  • Recently, a new output-only modal identification method based on time-frequency independent component analysis (ICA) has been developed by the authors and shown to be useful for even highly-damped structures. In many cases, it is of interest to identify the complex modes of structures with non-proportional damping. This study extends the time-frequency ICA based method to a complex ICA formulation for output-only modal identification of non-proportionally-damped structures. The connection is established between complex ICA model and the complex-valued modal expansion with sparse time-frequency representation, thereby blindly separating the measured structural responses into the complex mode matrix and complex-valued modal responses. Numerical simulation on a non-proportionally-damped system, laboratory experiment on a highly-damped three-story frame, and a real-world highly-damped base-isolated structure identification example demonstrate the capability of the time-frequency complex ICA method for identification of structures with complex modes in a straightforward and efficient manner.

  • The instrumented Canton Tower is a 610 m high-rise structure, which has been considered as a benchmark problem for structural health monitoring (SHM) research. In this paper, an improved automatic modal identification method is presented based on a natural excitation technique in conjunction with the eigensystem realization algorithm (NExT/ERA). In the proposed modal identification method, damping ratio, consistent mode indicator from observability matrices (CMI_O) and modal amplitude coherence (MAC) are used as criteria to distinguish the physically true modes from spurious modes. Enhanced frequency domain decomposition (EFDD), the data-driven stochastic subspace identification method (SSI-DATA) and the proposed method are respectively applied to extract the modal parameters of the Canton Tower under different environmental conditions. Results of modal parameter identification based on output-only measurements are presented and discussed. User-selected parameters used in those methods are suggested and discussed. Furthermore, the effect of environmental conditions on the dynamic characteristics of Canton tower is investigated.

  • This paper introduces an improved modal pushover analysis (IMPA) which can effectively evaluate the seismic response of multi-span continuous bridge structures on the basis of modal pushover analysis (MPA). Differently from previous modal pushover analyses which cause the numerical unstability because of the occurrence of reversed relation between the pushover load and displacement, the proposed method eliminates this numerical instability and, in advance the coupling effects induced from the direct application of modal decomposition by introducing an identical stiffness ratio for each dynamic mode at the post-yielding stage together with an approximate elastic deformation. In addition to these two introductions, the use of an effective seismic load, calculated from the modal spatial force and applied as the distributed load, makes it possible to predict the dynamic responses of all bridge structures through a simpler analysis procedure than those in conventional modal pushover analyses. Finally, in order to establish validity and applicability of the proposed method, correlation studies between a rigorous nonlinear time history analysis and the proposed method were conducted for multi-span continuous bridges.

  • In this paper, two possible ways for mode shape expansion are proposed and opened for discussion for future use. The first method minimizes the modal flexibility error between the experimental and analytical mode shapes corresponding to the measured DOFs to find the multiplication matrix which can be treated as the least-squares minimization problem. In the second method, Normalized Modal Difference (NMD) is used to calculate multiplication matrix using the analytical DOFs corresponding to measured DOfs. This matrix is then used to expand the measured mode shape to unmeasured DOFs. A simulated simply supported beam is used to demonstrate the performance of the methods. These methods are then compared with two most promising existing methods namely Kidder dynamic expansion and Modal expansion methods. It is observed that the performance of the modal flexibility method is comparable with existing methods. NMD also have the potential to expand the mode shapes though it is seen more sensitive to the distribution of error between FEM and actual test data.

  • The 610 m high Canton Tower (formerly named Guangzhou New Television Tower) is currently considered as a benchmark problem for structural health monitoring (SHM) of high-rise slender structures. In the benchmark study task I, a set of 24-hour ambient vibration measurement data has been available for the output-only system identification study. In this paper, the vector autoregressive models (ARV) method is adopted in the operational modal analysis (OMA) for this TV tower. The identified natural frequencies, damping ratios and mode shapes are presented and compared with the available results from some other research groups which used different methods, e.g., the data-driven stochastic subspace identification (SSI-DATA) method, the enhanced frequency domain decomposition (EFDD) algorithm, and an improved modal identification method based on NExT-ERA technique. Furthermore, the environmental effects on the estimated modal parameters are also discussed.

  • A new modal analysis method for rotor systems with periodically time-varying parameters is proposed. The essence of method is to introduce modulated coordinates to derive the equivalent time-invariant equation. This paper presents a modal analysis method using modulated coordinates fur general rotors, of which rotating and stationary parts both possess asymmetric properties. The equation of motion with time-varying parameters is transformed to an infinite order matrix equation with the time-invariant parameters. A theory of modal analysis for the system is presented with the infinite order equation and a couple of reduced order equations. A numerical example with simple asymmetric rotor is provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method

  • Statistical energy method is widely used for the prediction of vibrational and acoustical behavior of complex structures, such as ship building and automobile in mid-, high frequency ranges. However. in order to convince this SEA result, it is important to verify estimated SEA parameters, e. g. modal density, energy in each subsystem, damping loss factor, coupling loss factor. with possible other method. For modal density parameter, the experimental estimations via Experimental Modal Analysis are checked with those from finite element method for both beam- plate and plate-plate cans. Loss factors are calculated by Lyon's simple method for the two subsystem. finally. modal experiments are carried out by varying the mass added on the junction of two subsystem for the purpose of investigating the influence on the coupling loss factor's behavior.

  • Thickness of damping layer in sandwich plate needs to be optimized in order to make modal loss factor of the sandwich plate maximum. Since previous studies were interested in noise reductions over high frequency range, the modal properties were derived based on simply supported boundaries. This conventional formula is approximately applicable to other boundary conditions over high frequency range only. The purpose of this study is to propose a method to determine optimum damping layer thickness of sandwich plate for maximum modal damping in low frequency range when the boundary condition is not a simple support. The conventional RKU equation based on simply supported boundary is modified to reflect other boundary conditions and the modified RKU equation is subsequently applied to determine the optimum damping layer thickness for arbitrary conditions. In order to reflect frequency-dependent characteristics of elastic modulus of the damping layer, an iteration method is proposed in determining the modal properties. Test results on sandwich plates for optimum damping layer thickness are compared with predictions by the proposed method and conventional method.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop acoustic substructure synthesis method that can be applied to acoustic modal analysis of complex acoustic systems. Acoustic modal analysis method to be introduced here is a method that analyze acoustic natural mode shape of the complex acoustic system by the principle of CMS(component mode synthesis method). This paper describes the acoustic modal analysis of the acoustic finite element model of simple expansion pipe by acoustic substructure synthesis method. The results of acoustic modal analysis analyzed by Acoustic substructure synthesis method and the results, by FEM(finite element method) shows good agreement.
