  • This paper describes an integrated approach process to carry out pre-test, model correlation and updating analysis on the sub-frame of a vehicle. In this study, it was found that the modal test could be more efficient when the exciting point was selected on the area with high driving point residue. Such area could be located with the aid of finite element modal analysis. The model correlation was appraised in conjunction with the modal parameters between modal test and finite elements analysis. Also, the finite element model updating was obtained the good resultant using the iteration method based on sensitivity analysis results that carried out the variation of natural frequencies and MAC for the material properties. Finally, optimization of vehicle subframe was carried out the analysis of core location and physical properties by tow steps.

  • This paper presents a sorting method of mode vectors and natural frequencies about a rotor-journal bearing system. The rotor is solved by the finite element method, the bearing stiffness and damping coefficient are solved by the finite difference method. At any rotation speed section through the eigenvalue analysis of the system, mode vectors and natural frequencies not sorted are confirmed via the Campbell diagram and the MAC(modal assurance criterion). To sort mode vectors and natural frequencies of the section, a mode sorting method is presented through a method of rearranging the MAC of the mode vectors. Finally, the mode vectors and the natural frequencies are sorted by using the presented method, these are verified through the MAC.

  • This paper describes the analysis of dynamic characteristics and prediction of the stiffness for the joint between structural members. In the process of deriving the governing equations, the stiffness values responsible for the moment and shear force were modelled by using linear and torsional springs in the middle of a clamped-clamped beam. The sensitivities of the natural frequency and modal assurance criterion were investigated as a function of the dimensionless linear and torsional spring stiffness. The reliability of the predictions for the linear and torsional stiffness values was verified by the inverse computations of the stiffness matrix. The predictive and exact theoretical stiffness values were compared for the stiffness element in the finite element formulation, and their results show an excellent correlation. It is strongly anticipated that although the proposed methodology is currently limited to the analytical utilization, it will provide a useful tool to estimate unknown joint stiffness values based on the experimental natural frequency and mode shape.

  • The purpose of this paper is to verify a finite element model of an automotive exhaust system using Modal testing. In general, a lot of finite element models are used in initial design step of automotive development. One of them is a finite element model of an exhaust system. Verification on the finite element model of an automotive exhaust system is indispensable. In this paper, a finite element analysis on the exhaust system using MSC/NASTRAN is carried out, and the results are compared with those obtained by modal testing. By comparing MAC values of the analytical modes with the experimental modes, the finite element model of the automotive exhaust system is verified.

  • Deciding on an optimal sensor placement (OSP) is a common problem encountered in many engineering applications and is also a critical issue in the construction and implementation of an effective structural health monitoring (SHM) system. The present study focuses with techniques for selecting optimal sensor locations in a sensor network designed to monitor the health condition of Dalian World Trade Building which is the tallest in the northeast of China. Since the number of degree-of-freedom (DOF) of the building structure is too large, multi-modes should be selected to describe the dynamic behavior of a structural system with sufficient accuracy to allow its health state to be determined effectively. However, it's difficult to accurately distinguish the translational and rotational modes for the flexible structures with closely spaced modes by the modal participation mass ratios. In this paper, a new method of the OSP that computing the mode shape matrix in the weak axis of structure by the simplified multi-DOF system was presented based on the equivalent rigidity parameter identification method. The initial sensor assignment was obtained by the QR-factorization of the structural mode shape matrix. Taking the maximum off-diagonal element of the modal assurance criterion (MAC) matrix as a target function, one more sensor was added each time until the maximum off-diagonal element of the MAC reaches the threshold. Considering the economic factors, the final plan of sensor placement was determined. The numerical example demonstrated the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed scheme.

  • A series of experimental tests have been performed on a tube beam in which artificial damage is applied in order to address damage detectability using modal analysis. Modal parameters considered are frequency, displacement mode shape and strain mode shape CoMAC(Coordinate Modal Assurance Criterion) and Modal Vector Error have been adopted for presenting the change of displacement mode shape and strain mode shape. It is revealed strain mode shape is the most sensitive to damage.

  • Noise radiated from the powertrain is an important factor of the vehicle interior noise. In this paper, Finite Element(FE) model and Boundary Element(BE) models were created. The FE model was updated by doing a correlation between experimental modal analysis(EMA) values and finite element analysis(FEA) values. Main bearing forces were calculated using a running modal data. The forced vibration analysis was simulated using the software MSC/NASTRAN, and the radiated noise was predicted using the software LMS/VIRTUAL.LAB.

  • The Cuckoo search (CS) algorithm is a simple and efficient global optimization algorithm and it has been applied to figure out large range of real-world optimization problem. In this paper, a new formula is introduced to the discovering probability process to improve the convergence rate and the Tournament Selection Strategy is adopted to enhance global search ability of the certain algorithm. Then an approach for structural damage identification based on modified Cuckoo search (MCS) is presented. Meanwhile, we take frequency residual error and the modal assurance criterion (MAC) as indexes of damage detection in view of the crack damage, and the MCS algorithm is utilized to identifying the structural damage. A simply supported beam and a 31-bar truss are studied as numerical example to illustrate the correctness and efficiency of the propose method. Besides, a laboratory work is also conducted to further verification. Studies show that, the proposed method can judge the damage location and degree of structures more accurately than its counterpart even under measurement noise, which demonstrates the MCS algorithm has a higher damage diagnosis precision.
