  • Improving system boot time has become one of the most important issues in the system software arena. As Linux is widely used in the embedded system environment, extensive research has been conducted in order to mitigate Linux boot time delay. In this respect, this paper mainly focuses on the Hibernation-based boot mechanism, which is the boot mechanism based on Hibernation, as an alternative to the conventional boot sequence. The contributions of this work are as follows. First, we implement the Hibernation-based boot mechanism on a real embedded Linux system and describe the implementation details. Second, we observe the Hibernation-based boot procedures so that we can investigate the possibility whether the boot mechanism has room for improvement in terms of the boot time. Through the in-depth observation and analysis based on the real implementation, we anticipate that the Hibernation-based boot mechanism which adopts various optimization methods can provide maximum of 3.1 times faster booting performance compared to the conventional way.

  • For designing the database more efficiently, normailzation can be enforced to minimize the degree of unnecessary data redundancy and contribute to enhance data integrity. However, deep normalization tends to provoke multiple way of schema join, which could then induces response time degradation. To mitigate this sort of side effect that the normalization could brought, a number of field studies we observed adopted the idea of denormalization. To measure whether denormalization contributes to response time improvement, we in this paper developed two different data models about customer service system, one with perfect normalization and the other with denormalization, and evaluated their query response time behaviors. Performance results show that normalization case consistently outperforms denormalization case in terms of response time. This study show that the idea of denormalization, quite rarely contributes to that sort of improvement due ironically to the unnecessary data redundancy.

  • There is growing evidence that crosstalk between mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) cells and stromal microenvironments, such as bone marrow and secondary lymphoid tissues, promotes tumor progression by enhancing survival and growth as well as drug resistance of MCL cells. Recent advances in the understanding of lymphoma microenvironment have led to the identification of crucial factors involved in the crosstalk and subsequent generation of their targeted agents. In the present study, we evaluated the combinatory effect of blocking antibodies (Ab) targeting CXCR4 and VLA-4, both of which were known to play significant roles in the induction of environment-mediated drug resistance (EMDR) in MCL cell line, Jeko-1. Simultaneous treatment with anti-CXCR4 and anti-VLA-4 Ab not only reduced the migration of Jeko-1 cells into the protective stromal cells, but also enhanced sensitivity of Jeko-1 to a chemotherapeutic agent to a greater degree than with either Ab alone. These combinatorial effects were associated with decreased phosphorylation of ERK1/2, AKT and NF-${\kappa}B$. Importantly, drug resistance could not be overcome once the adhesion of Jeko-1 to the stromal occurred despite the combined use of Abs, suggesting that the efforts to mitigate migration of MCLs should be attempted as much as possible. Our results provide a basis for a future development of therapeutic strategies targeting both CXCR4 and VLA-4, such as Ab combinations or bispecific antibodies, to improve treatment outcomes of MCL with grave prognosis.

  • Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to advance the understanding of the relationship between host country image and cultural intelligence (CQ) on the attractiveness of expatriate destinations. Specifically, this study compares the different impacts of CQ on the relationship between host country image and subsidiary attractiveness by comparing a US-based subsidiary and a Vietnam-based one. Research design and methodology - A total of 445 Korean full-time workers responded through an online survey. The survey randomly showed the participants one of two conditions for a potential expatriate location. The participants were asked to answer a series of questions on the organizational attractiveness of the subsidiaries from the perspective of an expatriate candidate and respond to a series of questions on individual CQ. Results - Through a two-way ANOVA test, the results reveal that Korean expatriate candidates perceive that a Vietnam-based subsidiary is a less attractive destination for international assignment when compared to a US-based subsidiary. In addition, the positive moderating effect of cultural intelligence on the relationship between the host location and the subsidiary's attractiveness is stronger when Vietnam, rather than the US, is the assignment location. Conclusions - Drawing upon AUM theory, this study confirmed that unfavorable country image affects subsidiaries' attractiveness for expatriate candidates, due to anxiety. However, this study showed the role of employees' CQ to mitigate these challenges. This study suggests providing information on positive conditions of expatriate locations and building systematic process for enhancing individual CQ for organizations.

