  • The friction velocity is a quantity with the dimensions of velocity defined by the friction stress and density of a wall surface at near wall of flow condition. Also, the friction velocity is the hydraulic parameter describing shear force at the bottom flow. Moreover, it is a very important factor in designing open channel and essential to determine the mixing coefficient in the main flow direction. The estimation of the friction velocity are such as methods using channel slope, linear law of the mean velocity at viscous sub-layer and direct measurement of wall shear stress, etc. In the present study, we propose a friction velocity equation that has been optimized by combining the concept of entropy, which is used in stochastic method, and to verify the proposed equation, the experimental data measured by Song was used. The R squared for friction velocities between proposed equation and friction velocity formula analyzed 0.999 to 1.000 in a very good agreement with each equation.

  • The high oxidants, which occur the daily maximum concentrations in the afternoon, are transported into the other region via long range transport mechanisms or trapped within the shallow mixing boundary layer and then removed physically (deposition, transport by mountain wind, etc.) and chemically (reaction with local sources). Therefore, modeling formation of photochemical oxidants requires a complex description of both chemical and meteorological processes. In this study, as a part of air quality studies, we reviewed various aspects of photochemical modeling on the basis of currently available literature. The result of the review shows that the model is based on a set of coupled continuity equations describing advection, diffusion, transport, deposition, chemistry, emission. Also photochemical oxidant models require a large amount of input data concerned with all aspects of the ozone life cycle. First, emission inventories of hydrocarbon and nitrogen oxides, with appropriate spatial and temporal resolution. Second, chemical and photochemical data allowing the quantitative description of the formation of ozone and other photochemically-generated secondary pollutants. Third, dry deposition mechanisms particularly for ozone, PAN and hydrogen peroxide to account for their removal by absorption on the ground, crops, natural vegetation, man-made and water surfaces. Finally, meteorological data describing the transport of primary pollutants away from their sources and of secondary pollutants towards the sensitive receptors where environmental damage may occur. In order to improve our present study, shortcomings and limitation of existing models are pointed out and verification process through observation is emphasized.

  • Dimension of a transistor has rapidly shrunk to increase the speed of device and to reduce the power consumption. However, it is accompanied with several problems like direct tunneling through the gate dioxide layer and low conductivity characteristic of poly-Si gate in nano-region. To cover these faults, study of new materials is urgently needed. Recently, high dielectric materials like $Al_2O_3$, $ZrO_2$, and $HfO_2$ are being studied for equivalent oxide thickness (EOT). However, poly-Si gate is not compatible with high-k materials for gate-insulator. Poly Si gate with high-k material has some problems such as gate depletion and dopant penetration problems. Therefore, new gate structure or materials that are compatible with high-k materials are also needed. TiN for metal/high-k gate stack is conductive enough to allow a good electrical connection and compatible with high-k materials. According to this trend, the study on dry etching of TiN for metal/high-k gate stack is needed. In this study, the investigations of the TiN etching characteristics were carried out using the inductively coupled $BCl_3$-based plasma system and adding $Cl_2$ gas. Dry etching of the TiN was studied by varying the etching parameters including $BCl_3$/Ar gas mixing ratio, RF power, DC-bias voltage to substrate, and $Cl_2$ gas addition. The plasmas were characterized by optical emission spectroscopy analysis. Scanning electron microscopy was used to investigate the etching profile.

  • The present study has been motivated by the development of a reliable numerical methodology for simulation of kerosene/LOx coaxial swirl injectors. To deal with thermodynamic non-ideality and anomalies of transport properties pronounced at supercritical pressures, a set of subroutine libraries has been constructed based on the cubic equations of state, and applied to an existing flamelet analysis code. For computational efficiency, two-dimensional axisymmetric RANS formulation with swirl was adopted and validated successfully against an isothermal coaxial swirling jet. For the actual problem with high pressure combustion, however, numerical results show that the RANS models yield excessive production of turbulence probably due to high density gradient magnitude in the vicinity of mixing layer of swirling film flow, and imply strongly further improvement of the turbulence models.

  • In this study, we successfully fabricated a super-hydrophobic polymer layer on the surface of slide glass using the solubility difference of a polymer at two different solvents. After dissolving polystyrene (PS) resins in tetrahydrofuran (THF) as a good solvent and then adding ethanol(EtOH) as a poor solvent, we were able to fabricate super-hydrophobic surface. We also investigated the effect of EtOH addition, coating methods, solution mixing time and speed, and other alcohols on the surface hydrophobicity. The water contact angle (WCA) of the fabricated surface revealed $WCA>150^{\circ}$ and the microporous surface structure composed of microparticles with the size less than $5\;{\mu}m$.

