Plastic wastes, particularly polyethylene terephthalate (PET) generated from used bottled water constitute a worldwide environmental issue. Reusing the PET waste for geotechnical applications not only reduces environmental burdens of handling the waste, but also improves inherent engineering properties of soil. This paper investigated factors affecting shear strength improvement of PET-mixed residual soil. Four variables were considered: (i) plastic content; (ii) plastic slenderness ratio; (iii) plastic size; and (iv) soil particle size. A series of unconfined compression tests were performed to determine the optimum configurations for promoting the shear strength improvement. The results showed that the optimum slenderness ratio and PET content for shear strength improvement were 1:3 and 1.5%, respectively. Large PET pieces (i.e., $1.0cm^2$) were favorable for fine-grained residual soil, while small PET pieces (i.e., $0.5cm^2$) were favorable for coarse-grained residual soil. Higher shear strength improvement was obtained for PET-mixed coarse-grained residual soil (148%) than fine-grained residual soils (117%). The orientation of plastic pieces in soil and frictional resistance developed between soil particles and PET surface are two important factors affecting the shear strength performance of PET-mixed soil.

Compostable household wastes(mainly food residues) were composted in a small bin for 30 days, in which compostable household wastes were fed every day and mixed thoroughly under aerobic conditions. Three small bins were employed. In the first bin only recycled compost was composted, in the second, compostable household wastes with recycled compost, and in the third compostable household wastes with recycled compost and vermiculture. The correct decomposition rate of each composting material was calculated during composting. Total reduced rate of the weight after 30 days was 57.32% when composting the compostable household wastes with recycled compost, and 64.71% when composting them with recycled compost and vermiculite. In the case of composting the compostable household wastes with the recycled compost, the total weight reduction rate for a day was 6.81% and the total decomposition rate 6.81%. Their difference was not great. But in the case calculated with only compostable household wastes the total weight reduction rate was 56.34% and the decomposition 6.79%. When compostable household wastes were composted with the recycled compost and vermiculite, the total weight reduction rate was 64.99% and the decomposition rate 1.48%, but the total weight reduction 4.36% and the decomposition rate 35.46% when calculated with only compostable household wastes. MgO, $K_2O$ and Cr concentrations in the composting mixture during the early composting time were higher when composted with vermiculite than without it, but organic matter, CaO, NaCl, and $P_2O_5$ concentrations were contrarily diluted because of their lower concentration of vermiculite when compostable household wastes were composted with vermiculite.
when the explosive wastes to be treated as designated wastes are brought into the wastes treatment plant by mistake and lead to an explosion in the wastes disposal process, many people and property damage are involved. Waste should be treated properly. As mentioned in this paper, ignition reac- tion tests of ignitable re-burning of explosives packing material waste (solid butadiene) confirmed that ignition was easily occurred, and that even small ignition sources were easily ignited and burned quickly and explosively. In particular, when explosives are loaded into incineration wastes in large quantities and mixed with organic compound wastes, such as fire and explosion accidents caused by explosives packing materials at waste disposal sites, flammable and oxidative gases are generated due to mutual oxidation and pyrolysis It is confirmed that there is a possibility that ignition sources such as spark ignite and instantaneously lead to explosion. It is hoped that this study will be a small reference for on - site detection in the field of fire, and it is expected that the fire - fighting agency will be recognized as a fire investigation agency and will contribute to the improvement of the credibility.

