  • This paper presents a polynomial time algorithm to the minimum cardinality feedback edge set and minimum weight feedback edge set problems. The algorithm makes use of the property wherein the sum of the minimum spanning tree edge set and the minimum feedback edge set equals a given graph's edge set. In other words, the minimum feedback edge set is inherently a complementary set of the former. The proposed algorithm, in pursuit of the optimal solution, modifies the minimum spanning tree finding Kruskal's algorithm so as to arrange the weight of edges in a descending order and to assign cycle-deficient edges to the maximum spanning tree edge set MXST and cycle-containing edges to the feedback edge set FES. This algorithm runs with linear time complexity, whose execution time corresponds to the number of edges of the graph. When extensively tested on various undirected graphs both with and without the weighed edge, the proposed algorithm has obtained the optimal solutions with 100% success and accuracy.

  • This paper considers the Updating Minimum-weight Spanning Tree Problem(UMP), that is, the problem to update the Minimum-weight Spanning Tree(MST) in response to topology change of the network. This paper proposes the algorithm which reconstructs the MST after several links deleted and added. Its message complexity and its ideal-time complexity are Ο(m+n log(t+f)) and Ο(n+n log(t+f)) respectively, where n is the number of processors in the network, t(resp.f) is the number of added links (resp. the number of deleted links of the old MST), And m=t+n if f=Ο, m=e (i.e. the number of links in the network after the topology change) otherwise. Moreover the last part of this paper touches in the algorithm which deals with deletion and addition of processors as well as links.

  • An optimum structural design system for double hull oil tankers is developed based on the generalized slope deflection method which was previously proposed by the authors. For the optimization technique, the Hooke & Jeeves direct search method is applied to the minimum weight design problems with discrete design variables. A minimum weight design program is developed for the longitudinal members by the classification rules and for the transverse frames and the bulkhead members by the generalized slope deflection method. By this program, a minimum hull weight design of double hull oil tankers considering tank arrangement is performed and the design results are compared with existing ship. It is possible to find optimum tank arrangement and efficient types of hull structures for the minimum weight design of double hull oil tankers.

  • Generally in order to reduce the steel weight of stiffened plate, stiffener spaces tend to be narrow and the plate gets thin. However, it will involve more fabrication cost because it can lead to the increase of welding length and the number of structural members. In the yard, the design which is able to reduce the total fabrication cost is needed, although it requires more steel weight. The purpose of this study is to find optimum stiffener spaces to minimize the fabrication cost for the cargo tank of LPG Carriers. Global optimization methods such as ES(Evolution Strategy) and GA(Genetic Algorithm) are introduced to find a global optimum solution and the sum of steel material cost and labor cost is selected as main objective function. Convergence degree of both methods in according to the size of searching population is examined and an efficient size is investigated. In order to verify the necessity of the optimum design based on the cost, minimum weight design and minimum cost design are carried out.

  • Because the Energy Efficiency Design Index(EEDI) came into effect in 2013, it is necessary to develop a new technology to overcome $CO_2$ emission regulations. In structural design viewpoint, lots of researches are carried out to develop eco-friendly and high fuel efficiency ships by weight reduction. By using the automated compartment arrangement system and automated structural design algorithm which were developed by the authors, new researches are performing to combine the above two systems. However, the effect of weight reduction was not significant because structural designs by using these systems for the midship part was carried out only focused on the minimum still water bending moment. In this paper, at first, good compartment arrangements which give the minimum still water bending moment and(or) shear force were chosen by using the automated compartment system. And then, influence of shear force on weight reduction was investigated by using the automated structural design algorithm considering longitudinal strength, local strength and shear strength of longitudinal members in cargo holds. Conclusively, it is necessary to consider the minimum still water bending moment and shear force simultaneously to reduce the weight of mid-sized bulk carrier. Also, good compartment arrangement which gives much more weight reduction compared with existing ship was proposed.

  • The minimum weight design for simply-supported isotropic or symmetrically laminated stiffened cylindrical shells subjected to various loads (axial compression or combined loads) is studied by a nonlinear mathematical search algorithm. The minimum weight design in accomplished with the CONMIN optimizer by Vanderplaats. Several types of buckling modes with maximum allowable stresses and strains are included as constraints in the minimum weight design process, such as general buckling, panel buckling with either stingers or rings smeared out, local skin buckling, local crippling of stiffener segments, and general, panel and local skin buckling including stiffener rolling. The approach allows the consideration of various shapes of stiffening members. Rectangular, I, or T type stringers and rectangular rings are used for stiffened cylindrical shells. Several design examples are analyzed and compared with those in the previous literatures. The unstiffened glass/epoxy, graphite/epoxy(T300/5208), and graphite/epoxy aluminum honeycomb cylindrical shells and stiffened graphite/epoxy cyindrical shells under axial compression are analyzed through the present approach.

  • Submerged rubble structures include artificial reef and the mound part of the rubble mound breakwater. Artificial reef is a type of the submerged wave absorbing structure installed in a coastal zone to prevent beach erosion and designed to initially reduce the energy of incoming waves so that its run-up height and overtopping quantity can be decreased. In order to ascertain the stability of such submerged rubble structures, minimum weight of the rubble has to be calculated first from the incoming wave height using Hudson's formula or Brebner-Donnelly formula. Based on the calculated minimum weight, a model is built for use in a hydraulic model test carried out to check its stability. The foregoing two formulas used to calculate the minimum weight are empirically derived formulas based on the result of the tests on the rubble mound breakwater and it is, therefore, difficult for us to apply them directly in the calculation of the minimum weight of the submerged structures. Accordingly, this study comes up with a numerical simulation method capable of deformation analysis for rubble structures. This study also tries to identify the deformation mechanism of the submerged rubble structures using the numerical simulation. The method researched through this study will be sufficient for use for usual preparations of the design guidelines for submerged rubble structures.

  • Sword bean belongs to the subgenus Canavalia in the genus Canavalia. White and reddish varieties in sword bean were tested to obtain the basic information for improving the yield, quality, and cultural environments through the quantitative growth analysis. Growing plants were sampled at intervals of 10 days from 20 days after sowing. Whole plant weight increased during the period of 11-20 days after sowing in both varieties. The weight of each organ between two varieties increased similarly except leaf area. Whole plant weight changed more close to pod weight than any other characters. The leaf areas of both varieties increased from 50 days after sowing, var. white displayed S type curved line but var. reddish displayed slow S type curved line. The SGR of whole plant weight in both varieties had 3 maxima and 2 minima, 3 maxima and first minimum were shown at the same period but the second minimum was shown at different period. Both varieties showed bimodal curved line. All SGR of each organ and leaf area were shown the 2 maxima and 1 minimum in both varieties. The changes of SLA and LAR were not remarkable between two varieties but these were united together with the maximum of whole plant weight and root weight. ULWR and ULWR were shown similar in both varieties. Reddish variety was more prosperous in early growth stage than white variety because SLA, LAR and LWR were high. In surplus weight, both varieties increased rapidly during the period of 111-120 days after sowing that was applicable to the maximum SGR of pod weight. Surplus weight of var. white increased markedly during the same period comparing those of var. reddish.