  • A Raman LIDAR system has been designed and constructed for quantitative measurement of water vapor mixing ratio. The comparison with commercial microwave radiometer and global navigation satellite system(GNSS) was performed for the precipitable water vapor(PWV) profile and total PWV. The result shows that the total GNSS-PWV and LIDAR-PWV have good correlation with each other. But, there is small difference between the two methods because of maximum measurement height in LIDAR and the GNSS method. There are some significant differences between Raman and MWR when the water vapor concentration changes quickly near the boundary layer or at the edge of a cloud. Finally we have decided that MWR cannot detect spatial changes but LIDAR can measure spatial changes.

  • To observe the relationship between the oxygen vacancy and electrical characteristics of $TiO_2$ due to the $CO_2$ gases, the $TiO_2$ were deposited by the mixing gases of $Ar:O_2=20$ sccm:20 sccm and annealed with various temperatures. The bonding structure was changed with the annealing temperature from amorphous to crystal structure, and the oxygen vacancy was also changed with these bonding structures. The $CO_2$ gas reaction of $TiO_2$ films showed the variation in accordance with the bonding structure. The capacitance increased at the amorphous structure $TiO_2$, and the current also increased. However the oxygen vacancy decreased at this amorphous structure $TiO_2$. Because of the formation of oxygen vacancies is in inverse proportion to the amorphous structure. Moreover, the diffusion current in the depletion layer such as the amorphous structure showed the difference in accordance with the $CO_2$ gas flow rates.

  • The molecular electronic devices of organic materials are of current interest. Langmuir-Blodgett(LB) method is the most possible candidate for the development of the molecular electronic devices. One of the critical problems for applications of the LB films to the commercial products will be an electrical conductivity within a LB film. We studied the monolayer characteristics and electrical conductivity of the 1:1 mixture LB films of N-docosylquinolium-TCNQ and $TCNQ^0$. There were some differences in the $\pi-A$ isotherm and UV-visible absorption spectrum of N-docosylquinolium-TCNQ and 1:1 mixture. The small critical area of the $\pi-A$ isotherm for 1:1 mixture may result from the bilayer formation. We confirmed the incorporation of the $TCNQ^0$ with the N-docosylquinolium-TCNQ from the UV-visible absorption spectrum. But the electrical conductivity measured was $10^{-7}$ S/cm for the 1:1 mixture film layered at the surface pressure of 35 mN/m. We couldn't gain any electrical conductivity by mixing the $TCNQ^0$ into the N-docosylquinolium-TCNQ layer. We supposed that $TCNQ^0$ mixed in was not packed parallel to the TCNQ anion radical faces.

  • We have studied magnetic properties of Co/Pt multilayered films which have attracted great interest as high-density magneto-optical (MO) recording media due to their good MO properties. For this study, [Pt(45 )/Co(35 )]$\times$8 films were deposited with a Pt buffer layer of 60 on Si(100) substrate by alternating electron-beam evaporation in a high vacuum and were ion beam mixed by using 80keV Ar+ at 25$0^{\circ}C$. Especially, an external magnetic field was added to help changing magnetic property during ion beam mixing (IBM). The intermixing of Co and Pt layers after IBM was confirmed with Rutherford Backscattering Spectroscopy (RBS) and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). The MO property of the film was measured with magneto-optical Kerr spectrometer and the change of magnetic easy axis in the film plane was observed from Ker loop data. This anomalous result might be correlated with the change of atomic structure due to the intermixing effect.

  • The effect of aluminosilicate sol on the formation of mullite layer in zircon shell mold was investigated. Aluminosilicate sol was prepared by mixing of colloidal silica(NALCO(R) 1130) and an aqueous solution of aluminium nitrate at room temperature. The sol gelled at 50$^{\circ}C$ for 48 hrs. It was identified that the gel consists of aluminosilicate complexes and gibbsite. The coordination number of all aluminium ion bonded with silicon ion was four. Mullite phase formed by sintering above 1300$^{\circ}C$. XRD peak of mullite sharpened with increasing sintering temperature and the content of aluminium nitrate. Mullite phase displayed whisker-like 0.5~5${\mu}m $ particles. Separation between 1st and 3rd layers during sintering and the difference in thermal expansion coefficient between residual silica and mullite.
