The least square estimation is used frequently in experimental modal analysis techinque to eliminate noise signals. However, identified modal parameters are sometimes inaccurate, since the least squre estimation is sensitive to noise. In this paper, a new total least squre estimation, which is robust to noise signals, is developed and applied to experimental modal analysis technique such as Prony method and Circle Fit method. Several simulated results show that the proposed method is robuster to noise than conventional method.
A modal approach is proposed for dynamic analysis of concrete arch dam-reservoir systems in frequency domain. The technique relies on mode shapes extracted by considering the symmetric parts of total mass and stiffness matrices. Based on this method, a previously developed program is modified, and the response of Morrow Point arch dam is studied for various conditions. The method is proved to be very effective and it is an extremely convenient modal technique for dynamic analysis of concrete arch dams.
This paper presents a computational method for deformation modes of a flexible body in multibody system from the experimental modal analysis and an efficient method for flexible multibody dynamic analysis by use of the modes. It is difficult to directly use experimental modal parameters in flexible multibody dynamic analysis. The major reasons are that there are many inconsistencies between experimental and analytical modal data and experimental noises are inherent in the experimental data. So two methods, such as, a method for ortho-normalization of experimental modes and the other one for mode expansion, are suggested to gain deformation modes of a flexible body from the experimental modal parameters. Using the virtual work principle, the equation of motion of a flexible body is derived. The effectiveness of the proposed method will be verified in the numerical example of cab vibration of a truck by comparing analysis and test results.

This paper is mainly forcused on the application of modal analysis In analyze the geometrically non-linear buckling behaviors of large span spatial structures, and the evaluation of each eigen mode affected post-buckling behaviors and buckling loads. Modal analysis is applied . to derivation of the system matrices transforming actual displacement space into generalized coordinates space represented by coefficients multiplied in the linear combination of eigen modes which are independent and orthogonal each other. By using modal analysis method, it will be expected to save the calculating time by computer extremely. For example, we can obtain the satisfactorily good results by using about 7% of total eigen modes only in case of single layer latticed dome. And we can decrease the possibility of divergence on the bifurcation point in the calculation of post-buckling path. Arc-length method and Newton-Raphson iteration method are used to calculate the nonlinear equilibrium path.
Traditional structural dynamic analysis and Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) of large scale concrete civil structures rely on manufactured embedding transducers to obtain structural dynamic properties. However, the embedding of manufactured transducers is very expensive and low efficiency for signal acquisition. In dynamic structural analysis and SHM areas, piezoelectric transducers are more and more popular due to the advantages like quick response, low cost and adaptability to different sizes. In this paper, the applicable feasibility assessment of the designed "artificial" piezoelectric transducers called Concrete Piezoelectric Smart Module (CPSM) in dynamic structural analysis is performed via three major experiments. Experimental Modal Analysis (EMA) based on Ibrahim Time Domain (ITD) Method is applied to experimentally extract modal parameters. Numerical modal analysis by finite element method (FEM) modeling is also performed for comparison. First ten order modal parameters are identified by EMA using CPSMs, PCBs and FEM modeling. Comparisons are made between CPSMs and PCBs, between FEM and CPSMs extracted modal parameters. Results show that Power Spectral Density by CPSMs and PCBs are similar, CPSMs acquired signal amplitudes can be used to predict concrete compressive strength. Modal parameter (natural frequencies) identified from CPSMs acquired signal and PCBs acquired signal are different in a very small range (~3%), and extracted natural frequencies from CPSMs acquired signal and FEM results are in an allowable small range (~5%) as well. Therefore, CPSMs are applicable for signal acquisition of dynamic responses and can be used in dynamic modal analysis, structural health monitoring and related areas.

The purpose of this study is to develop acoustic substructure synthesis method that can be applied to acoustic modal analysis of complex acoustic systems. Acoustic modal analysis method to be introduced here is a method that analyze acoustic natural mode shape of the complex acoustic system by the principle of CMS(component mode synthesis method). This paper describes the acoustic modal analysis of the acoustic finite element model of simple expansion pipe by acoustic substructure synthesis method. The results of acoustic modal analysis analyzed by Acoustic substructure synthesis method and the results, by FEM(finite element method) shows good agreement.
Operational modal analysis is being widely used in aerospace, mechanical and civil engineering. Common research fields include optimal design and rehabilitation under dynamic loads, structural health monitoring, modification and control of dynamic response and analytical model updating. In many practical cases, influence of noise contamination in the recorded data makes it difficult to identify the modal parameters accurately. In this paper, an improved frequency domain method called Enhanced Least Square Complex Frequency (eLSCF) is developed to extract modal parameters from noisy recorded data. The proposed method makes the use of pre-defined approximate mode shape vectors to refine the cross-power spectral density matrix and extract fundamental frequency for the mode of interest. The efficiency of the proposed method is illustrated using an example five story shear frame loaded by random excitation and different noise signals.
The present paper proposes a generalized modal analysis procedure for non-uniform, distributed-parameter rotor-bearing systems. An exact element matrix is derived for a Timoshenko shaft model which contains rotary inertia, shear deformation, gyroscopic effect and internal damping. Complex coordinates system is adopted for the convenience in formulation. A generalized orthogonality condition is provided to make the modal decomposition possible. The generalized modal analysis by using a modal decomposition delivers exact and closed form solutions both for frequency and time responses. Two numerical examples are presented for illustrating the proposed method. The numerical study proves that the proposed method is very efficient and useful for the analysis of distributed-parameter rotor-bearing systems.
The Canton Tower is a high-rise slender structure with a height of 610 m. A structural health monitoring system has been instrumented on the structure, by which data is continuously monitored. This paper presents an investigation on the identified modal properties of the Canton Tower using ambient vibration data collected during a whole day (24 hours). A recently developed Fast Bayesian FFT method is utilized for operational modal analysis on the basis of the measured acceleration data. The approach views modal identification as an inference problem where probability is used as a measure for the relative plausibility of outcomes given a model of the structure and measured data. Focusing on the first several modes, the modal properties of this supertall slender structure are identified on non-overlapping time windows during the whole day under normal wind speed. With the identified modal parameters and the associated posterior uncertainty, the distribution of the modal parameters in the future is predicted and assessed. By defining the modal root-mean-square value in terms of the power spectral density of modal force identified, the identified natural frequencies and damping ratios versus the vibration amplitude are investigated with the associated posterior uncertainty considered. Meanwhile, the correlations between modal parameters and temperature, modal parameters and wind speed are studied. For comparison purpose, the frequency domain decomposition (FDD) method is also utilized to identify the modal parameters. The identified results obtained by the Bayesian method, the FDD method and a finite element model are compared and discussed.
The ambient vibration measurement is a kind of output data-only dynamic testing where the traffics and winds are used as agents responsible for natural or environmental excitation. Therefore an experimental modal analysis procedure for ambient vibration testing will need to base itself on output-only data. The modal analysis involving output-only measurements presents a challenge that requires the use of special modal identification technique, which can deal with very small magnitude of ambient vibration contaminated by noise. Two complementary modal analysis methods are implemented. They are rather simple peak picking (PP) method in frequency domain and more advanced stochastic subspace identification (SSI) method in time domain. This paper presents the application of ambient vibration testing and experimental modal analysis on large civil engineering structures. A 15 storey reinforced concrete shear core building and a concrete filled steel tubular arch bridge have been chosen as two case studies. The results have shown that both techniques can identify the frequencies effectively. The stochastic subspace identification technique can detect frequencies that may possibly be missed by the peak picking method and gives a more reasonable mode shapes in most cases.
