In the present work, a linear static analysis is presented for thin-walled prismatic box-beams made of generally anisotropic materials. A mixed beam theory has been used to model and carry out the analysis. Three different constitutive relations are assessed into the beam formulation. Simple layup cases having symmetric or anti-symmetric configuration have been chosen and tested to clearly show the effects of elastic couplings of the beam. Both 2D and 3D finite element structural analysis using the MSC/NASTRAN has been performed to validate the current analytical results. Results show that appropriate assumptions for the constitutive equations are important and prerequisite for the accurate prediction of beam stiffness constants and also for the beam behavior.
A structure is broken down into a number of substructures by means of the finite element method and the substructures are synthesized for the complete structure. The divided substructures take two types: fixed-free and free-free elements. The flexibility and stiffness matrices of the free-free elements are the Moore-Penrose inverse of each other. Thus, it is not easy to determine the equilibrium equations of the complete structure composed of two mixed types of substructures. This study provides the general form of equilibrium equation of the entire structure through the process of assembling the equilibrium equations of substructures with end conditions of mixed types. Applications demonstrate that the proposed method is effective in the structural analysis of geometrically complicated structures.
In this work, the structural response of thin-walled composite beams with pretwist angle is investigated by using a mixed beam approach that combines the stiffness and flexibility methods in a unified manner. The Reissner's semi-complimentary energy functional is used to derive the stiffness matrix that approximates the beam in an Euler-Bernoulli level for extension and bending and Vlasov level for torsion. The bending and torsion-related warpings induced by the pretwist effects are derived in a closed form. The developed theory is validated with available literature and detailed finite element structural analysis results using the MSC/NASTRAN. Pretwisted composite beams with rectangular solid and thin-walled box sections are illustrated to validate the current approach. Acceptable correlation has been achieved for cases considered in this study. The effects of pretwist and fiber orientation angles on the static behavior of pretwisted composite beams are also studied.

In this paper, absolute and differential eddy current signals from various defects in the steam generator tube are numerically predicted and their signal slope characteristics are investigated. The signal changes due to frequency increase are also observed. After studying signal patterns from various defects and frequencies, the analysis of mixed defect signals affected by the presence of a ferromagnetic support plate is attempted. For the signal prediction, axisymmetric finite element modeling is used and this leads us to the slope angle analysis of the signal. Results show that differential signals are useful for locating the position of a defect under the support plate, while absolute signals are easy to presume and interpret even though the effect of support plate is mixed. Combined use of these two types of signals will help us accomplish a more reliable inspection.
Three-point bending specimens have been used to investigate the mixed mode fracture of green sandstone. Dimensionless stress intensity factors and T-stresses were calculated first by using the finite element method for various crack lengths, crack angles and span to length ratios. It is shown that three-point bending specimens can provide the whole range of mode mixities from pure mode I to pure mode II, provided suitable values are chosen for the crack angle and span to length ratio. The fracture test results were also used to compare with predictions of different criteria. These comparisons show that modified criteria including the influence of the T-stress agree better with experiment than the conventional criteria but that no one criterion matches perfectly the test results.

In this work, a closed-form analysis is performed for the structural response of coupled composite blades with multi-cell sections. The analytical model includes the effects of shell wall thickness, transverse shear, torsion warping and constrained warping. The mixed beam approach based on Reissner's semi-complementary energy functional is used to derive the beam force-displacement relations. The theory is validated against experimental test data and other analytical results for coupled composite beams and blades with single-cell box-sections and two-cell airfoils. Correlation of the present method with experimental results and detailed finite element results is found to be very good.

A combined extrusion process studied here consists of forward and backward extrusion, and it is formed in single operation. The metal flow involved in the operation has appeared to be difficult to analyze accurately because of mixed directions of the flow. In this study, conventional two operations of a forward and a backward extrusions is transformed into one operation of mixed extrusion. A process designed by an industry expert is simulated by the rigid-plastic finite element method to investigate the metal flow and defects. In addition to the FEM simulation, experimental analysis has been carried out to confirm the design in industry, which includes material characterization, preliminary expriment, and whole experimental forming operation. The experimental results show that warm forming of extrusion is more desirable than cold working and hot forming in view of grain growth. Also two conditions of lubrication between workpiece and die has been investigated.

The angled crack which is the simplest and representative case in the mixed mode crack analysis has stimulated the interests of many investigators during past 20 years. In this study the conventional quadratic isoparametric elements were used in all regions except the crack tip zone where triangular singularity elements with 6 nodes were used. The stress intensity factor of K1 and KII were determined respectively by the displacement correlation method. The finite element analysis program in this paper based on maximum energy release rate criteria and the results obtaiend by this program were compared with those calculated from the maximum circumferential tensile criteria and those by Jenq and Shah's experiments of the same geometry and material properties

A hybrid RANS/LES approach, based on the Limited Numerical Scales concept, is applied to the numerical simulation of the flow around a square cylinder. The key feature of this approach is a blending between two eddy-viscosities, one given by the $k-{\varepsilon}$ RANS model and the other by the Smagorinsky LES closure. A mixed finite-element/finite-volume formulation is used for the numerical discretization on unstructured grids. The results obtained with the hybrid approach are compared with those given by RANS and LES simulations for three different grid resolutions; comparisons with experimental data and numerical results in the literature are also provided. It is shown that, if the grid resolution is adequate for LES, the hybrid model recovers the LES accuracy. For coarser grid resolutions, the blending criterion appears to be effective to improve the accuracy of the results with respect to both LES and RANS simulations.

In order to save time and efforts in generating finite element meshes in irregular houndaries of domains, it is needed to develop an automatic mesh-generator which can hoth promote the accuracy of solutions and reduce the run-time in operating finite ele- ment models. In this study, the advancing front technique of triangular mesh generation and the transforming technique from triangular meshes to quadrilateral meshes were used to de- velop a computer program for the automatic triangular and quadrilateral meshes in the mixed shape. Furthermore, to enhance the quadrilateral mesh quality, the techniques of Laplancian smoothing and interior mesh modification were employed. The mesh genera- tor was applied to evaluate its applicability to irregular and complex geometries such as Nakdong river bay. In has hoen shown that the automatic mesh generator developed is capable of automatically generating meshes for irreguiar and complex geometries with high qualities of meshes and with the simple input data of arbitrarily specified nodal spacing in bound- aries.