  • In this paper, CDD(Cyclic Delay Diversity)-DF(Decode-and-Forward)-Relay scheme is proposed for MC-CDMA(Multicarrier-Code Division Multiple Access) systems over multipath Rayleigh fading channels. The advantages of general DF schemes come at the expense of the spectral efficiency since the source and all the relays must transmit on orthogonal channels. In order to mitigate this disadvantage of general DF schemes, we have applied CDD techniques to each relays so that all the relays can transmit on single channel. It means that all R-D link channels can be considered as a single channel which is widely delay spread. Namely, it causes the increasing the number of multipath so that the frequency diversity gain can be achieved in MC-CDMA systems. By simulations, we have compared proposed one with general DF scheme. Therefore, it is confirmed that the proposed one can be a possible solution to achieve cooperative diversity gain without a reduction of spectral efficiency.

  • Recently, various recording technologies are studied for optical data storage. After standardization of BD (Blu-ray Disc) and HD-DVD (High-Definition Digital Versatile Disc), the industry is looking for a suitable technology for next generation optical data storage. Super-RENS (Super-Resolution Near Field Structure) technique, which is capable of compatibility with other systems, is one of next optical data storage. In this paper, we proposed a neural network-based nonlinear equalizer (NNEQ) for Super-RENS discs. To mitigate the nonlinear ISI (Inter-Symbol Interference), we applied NARX (Nonlinear AutoRegressive eXogenous) which is a kind of neural networks. Its validity is tested with the RF signal samples obtained from a Super-RENS disc. The performance of the proposed equalizer is superior to the one without equalization and that of the Limit-EQ in terms of BER (Bit Error Rate).

  • Understanding the gene flow from genetically modified (GM) crops to conventional crops is important to prevent and mitigate seed contamination caused by pollen-mediated gene flow. We conducted a field test to investigate the gene flow from diamondback moth resistant GM cabbage (Brassica oleracea var. capitata) containing cry1Ac1 gene, to a non-GM control line AD126. GM and non-GM cabbage plants were cultivated in the field and pollinated using Bombus terrestris under the nets during the flowering periods. After seeds were collected from non-GM plants, hybrids between them and the GM cabbages were screened by multiplex PCR targeting cry1Ac1 gene. Out of 878 germinated seedlings, 168 hybrids were found and the average gene flow frequency was 19.7%. Because cabbage is mainly pollinated by insect pollinators, large-scale field tests are needed to study gene flow of GM cabbage.

  • The recovery force and displacement occur due to the phase transformation from the martensite phase to the austenite phase induced by the mechanical loading or thermal loading. These recovery force and displacement depend on an initial geometrical configuration of SMAs and loading conditions. Although the SMAs generally generates large recovery forces, the sufficient recovery displacement cannot be expected without a proper design strategy. The functionality of SMAs is limited due to the unbalance between the large recovery force and the small recovery displacement. This study suggests the double coil SMA spring in order to amplifying the recovery displacement induced by the phase transformation. By predicting the recovery displacement of doble coil SMA springs and one coil SMA springs induced by thermal loading, we show that the double coil SMA spring not only mitigate the unbalance of performance but also have a large recovery displacement for its recovery force than one coil SMA spring.

  • This study analyzes whether there are differences in the level of compensation and pay-performance sensitivity between venture firms and non-venture firms listed on KOSDAQ. To test the above mentioned purpose, this study uses 726 firm-year data listed on KOSDAQ from 2006 to 2009. The results are as follow: First, we find that managers' compensation level of venture firms are higher than non-venture firms. Second, pay-stock performance sensitivity is higher than pay-accounting performance sensitivity in venture firms. Overall, because venture firms give a lot of stock-option to managers, compensation level of venture firms is higher than other firms. Also, venture firms set higher pay-stock performance sensitivity than pay-accounting performance sensitivity to mitigate short-sighted decision.

  • A study was conducted for the performance characteristics of methane taking recently the limelight in the world as a next-generation propellant, with the survey for state of the art in the development of methane/oxygen rocket engine being accompanied. Liquid methane as a rocket fuel has the favorable characteristics such as non-toxic, low cost, regenerative cooling capability, and potential for in-situ resource utilization (ISRU). The combination of liquid methane and liquid oxygen also provides the excellent performance including high specific impulse and low system mass. For these reasons, many researches have been actively carried out on the methane/oxygen engine, nevertheless, its technology readiness level is not that high enough just yet. Therefore, it is judged that it is the time to mitigate the technical gap with the space technology of advanced countries through a swift onset of the development of methane rocket engine.
