacement and strain modal matrices. The modal matrices can be obtained by either finite element analysis or modal testing. One disadvantage of the method is that it requires displacements on all measuring points be measured simultaneously. The strain prediction method is applied to a simple simulated system.
A strain modal testing method has been applied to a cantilever beam to investigate the characteristics of the method. By applying the method to an analytical and an experimental system, it was shown that accurate modal parameters can be estimated from the FRFs using a current modal parameter extraction algorithm. The modal parameters estimated by the method are more accurate than those by the conventional method which uses accelerometers when the tested system is of light weight. The strain response for a given excitation force and the force which causes the response can be predicted using the measured strain FRFS.
Interior noise in a car is known to have an important influence on product acceptability. This noise is closely correlated with structural-acoustic vibration. When considering noise problem, the structural-acoustic relation of a vehicle cabin model needs to be identified. However, it is very difficult to get the modal parameters of this kind of cabin structure composed of thin plates: because it not only can be excited by the acoustic vibration of cavity, but also tends to have decoupling effects of one plate from another. In order to obtain modal parameters more precisely, various excitation techniques, i.e. impact, pure random, burst random, and swept sine testing are applied for the first step. In the case of the cabin model, impact and swept sine testing show good results. Next, the determination of the excitation point by trial- and-error and the accurate measurements of FRF's are performed with these methods. The modal parameter extraction is carried out for the final step. This paper proposes a new approach to find the modal parameters more reliably in the case of high decoupling effects. That is, the convergence of MIF and MCF in each panel, which provide some criteria for the validity of the obtained modal parameters, is observed. And from those results, the pretty accurate modal parameters can be determined. A comparative assessment between the modal testing and the FEM is also performed.
The complex modal testing methods developed for asymmetric rotors are briefly discussed and their performances are experimentally evaluated. For the experiments, a laboratory test rotor is excited by using a newly developed, cost effective magnetic exciter equipped with Hall sensors, which measure the excitation forces. It is concluded that the exciter system is characterized by a wide bandwidth and a high resolution for both the excitation and force measurement, and that the one-exciter/two-sensor technique for complex modal testing of asymmetric rotors is superior to the standard two-exciter/two-sensor technique in terms of practicality and realization.
