A Literature Study on the External Treatment of a Burn (火傷의 外治法에 對한 文獻的 考察 (外用藥을 중심으로))

  • The burn is acute skin injury caused by fire, hot water. steam. hot oil, sour and salty. It is occurred frequently in the daily life as well as oriental therapy like moxibustion therapy, physical therapy. Nevertheless, medical treatment of the burn is almost dependent on western cure. So we chose the oriental medicine textbooks and the oriental medicine journals that were dealing with the drugs, processing the drugs. peculiar treatment put first external cure. The results were as follows; 1. The burn is acute skin injury caused by fire, hot water, steam, hot oil, sour and salty. 2. The burn cause blisters, irritability and restlessness, nausea, dryness of mouth, constipation, in case of serious, coma, dyspnea and death. The early stage of the burn, blisters form by skin damage and they burst into skin ulceration from which pus issues, the latter term, the wound form scab and healed up. 3. In a light case, medical treatment of the burn was used external treatment by medicine for externalism use, in a serious case, it was used both as an internal remedy and medicine for outward application. Also in the early stage, it was careful of using the cold and cool medicine, as the process of healing, it was used alleviating pain, detoxicating, moistening the skin, growing muscle and skin, convergence, evacuating pus, regeneration of the tissue, strengthen the spleen and nourishing the stomach. 4. The external treatment medication is Herba Ephedrae Oil(麻油), Radix ET Rhizoma Rhei(大黃), Glauberitum(寒水石), Water(水), Pig OiI(猪油), Pig Fat(猪脂), Radix Angelicae Gigantis(當歸), Rhizoma Coptidis(黃連), Cortex Phellodindri(黃栢). The White of an Egg(鷄子淸), Raw Honey(生蜜), Honey(蜜), Wine(酒), Etc. It is mostly the cold and cool medications. 5. Soft extracted and powered dosage form in external treatment is much used. The soft extracted form(32times used) are mostly Chung Ryang paste(淸凉膏) and Fructus Papaveris paste(罌粟膏). The powered form(30times used) are mostly Bingsang Powder(氷霜散), Bosaenggugo Powder(保生救苦散), Sahwang Powder(四黃散). The others is much a various powder adding solvent. 6. If varicella stage, erosion after varicella stage, oozing stage and extreme pain stage, the powder adding solvent is much used. If little oozing stage. ulcering stage, scabing stage and a chronic stage, Soft extracted dosage form is much used. 7. The most many(26.65%) used method is that apply each medication power mixed water(水), wine(酒), honey(蜜) in a wounded part.

  • A compact adsorption-based process for removal of carbon dioxide and nitrogen from natural gas has been discussed. Among the adsorption-based processes, especially, the pressure swing adsorption (PSA) process has been a suitable unit operation for the purification and separation of gas because of low operation energy and cost. A step cycle is made up of pressurization, feed, equalization, blowdown and rinse. In this work, the PSA process is composed of zeolite 13X and carbon molecular sieve (CMS) for removal of carbon dioxide and nitrogen from mixed gas containing $CH_4/CO_2/N_2$ (75:21:4 vol%). A CMS selectively removes carbon dioxide and a zeolite 13X separates nitrogen from methane. CMS is investigated experimentally due to the high throughput of the faster diffusing component ($CO_2$). The gas composition of top, bottom and feed tank was measured with the gas chromatography (GC) using TCD detector, helium as carrier gas and packed column for analysis of methane, carbon dioxide, and nitrogen.

Screening of Effective Extraction Conditions for Increasing Antioxidant Activities from Fronds of Osmunda japonica (고비의 항산화활성 증가를 위한 효율적인 추출조건 탐색)

  • This study was conducted to investigate the optimum condition of extraction from fronds of Osmunda japonica to increase antioxidant compounds and antioxidant activity. Powder (1 g) of lyophilized fronds were mixed with three different solvents (MeOH, 80% EtOH and water). Extraction was carried out using not only by immersion (room temp.), heating ($60^{\circ}C$) and stirring (200 rpm) for 6 h, but also by sonication in 42 kHz ultrasonic bath for 15, 30 and 45 min. Extracts were filtered, and adjusted up to 50 mL to determine contents of soluble solids, total polyphenols and total flavonoids. Antioxidant capacity was measured by radical scavenging activity of 0.15 mM DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) and 7.4 mM ABTS [2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid)] radical. Among the solvents, MeOH and 80% EtOH appeared to be effective for extraction. Extract obtained from sonication in MeOH for 15 min resulted high polyphenol contents (45.15 $mg{\cdot}g^{-1}$ db) and DPPH radical scavenging activity ($RC_{50}$= 0.35 $mg{\cdot}mL^{-1}$). The highest flavonoid contents was obtained from immersion or heating extraction with MeOH (38.10~38.10 $mg{\cdot}g^{-1}$ db). ABTS radical scavenging was high in same extraction with 80% EtOH ($RC_{50}$= 0.21~0.22 $mg{\cdot}mL^{-1}$). Altogether, our results indicate that the extraction using ultrasonic bath with MeOH as a solvent (for 15~30 minutes) was the most effective way not only for increasing various antioxidant activities but also for saving labor and time in case of fronds of Osmunda japonica.

