Static stability and vibration response of rotating carbon-nanotube-reinforced composite beams in thermal environment

  • The objective of this paper is to present free vibration and static stability analyses of rotating composite beams reinforced with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) under uniform thermal loads. Beam structural equations and CNT-reinforced composite (CNTRC) beam formulations are derived based on Timoshenko beam theory (TBT). The temperature-dependent properties of the beam material, such as the elastic modulus, shear modulus, and material density, are assumed to vary over the thickness according to the rule of mixture. The beam material is modeled as a mixture of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) in an isotropic matrix. The SWCNTs are aligned and distributed in the isotropic matrix with different patterns of reinforcement, namely the UD (uniform), FG-O, FG-V, FG- Λ and FG-X distributions, where FG-V and FG- Λ are asymmetric patterns. Numerical examples are presented to illustrate the effects of several essential parameters, including the rotational speed, hub radius, effective material properties, slenderness ratio, boundary conditions, thermal force, and moments due to temperature variation. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this study represents the first attempt at the finite element modeling of rotating CNTRC Timoshenko beams under a thermal environment. The results are presented in tables and figures for both symmetric and asymmetric distribution patterns, and can be used as benchmarks for further validation.

Vibration analysis of sandwich sectorial plates considering FG wavy CNT-reinforced face sheets

  • This paper presents the influence of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) waviness and aspect ratio on the vibrational behavior of functionally graded nanocomposite sandwich annular sector plates resting on two-parameter elastic foundations. The carbon nanotube-reinforced (CNTR) sandwich plate has smooth variation of CNT fraction along the thickness direction. The distributions of CNTs are considered functionally graded (FG) or uniform along the thickness and their mechanical properties are estimated by an extended rule of mixture. In this study, the classical theory concerning the mechanical efficiency of a matrix embedding finite length fibers has been modified by introducing the tube-to-tube random contact, which explicitly accounts for the progressive reduction of the tubes' effective aspect ratio as the filler content increases. Effects of CNT distribution, volume fraction, aspect ratio and waviness, and also effects of Pasternak's elastic foundation coefficients, sandwich plate thickness, face sheets thickness and plate aspect ratio are investigated on the free vibration of the sandwich plates with wavy CNT-reinforced face sheets. The study is carried out based on three-dimensional theory of elasticity and in contrary to two-dimensional theories, such as classical, the first- and the higher-order shear deformation plate theories, this approach does not neglect transverse normal deformations. The sandwich annular sector plate is assumed to be simply supported in the radial edges while any arbitrary boundary conditions are applied to the other two circular edges including simply supported, clamped and free.

혼합원형분포를 이용한 지방국도의 시간교통량 추정모형 (Modeling on Daily Traffic Volume of Local State Road Using Circular Mixture Distributions)

  • 본 논문에서는 우리나라 지방국도의 특정지점에서 수집된 교통량 자료를 이용하여 일일 시간교통량 추정모형을 개발하였다. 본 연구의 특징은 일일 24시의 시간변수를 원형변수로 취급하고, 지방부 교통량 자료의 특성상 출퇴근 시간에 교통량이 집중되는 이봉형의 현상을 감안하여 원형분포의 혼합모형을 고려하였다. 또한 시간대별 교통량의 분포가 요일에 따라 유사한 패턴을 가지는 데 착안하여 요일별 모형을 제시하였다. 혼합원형분포의 모수추정에는 EM알고리즘이 사용되었으며, 모형의 성능비교를 위해 가변수 회귀모형과의 비교를 실시하였다. 제시된 요일별 지방국도의 시간교통량 적합모형은 계측기의 손상 등으로 인한 교통량 결측자료의 추정에 효과적으로 사용될 수 있다.

INFRARED EMISSION FROM SPHERICAL DUST CLOUDS

  • Infrared emissions from spherical dust, clouds are calculated using quasi-diffusion method. We have employed graphite-silicate mixture with power-law size distribution for the dust model. The grains are assumed to be heated and cooled by radiative processes only. The primary heating source is diffuse interstellar radiation field. hut the cases with an embedded source are also considered. Since graphite grains have higher temperature than silicate grains, the observed IR emission is mainly due to graphite grains, unless the fraction of graphite grains is negligibly small. The color temperature of Bok globules obtained from IRAS 60 and $100{\mu}m$ data are found to be consistent with the dust cloud with graphite-silicate mixture exposed to average interstellar radiation field. The color temperature is sensitive to the external radiation field, but rather insensitive to the size distribution of the grains. We found that the density distribution can be recovered outside the beam size using the inversion technique that assumes negligible optical depth. However, the information within the beam size is lost for if beam convolved intensity distributions are used in deriving density profile.

와동에 의해 교란된 대향류 비예혼합화염의 화학종 전달기구 및 화염구조 (Species Transport Mechanisnn and Flame Structure of Counterflow Nonpremixed Flame Perturbed by a Vortex)

  • A two-dimensional direct numerical simulation was performed to investigate the flame structure of CH$_4$/$N_2$-Air counterflow nonpremixed flame interacting with a single vortex. The detailed transport properties and a modified 16-step augmented reduced mechanism based on Miller and Bowman's detailed chemistry were adopted in this computation. The results showed that an initially flat stagnation plane, on which an axial velocity was zero, was deformed into a complex-shaped plane, and an initial stagnation point was moved far away from a vortex head when the counterflow field was perturbed by the vortex. It was noted that the movement of stagnation point could alter the species transport mechanism to the flame surface. It was also identified that the altered species transport mechanism affected the distributions of the mixture fraction and the scalar dissipation rate.

