Numerical optimization techniques combined with a three-dimensional thin-layer Navier-Stokes solver are presented to find an optimum shape of a stator blade in an axial compressor through calculations of single stage rotor-stator flow. Governing differential equations are discretized using an explicit finite difference method and solved by a multi-stage Runge-Kutta scheme. Baldwin-Lomax model is chosen to describe turbulence. A spatially-varying time-step and an implicit residual smoothing are used to accelerate convergence. A steady mixing approach is used to pass information between stator and rotor blades. For numerical optimization, searching direction is found by the steepest decent and conjugate direction methods, and the golden section method is used to determine optimum moving distance along the searching direction. The object of present optimization is to maximize efficiency. An optimum stacking line is found to design a custom-tailored 3-dimensional blade for maximum efficiency with the other parameters fixed.
The model cavity scramjet engine experiments are carried out using T3 free-piston shock tunnel. Upstream hydrogen fuel is injected before the cavity with different injection pressure. OH planar laser-induced fluorescence is used to investigate the combustion zone and piezoelectric pressure transducers are used to define the pressure rise due to the combustion. Main combustion region is a mixing layer which is between air and fuel. Also high OH fluorescence signal is appeared in the shear layer above the cavity in high equivalence ratio. From the OH signal in the cavity, this fuel injection system can be a role as a flame-holder.
A field experiment was performed to analyze the properties of SFRS(steel fiber reinforced shotcrete) against WMRS(wire mesh reinforced shotcrete) with some experimental parameters. The parameters were reinforcing methods(steel fiber and wire mesh), steel fiber contents(0.5%, 0.75%, and 1.0%), silica fume contents(0.0% and 10.0%), spraying thicknesses of layer(10㎝, 8㎝, and 6㎝), and spraying parts(side wall, shoulder, and crown). According to the analyzed results, the mechanical properties of SFRS such as compressive strength, flexural strength, and load-carrying capacity after cracks were improved. And the economic evaluation was also performed on the basis of the required thickness of the layer and other researcher's results for rebound ratios. From the results of this tests, it is found that the traditional WMRS may be substituted by the SFRS in the viewpoint of the economic evaluation as well as the mechanical properties. In additions, the silica fume, even if it is very expensive, can significantly improve the mechanical properties of the shotcrete regardless of mixing with or without the steel fiber.
For the design of selective catalytic reactors of NOx by $NH_3$, engineering approach can be performed to determine the reactor shape, mixing device and $NH_3$ injection system. This study shows the optimization of guide vanes to improve the flow pattern near the catalyst layer of SCR in a untility boiler. By varying their spacings and shapes, flow performance of guide vanes was analyzed to achieve an uniform velocity distribution which increases the NOx convesion efficiency, and a flow direction normal to the layer which minimises the erosion by the dust in the flue gas. Including these results, experimental and numerical studies for the SCR design were discussed.
Seasonal changes of abundance of the main phytoplankton groups of species (diatoms, dinoflagellates, chrysophytes, small flagellates and cryptophytes) and a set of environmental parameters were investigated in coastal and pre-estuarine waters of Peter the Great Bay (East/Japan Sea) in May-October of 1998 and 1999. Three periods of mass development were revealed: spring, summer and autumn blooms, with successive change of species. The conditions favourable for each group of species were determined. Driving mechanisms of the succession include nutrients transport through seasonal pycnocline by turbulent mixing, terrestrial nutrients supply by monsoon floods, nutrients supply by upwellings, and light control by the thickness of upper mixed layer. Summer succession could be explained by a simple SST-MLD diagram similar to Pingree S-kh diagram with sea surface temperature as indicator of stratification (S) and mixed layer depth as indicator of light availability (kh).
The purpose of this study is to understand the high saline water phenomenon of Handong-ri area in the eastern coast of Jeju Island, were investigate the tidal effect of groundwater level, variation of electric conductivity and temperature, geological logging on the monitoring wells, chemical water quality, and ratios of oxygen istope of groundwater and seawater Results in investigating variation of interface zone of freshwater and saline water represented that the hyaloclastites formed at below groundwater table is developing toward the coast; this area consisted of stratum of good permeability. Hyaloclastites is presumed the main path of the high salinity water There are a lot of movement by the tide at upper layer. Salinity of lower layer spreads to upper up step in proportion to tidal energy. Because of hydrogeological characteristics, Interface zone of freshwater and saline water is made, High salinity of groundwater occur in east coastal area of Jeju Island. Therefore, I think that high saline groundwater phenomenon is natural condition by simple mixing.
Numerical calculation has been performed to investigate the effect of inlet configuration on the growth rate of GaN layer on the heated susceptor. The conventional single inlet, where the gas is mixed by force in the inlet, is compared with separated flow inlet. Two-parallel gas flow $H_{2}$ and $NH_{3}$ are separated by a plate with finite length which are also parallel to the susceptor. The effect of separated plate length, carrier gas and flow rate of each precursor on the mixing of reactant gases and growth rate were investigated. Furthermore the three dimensional model is employed to predict the transverse variation of growth rate.
Recently, by the lack of fill material, the dredg and fill(hydraulic fill) method is commonly used in reclamation projects. Hydraulic fill method dredges the soil and send it with water through the transportation pipe to the site. The intial state of the hydraulic fill material is accordingly the mixture of water and soil skeleton which settles with time forming a new soil layer. The properties of new soil layer is governed the size of the soil skeleton, the flow velocity of mixing water, salt concentration, the distance from the discharge pipe outlet, and other dredging conditions when settling process occur. In this study, the effects of gradation of derdged soil on the deposition properties (with emphasis on the optimum spacing of the discharge pipes) was investigated by field test. It was found that the soft fine graind soil was forme at 350m from the discharge pipe outlet when the dredged material was classified as CL, while the soft fine grained soil was not formed even at the distance farther than 400m from the diacharge pipe outlet when the dredged material was classified as SM.

The flowfield of transverse jet in a supersonic air stream subjected to shock wave turbulent boundary layer interactions is simulated numerically by Generalized Taylor Galerkin(GTG) finite element methods. Effects of turbulence are taken into account with a two-equation (k-$\varepsilon$) model with a compressibility correction. Injection pressures and slot widths are varied in the present study. Pressure, separation extents, and penetration heights are compared with experimental data. Favorable comparisons with experimental measurements are demonstrated.
