  • The Digital Engineered Safety Feature Actuation System (DESFAS) of nuclear power plants actuates safety systems to mitigate severe accidents occurred in nuclear power plants. The reliability of the system should be evaluated in order to meet the reliability criteria of nuclear power plants. In this work, we have calculated and evaluated the lifetime of DESFAS by using Reliability Block Diagram (RBD) and failure rates of digital control components. Surveillance test is assumed in the evaluation. The result shows that the digital control component can be used in DESFAS system.

  • The present study was performed to examine the effect of fangchinoline, a bis- benzylisoquinoline alkaloid, which exhibits the characteristics of a $Ca^{2+}$ channel blocker, on cyanide-induced neurotoxicity using cultured rat cerebellar granule neurons. NaCN produced a concentration-dependent reduction of cell viability, which was blocked by MK-801, an N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonist, verapamil, L-type$Ca^{2+}$channel blocker, and L-NAME, a nitric oxide synthase inhibitor. Pretreatment with fangchinoline over a concentration range of 0.1 to 10 $\mu$M significantly decreased the NaCN-induced neuronal cell death, glutamate release into medium, and elevation of $[Ca^{2+}]_i$ and oxidants generation. These results suggest that fangchinoline may mitigate the harmful effects of cyanide-induced neuronal cell death by interfering with $[Ca^{2+}]_i$influx, due to its function as a $Ca^{2+}$ channel blocker, and then by inhibiting glutamate release and oxidants generation.

  • Despite the development of the various navigational equipment, such as GPS, ARPA, ECDIS, AIS, VDR, and hull monitoring system, marine accidents are still a leading concern in shipping industry. For all accidents over the reporting period, approximately 60 to 80% of the accidents was involved in human error. It means that in each case, some events which were associated with human error initiated an accident, and those failures of human performance led to the failure to avoid an accident or mitigate it's consequences. However, the improvement and the effort on the maritime human error are still limited in an elementary step. The objective of this paper is to propose a modified Human Factors Analysis and Classification System (HFACS) model in order to analyse the collision accidents of tug-barge ship.

  • In this paper, we theoretically and experimentally analyze the impact of speckle size of pseudo-thermal light source on ghost imaging. A larger size of speckle can bring improvements in SNR and visibility. At the same time, the edge blur of the retrieved image will become more serious. We also present a setup which can mitigate the edge blur of larger speckle while maintaining the advantages of higher SNR and visibility by changing the speckle size of the object beam with a concave lens.

  • This paper presents two distance geometry-based algorithms for wireless location in cellular network systems-distance geometry filtering (DGF) and distance geometry constraint (DGC). With time-of-arrival range measurements, the DGF algorithm estimates the mobile station position by selecting a set of measurements with relatively small NLOS (non-line-of-sight) errors, and the DGC algorithm optimizes the measurements first and then estimates the position using those optimized measurements. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithms can mitigate the impact of NLOS errors and effectively improve the accuracy of wireless location.

  • The Random Early Detection algorithm is widely used in the queue management mechanism of the router. We find that the parameters of the RED algorithm have a significant influence on the defense performance of the random early detection algorithm and discuss the robust of the algorithm in mitigating Low-rate Denial-of-Service attack in details. Simulation results show that the defense performance can be effectively improved by adjusting the parameters of $Q_{min}$ and $Q_{max}$. Some suggestions are given for mitigating the LDoS attack at the end of this paper.

  • Cognitive radio (CR) is considered one of the most promising next-generation communication systems; it has the ability to sense and make use of vacant channels that are unused by licensed users. Reliable detection of the licensed users' signals is an essential element for a CR network. Cooperative spectrum sensing (CSS) is able to offer better sensing performance as compared to individual sensing. The presence of malicious users who falsify sensing data can severely degrade the sensing performance of the CSS scheme. In this paper, we investigate a secure CSS scheme, based on the Kullback-Leibler Divergence (KL-divergence) theory, in order to identify malicious users and mitigate their harmful effect on the sensing performance of CSS in a CR network. The simulation results prove the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.

  • The healthcare and fitness wearable-device market is considered as the driving force of the entire wearable device market. However, there are concerns with respect to information privacy because wearable devices constantly collect sensitive data such as individuals' health information. Thus, there is a need for a comprehensive understanding from the perspective of information privacy concerns and related behavior. This study investigates factors considered in the privacy calculus of wearable fitness devices, and verifies differences obtained by the privacy calculus process according to the frequency of exercise. The results obtained from a survey of 248 undergraduate students in Korea revealed that service providers should consider users' interests and exercise characteristics in order to mitigate their privacy concerns and encourage continuous use of wearable devices. This study provides useful insights pertaining to users of wearable fitness devices, and targets researchers and practitioners.

  • Traffic noise is a significant national problem in many communities. Construction of noise barriers has been the most often used mechanism to mitigate vehicle noise for residents next to high density roadways. The most common materials for constructing noise barriers are metal. The character of the wall can be significantly modified by the type of surface treatment used on the wall body. Noise barrier walls can be softened through the use of plants. Greening Noise Barrier helps blend the roadway into the surrounding landscape and provides an interesting and aesthetic view of the road.

  • We report the results of extensive mixed mode simulations and theoretical analysis to quantify the contribution of the edge direct tunneling (EDT) current on the total gate leakage current of 80nm NMOSFET with SiO2 gate dielectric. It is shown that EDT has a profound impact on basic analog circuit building blocks such as sample-hold (S/H) circuit and the current mirror circuit. A transistor design methodology with zero gate-source/drain overlap is proposed to mitigate the EDT effect. This results in lower voltage droop in S/H application and better current matching in current mirror application. It is demonstrated that decreasing the overlap length also improves the basic analog circuit performance metrics of the transistor. The transistor with zero gate-source/drain overlap, results in better transconductance, input resistance, output resistance, intrinsic gain and unity gain transition frequency.