일반 점프크기를 가지는 상관 확률보행의 파론도 효과 (Parrondo effect in correlated random walks with general jumps)

  • 일정한 시간 간격으로 임의의 점프크기가 계속 누적되는 이산시간 확률보행을 고려한다. 각 시점에서의 점프크기가 이전 시점의 점프크기에 종속되어 결정되는 상관 확률보행과 각 시점에서의 점프크기가 이전 시점의 점프크기와 무관하게 독립적으로 결정되는 무상관 확률보행의 점근적 평균을 각각 계산한다. 그리고 상관 확률보행과 무상관 확률보행을 임의적으로 혼합하여 결합하거나 또는 일정한 패턴에 따라 주기적으로 반복하여 결합하는 혼합 확률보행의 점근적 평균 식을 유도한다. 각 확률보행의 점근적 평균은 0으로 공정한 게임을 나타내지만 두 확률보행을 결합한 혼합 확률보행의 점근적 평균은 음수가 되어 지는 게임이 되거나 또는 양수가 되어 이기는 게임이 되는 파론도 역설 현상이 나타남을 확인하고 해당되는 각 모수의 범위를 찾는다.

경남 고성 구리광산 지역의 중금속 분산특성과 오염기준: 빈도분석과 확률도의 적용성 (Distribution Properties of Heavy Metals in Goseong Cu Mine Area, Kyungsangnam-do, Korea and Their Pollution Criteria: Applicability of Frequency Analysis and Probability Plot)

  • The frequency analysis and the probability plot were applied to heavy metal contents of soils collected from the Goseong Cu mine area as a statistic method for the determination of the threshold value which was able to partition a population comprising largely dispersed heavy metal contents into the background and the anomalous populations. Almost all the heavy metal contents of soil showed a positively skewed distributions and their cumulative percentage frequencies plotted as a curved lines on logarithmic probability plot which represent a mixture of two or more overlapping populations. Total Cu, Pb and Cd data and extractable Cu and Pb data could be partitioned into background and anomalous populations by using the inflection in each curve. The others showed a normally distributed population or an largely overlapped populations. The threshold values obtained from replotted frequency distributions with the partitioned populations were Cu 400 mg/kg, Pb 450 mg/kg and Cd 3.5 mg/kg in total contents and Cu 40 mg/kg and Pb 12 mg/kg in extractable contents, respectively. The thresholds for total contents are much higher than the tolerable level of soil pollution proposed by Kloke(Cu 100 mg/kg, Pb 100 mg/kg, Cd 3 mg/kg), but those for extractable contents are not exceeded the worrying level of soil pollution proposed by Ministry of Environment(Cu 50 mg/kg, Pb 100 mg/kg). When the threshold values were used as the criteria of soil pollution in the study area, $9{\sim}19%$ of investigated soil population was in polluted level. The spatial distributions of heavy metal contents greater than threshold values showed that polluted soils with heavy metals are restricted within the mountain soils in the vicinity of abandoned mines.

비상노심냉각수의 중력에 의한 주입 및 피동형노심내의 흐름율 분포모델의 개발 (Development of an ECCS Injection Model By Gravity and Flow Rate Distributions in the Passive Reactor Systems)

  • 이 연구에서는 피동형원자로의 과도현상을 분석하기 위한 KOTRAC 코드의 모델을 수정한 것이다. 이 코드에서 열수력학 모델로 도입하고 있는 mixture drift flux model은 피동형원자로와 같이 비상냉각수가 중력으로 주입되는 경우를 잘 모사할 수 있으나, 만일 가압기 밀림관 또는 수평관에서 상의 완전분리가 일어나게 될 때에는 증기상에서의 거의 영에 가까운 밀도로 인해 상당한 어려움이 존재하는 것이 밝혀졌다. 이 연구에서는 이러한 어려움을 극복하기 위해 일부 모델을 개선하였는데 가장 두드러진 것은 KOTRAC에서 사용하고 있는 flow distribution parameter를 Ishii 상관식으로 대체하여 코드를 수정하고 해석하였다. 이렇게 수정된 코드를 사용한 결과는 과도상태 해석코드인 RELAP5 /MOD3 계산결과와 비교적 잘 일치함을 볼 수 있었다.

EFFECT OF THE SHAPE OF IMPINGEMENT PLATE ON THE VAPORIZATION AND FORMATION OF FUEL MIXTURE IN IMPINGING SPRAY

  • The effect of the shape of the side wall on vaporization and fuel mixture were investigated for the impinging spray of a direct injection(DI) gasoline engine under a variety of conditions using the LIEF technique. The characteristics of the impinging spray were investigated under various configurations of piston cavities. To simulate the effect of piston cavity configurations and injection timing in an actual DI gasoline engine, the parameters were horizontal distance from the spray axis to side wall and vertical distance from nozzle tip to impingement plate. Prior to investigating the side wall effect, experiments on free and impinging sprays for flat plates were conducted and these results were compared with those of the side wall impinging spray. For each condition, the impingement plate was located at three different vertical distances(Z=46.7, 58.4, and 70 mm) below the injector tip and the rectangular side wall was installed at three different radial distances(R=15, 20, and 25 mm) from the spray axis. Radial propagation velocity from spray axis along impinging plate became higher with increasing ambient temperature. When the ambient pressure was increased, propagation speed reduced. High ambient pressures tended to prevent the impinging spray from the propagating radially and kept the fuel concentration higher near the spray axis. Regardless of ambient pressure and temperature fully developed vortices were generated near the side wall with nearly identical distributions, however there were discrepancies in the early development process. A relationship between the impingement distance(Z) and the distance from the side wall to the spray axis(R) was demonstrated in this study when R=20 and 25 mm and Z=46.7 and 58.4 mm. Fuel recirculation was achieved by adequate side wall distance. Fuel mixture stratification, an adequate piston cavity with a shorter impingement distance from the injector tip to the piston head should be required in the central direct injection system.