New Magnetic Phases of Fe-N and Mn-Al Alloys Produced by Mechanochemical Milling (기계적 밀링 및 화학적 추출법에 의해 제조한 Fe-N 및 Mn-Al계의 새로운 자성재료)

  • The structural change and magnetic properties of mechanically milled Fe-N and Mn-Al alloy powders have been investigated by XRD, TEM, VSM, $M\"{o}ssbauer$ spectroscopy and inelastic neutron scattering measurements. During milling of ${\gamma}'-Fe_{4}N$ powders, and fcc ${\gamma}'-Fe_{4}N$ phase is transformed to a bct ${\alpha}'-Fe(N)$ phase by stress-induced martensitic transformation, being accompanied by an initial increase in saturation magnetization. During annealing the bct ${\alpha}'-Fe(N)$ nanocrystalline phase which is obtained by mechanical grinding for a long time, an ${\alpha}'-Fe_{16}N_{2}$ phase partially appears as an intermediate phase at 673~773 K, causing an increase in saturation magnetization. During milling of Mn-45, 70 and 85 at.% Al mixed powders, Al atoms are partially solubilized into an ${\alpha}-Mn$ phase. The Al supersaturated ${\alpha}-Mn-type$ phases change from paramagnetic to ferromagnetic : the saturation magnetization is 11 emu/g for the as-milled Mn-70 at.% Al powders. Moreover, by removing almost all Al atoms from the as-milled Mn-85 at.% Al powders using chemical leaching, the saturation magnetization increases up to 36 emu/g. The above bct ${\alpha}'-Fe(N)$ and ferromagnetic ${\alpha}-Mn$ type alloys are the magnetic materials found for the first time, by using the present mechanochemical process.

  • A 12-year-old, 8.0 kg, spayed female, mixed-breed dog was presented to the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital of Chungnam National University (VMTH, CNU). That case has been growing up mass in her left upper hindlimb about for 2 years and has showed vomiting and anorexia for 3 days. The patient was diagnosed with mast cell tumor on the basis of fine-needle aspiration (FNA) cytology techniques. According to World Health Organization clinical staging system for diagnosing mast cell tumors, it was classified into stage IIIa. The patient was treated by adjuvant corticosteroid therapy, but complete surgical excision was not achieved by owner's request. In the early stage of therapy, the size of the mass was gradually reduced with only adjuvant glucocorticoid therapy, so the patient's general condition was maintained well. But after 53 days later, the treatmant was not effective anymore and mass size was increased. Two months later, she was euthanized because of intermittent vomiting and severe respiratory distress. Splenic mass, duodenal ulceration, liver mass and infiltrated mast cell tumor in upper hindlimb muscle region were found in necropsy examination.

Evaluation of Winter Annual Weed Vicia angustifolia as Green Manure (두과 월년생 잡초 살갈퀴의 녹비 이용성 검토)

  • Vicia angustifolia L. is native plant of winter annual leguminous weed in Korea. Objective of this research was to investigate the effects of V. angustifolia as green manure for rice production in sustainable agriculture. Seed size of V. angustifolia was smaller than that hairy vetch as control plant, while seed number in same amount was approximately 1.4-fold higher. V. angustifolia started stem elongation in early April. In addition, flowering and dead-ripe stages of the plant reached at May $5^{th}$ and June $1^{st}$, respectively. Growth of V. angustifolia-barley mixed cropping system in upland was promoted up to 101 cm of plant length compared to 46.6 to 60.9 cm that grown in paddy. Biomass yield of V. angustifolia was 14.5 kg $ha^{-1}$ in single cropping system of paddy soil, and the amount of nitrogen was 65 kg $ha^{-1}$. Moreover, self-reseedling of fallen seed from V. angustifolia grown in previous year in paddy soil was significantly higher than that hairy vetch plant. These results suggested that V. angustifolia can be uses as green manure in addition to reducing the mineral fertilizer application in rice production for sustainable agriculture.

A Study on Plywood Glue Extender from Bark and Particle Board Sander Dust (수피(樹皮) 및 파티클보드 폐기분말(廢棄粉末)을 이용(利用)한 합판(合板)의 증량(增量)에 관(關)한 연구(硏究))

  • The shear strength of plywoods using Douglus-fir bark powder and particlebard sander dust(PSD), abandoned materials in plywood and particleboard industries, as extender to UF resin, was compared with that of plywoods using wheat flour. Extenders were mixed at the rate of 0%, 5%, 10%, 20%, and 30% of UF resin weight. In obtained results, the dry shear strength of all extended plywoods was highest at extending ratio 5% and the wet shear strength was highest at no extending and 5%. Douglas-fir bark powder-and PSD-extended plywoods had as high dry and wet shear strength as wheat flour-extended plywoods up to extending ratio 10% and 20% respectively. But at 300%, wheat flour-extended plywoods had higher shear strength. Douglas-fir bark powder and PSD size should have been reduced (enough to pass through 325 mesh screen) in order to develop the satisfactory mixing, spreading and plywood bond quality. But in this study the powders to pass through 100 mesh screen were used.