After feeding mixed samples, VS ranged from 60 to 80% of total costs in 15 days. EC ranged from1.21 to 2.45, 1.25 to 2.1 and 1.2 to 1.88mS/cm when worms were fed with a mixture of by-products of tidal current and sewage sludge, a mixture of by-products of algae producy, and food wastes and a mixture of by-products of algae producy, sewage sludge and food wastes. That means the kinds of mixture don't have any negative impacts on worms survival. With the feed with a mixture of by-products of algae producy and food wastes and a mixture of by-products of algae producy, sewage sludge and food wastes, pH shows stable 5.4 to 6.7, and 6.2 to 7.4 where is suitable for worms. But a mixture of by-products of algae producy and sewage sludge is out of proper scope for raising worms, in other words, extra care will be necessary. In case of Eh, a mixture of by-products of algae producy and sewage sludge make eh negative (-) in early stage so also when feeding worms, also extra care will be needed. NaCl ranged from 0.32 to 0.82% or form 0.23 to 0.61% when a mixture of by-products of algae producy and food wastes and a mixture of by-products of algae producy, sewage sludge and food wastes were fed. So taking care of salts will be essential whenever feeding.
The sludge wastes fermentation process reactors were operated to produce the VFAs(volatile fatty acids) as supplemental carbon sources and to determine the optimum operating conditions. The experiment was carried out by varied mixture ration of 400:0 350:30 300:100 200:200 and operating temperature 2$0^{\circ}C$ 3$0^{\circ}C$ and 4$0^{\circ}C$ The results were as follows: Higher VFAs production rate observed at higher mixed ratio of primary sludge. When the mixed ratio of primary sludge and return sludge were 400:0 350:50 300:100 200:200 respectively. VFAs production are were 829.6mg/l 944.2 mg/l 597.9mg/ml an d441.6 mg/l , respectively. the yield of VFAs increased with temperature, but decreased with initial TSS concentration Because fermented sludge has relatively low nitrogen and phosphorus and relatively high VFAs it can be used as a substitute for external carbon in biological nutrient removal process.
The incineration tests of mixed industrial wastes using the stoker type incinerator are carried out to investigate the partitioning characteristics of heavy metals during incineration. The results obtained from this study are as follow. The partitioning characteristics of heavy metals throughout this incinerator are found that, at given condition of $700^{\circ}C$, the elements with the relatively high boiling point such as Cr, Cu and Pb are partitioned into a bottom ash, a fry ash captured tv cyclone, and a flue gas stream, 67~88%, 2~19% and 6~16% of initial amount entering the incinerator, respectively, but the Cd and Hg of 75~81% is vaporized into the flue gas. It appears that the partitioning characteristics according to the particle size of ash is different between the bottom ash and the fly ash. For bottom ash, the fraction of partitioning into 75${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ oversized particles is reatively high. For fly ash, the characteristics of distributions with the particle size can not be clearly shown.
The objectives of this study are to examine combustion characteristics of E.V.A. and rubber wastes by fixed-bed incinerator, The results are as follows. Combustion temperature with time rises rapidly, and mass of E.V.A. reduces at short time in E.V.A. combustion. In variation of air-fuel ratio (m), ice ideal values of m of E.V.A. and rubber are 2.5, 1.5 respectively. Mixed-waste combustion is more economic than single E.V.A. combustion, because we can get high combustion efficiency (94.0~99.0%) at 2.0 air-fuel ratio of mixed-waste combustion. Removal efficiencies of SO2 at cooling tower are about 20%. The combustion efficiencies of rubber are over 98.0% according to the experimental conditions.
A series of consolidated undrained triaxial compression testes were performed to increase field applications of soil admixtures mixed with short fiber. Kaolin clay and three types of fiber were selected and auto cutter was used to obtain reliable length of fibers. Remolded soil specimens were tested for obtaining the basic data to be applied to the reinforcement of soft clay, embankment or barrier and clay liner of wastes landfill etc. Conversion equations from weight to volume of clay mixed with short fiber are introduced and relationships between fiber content and fiber concentration are derived. It is found that reinforcing effect by aspect ratio and mixing ratio of short fiber decreases as confining pressure increases. The best efficient reinforcing effect is given at the aspect ratio of 80~120 and the fiber content of 1.2%~2.4% and the fiber diameter of 0.27mm.

Recently the treatment of industrial wastes by membrane processes has drawn much attention due to increasing demands for clean technology. In the process investigated in this study, metal species in the acidic wastes are precipitated as metal hydroxide forms in a neutralization tank, and acid and base solutions are regenerated by water-splitting electrodialysis(WSED) to be reused in the process. Material balances of the processes for treating pickle liquor and mixed wastewater were calculated to explain conceptual design of the process. Experiments for neutralization precipitation with KOH and NaOH for mixed wastewater were carried out to precipitate metal hydroxide and to recover salt solution as supernatant. Also WSED of the salt solutions producing acid and base was tested in 2 or 3 compartment stacks using KCl and NaCl to investigate the effects of stack configurations on the WSED performance.

The influence of agitation speed on the yeast growth was investigated in the production of probiotic feed from pulverized liquified food wastes by aerobic fermentation. A yeast Kluyvermyces marxianus was selected through a preliminary screening. The yeast was cultured by 2liter jar fermenter. in 10% solid(w/v) substrate of liquified food waste at $35^{\circ}C$ with each different agitation speed of 500, 900 and 1200 rpm. For the acceleration of enzyme excretion mixed culture with Aspergillus oryzae was also attempted and the results were compared to those of single culture. As results the viable cell number was increased by increasing agitation speed. But it showed highest value in 900rpm and then decreased in 1200rpm. The mixed culture increased amylase activity and growth rate, but did not seem to enhance the highest viable cell count in the final fermentation stage.