Antimicrobial Effect of Forsythiae Fructus Extracts on Several Food-Borne Pathogens (연교 추출물의 항균활성 검색 및 일부 식중독균의 증식에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was performed to investigate the antimicrobial effect of the Forsythiae Fructus extracts against food-borne pathogens. First, Forsythiae Fructus was extracted with methanol at room temperature and the methanol extracts were fractionated by using petroleum ether, chloroform, ethyl acetate, and methanol. The antimicrobial activity of the Forsythiae Fructus extracts was determined by using a paper disc method against food-borne pathogens and food spoilage bacteria. The methanol extracts of Forsythiae Fructus showed the highest antimicrobial activity against Salmonella paratryphimurium and Salmonella typhimurium. A synergistic effect in inhibition was observed when Forsythiae Fructus extract was mixed with Ulmus davidiana Japonica extract as compared to each extract alone. Finally, the growth inhibition curves were determined by using ethyl acetate extracts of Forsythiae Fructus against Shigella flexneri and Salmonella paratyphimurium. The aqueous extract of Forsythiae Fructus had strong antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus epidermidis at the concentration of 10,000 ppm. At this concentration, the growth of Shigella fexneri was retarded for more than 24 hours and for up to 12 hours for Staphylococcus epidermidis. In conclusion, the methanol extracts of Forsythiae Fructus efficiently inhibited Staphylococcus epidermidis and Shigella flexneri.

Effects of Temperature on Diacylglycerol Production by Enzymatic Soli-Phase Glycerolysis of Hydrogenated Beef Tallow (온도조절이 고상계에 경화우지로부터 디글리세리드의 효소적생산에 미치는 영향)

  • Diglyceride was prepared by reaction of hydrogenated beef tallow and glycerol (GL) in the presence of a Pseudomonas lipase. Both substrates were mixed at the ratio of GL/Triglyceride of 0.5 which is the stoichiometric molar ratio for the complete conversion of triglyceride (TG) to diglyceride (DG). DG can be obtained by solid phase-glycerolysis of hydrogenated beef tallow without use of organic solvents or emulsifiers by careful control of reaction temperature. Optimized reaction temperature condition was as follows: An initial incubation at$60^{\circ}C$ for 2h followed by the first temperature shift down to $55^{\circ}C$ for 4h, and then the second shift down to $50^{\circ}C$ for up to 3 days. There was a large decrease in the content of TG during the first $60^{\circ}C$ incubation for 2h. Even a prolonged incubation at $60^{\circ}C$ could not make a change of the composition of the reaction mixture at liquid state. By controlling the temperature lower than $60^{\circ}C$, reaction mixtures were solidified. The reaction temperature at $50^{\circ}C$ below the melting temperature of hydrogenaed beef tallow gave an 71% optimum yield of DG after 72h enzymatic glycerolysis and about 73% of total DG was 1,3-DG.

Processing of Powdered Smoked-Dried Anchovy Soup and Its Taste Compounds (훈건멸치 분말수프의 가공 및 정미성분)

  • The study was carried out to develop the powdered smoked-dried anchovy products as a natural flavoring substance. The processing conditions, chemical and taste compounds of products were as follows: The raw anchovy were washed, and then boiled 5 minutes in $5{\sim}6%$ NaCl and 1.0% sodium erythorbate solution. Boiled anchovy were smoked in smoking house at $40^{\circ}C$ for 4 hours as the first stage, and then increased temperature up to $80^{\circ}C$ as the second stage, and finally smoked 8 hrs at $80^{\circ}C$ to maintain the moisture content between 9 and 10 percent. The smoked-dried anchovy were pulverized and screened to be 50 mesh of particle size, and finally packed in PET/Al/CPP film bag. The moisture, crude lipid content and salinity of powdered smoke-dried anchovy were 9.4%, 9.6% and 6.9%, respectively. Fatty acid composition of product was mainly consisted of polyenes (43.4%) such as 22 : 6 and 20 : 5, followed by saturates (36.9%), monoenes (19.7%). The principal taste compounds of product were IMP, 466.5 mg/100g; free amino acids such as His, Tau, Pro, Lys, Ala and Glu, 1179.2 mg/100g; non-volatile organic acids such as lactic acid and succinic acid, 617.9 mg/100g; total creatinine, 595.9 mg/100g; small amount of betaine and TMAO. To make a instant soup, it was desirable for taste of products that powdered smoked-dried anchovy were mixed with 20% salt, 4.0% sugar, 3.0% MSG, 1.0% onion powder, 1.0% garlic powder and 1.0% black pepper.
