  • This paper proposes a new concept of a signal constellation of the recently introduced half-symbol-rate-carrier phase-shift keying (HSRC-PSK) modulations for bandwidth-efficient high speed data communications. Since the HSRC-PSK modulations contain different symbol energies representing the same bit sequences due to the loss of orthogonality of their HSRC signals, it is very hard to represent the symbol using the conventional signal constellation. To resolve the problem, two different energies are assigned to represent one symbol for the HSRC offset quadrature phase shift keying (OQPSK) modulation. Similarly, the different energies exist to display the different symbol for HSRC minimum shift keying (MSK) modulation. With the proposed signal space representation, HSRC-PSK symbol can easily be shown with a two-dimensional scatter plot which provides helpful information of evaluating HSRC-PSK signal's quality.

  • Multiple-input multiple-output systems can achieve a full sum rate (SR) via full duplex (FD). However, its performance is degraded by self-interference (SI) that occurs between the transmitter and receiver at the same node and thus is constrained by error floors. Conversely, half duplex (HD) can avoid the SI albeit at lower spectral efficiency, and the slope of its error curve is determined by the diversity order. In this study, a link selection scheme based on switching between FD and HD is examined as a simple method to improve the bit error rate (BER) performance of FD systems. In the proposed link selection algorithm, either FD or HD is selected based on the received minimum distance and signal-to-interference plus noise ratio. Simulation results indicate that the proposed hybrid FD/HD switching system offers significant BER performance improvement when compared with that of the conventional FD and FD based on only the received minimum distance under the same fixed SR. Under relatively sufficient SI cancellation, it is demonstrated to outperform the HD with a diversity advantage in low and medium signal-to-noise ratio region.

  • The conventional bit allocation scheme for MPEG-1 audio encoding searches the subband with minimum MNR(mask-to-noise ratio) repetitively until its operation is completed, which occupies most of its total computational complexity. In this paper, as a computationally efficient approximation of it, we propose a new bit allocation scheme with a simple subband search and compare it with the existing schemes[1][2] in terms of the computational complexity and sound quality. For the performance comparison, we used the pop music signal contained in SQAM(sound quality assess material) CD from EBU. Simulation results show that the computational complexity of the proposed method is about 42% of that of the existing one in [1] and the sound quality difference in terms of MNR between the two schemes is within the 0.2 ㏈, for the case of using the layer II at the bit rate of 128 kbps.

  • In video coding, it is important to improve the average picture quality as well as to maintain cosistent picture quality between consecutive pictures. In this paper, we propose a distortion-rate estimation method for MPEG-2 video and a forward rate control method, using the proposed estimation result, to be able to obtain the improved and consistent picture quality of CBR (Constant Bit Rate) encoded MPEG-2 video. The proposed distortion-rate estimation enable us to predict the distortion and the bits generated from an encoded picture at a given quantization step size and vice versa. The most attactive features of proposed distortion-rate estimation are its accuracy and low computational complexity enough to be applied to the practical video coding. In addition, the proposed rate control first determined a quantization parameter per frame by following procedure: distortion-rate estimation, target bit allocation, distortion constraint and VBV(Video Buffer Verification) constraint. And then this quantization parameter is applied to the encoding so that improved and consisten picture quality can be obtained. Furthermore the proposed rate control method can solve the error propagation problem caused by scene change or anchor picture degradation by using the B-picture skipping and the guarantee of the minimum bit allocation for the anchor picture. Experimental results, comparing the proposed forward rate control method with TM5 method, show that the proposed method makes more improed and consistent picture quality than TM5.

  • In this paper, we discuss parameters of line code and simulate a same optical ethernet having minimum bandwidth(MB810) and non-minimum bandwidth line code(8B/10B) to present the possibility of improving of transmission performance using minimum bandwidth line code on the high speed optical ethernet. We design the high speed optical ethernet using Serial type LAN PHY 10GBASE-E(WDM type LAN PHY 10GBASE-LX4) for the single(multi) channel link. To compare the transmission performance of MB810, 8B/10B line code we measure the bit error rate(BER) according to the received optical power of single and multi channel link.

  • The signal in wireless multi-path channel is affected by fading and ISI because of high data rate transmission, so the signal has the high error rate. The present modulation and demodulation method of DSRC system can not expect sufficient for providing data service over 1 Mbps, so the channel equalization and advanced modulation and demodulation methods are required. OFDM method is generally Inon as an effective technique for high data rate transmission system, since it can prevent ISI by inserting a guard interval. However, a guard interval longer than channel delay spread has to be used in each OFDM symbol period, thus resulting a considerable loss in the efficiency of channel utilization. Therefore the equalizer is necessary to cancel ISI to accommodate advanced ISI service with higher bit rate and longer channel delay spread condition. In this thesis, the channel equalizer for the OFDM-DSRC system was designed and its performance in a multi-path fading environment was evaluated with computer simulation. As a result, the performance of Pseudo LMMSE equalizer for the OFDM-DSRC has been improved comparing with LS equalizer at higher bit rate transmission system.

  • VBR compressed, pre-recorded video is known to exhibit significant, multiple time-scale bit rate variability. To reduce the variability and burstiness of the aggregated transmission rate as low as possible, in this paper, we present an adaptive bandwidth smoothing algorithm, that can be effectively applicalble for VoD services over a shared-medium channel. For these environments where many clients are connected to a single server, by introducing the conventional MVBA(minimum variability bandwidth allocation) algorithm and controlling adaptively the conventional MVBA(minimum variability bandwidth asllocation) algorithm and controlling adaptively the aggregated transmission rate whenever a new clients request is arrived at the server side, the proposed algorithm effectively reduces the burstiness and variability of the aggregated transmission rate. Through computer experiments, it is shown that the proposed method perporms better than the convertional non-aggregated bandwidth smoothing schemes in terms of the peak rate, standard deviation, number of rate changes for the aggregated traffic.

  • This paper investigates the performance of IEEE 802.11p wireless access in vehicular environments (WAVE) system in small-scale fading models reported by Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech). We redesign the small-scale fading models to be applied to the computer simulation and develop the IEEE 802.11p WAVE physical layer simulator to provide the bit error rate and packet error rate performances. Moreover, a new channel estimator using decision directed channel estimation and linear minimum mean square error smoothing is proposed in order to improve the performance of the conventional least square channel estimator using two identical long training symbols. The simulation results are satisfactorily coincident with the scenarios of Georgia Tech report, and the proposed channel estimator significantly outperforms the conventional channel estimator.

  • This paper deals with an inverse modeling of nonminimum phase communication channel utilizing the HOS (High Order Statistics) of the received signal. After the communication channel is separated into the minimum phase and maximum phase components, the inverse modeling is performed independently. The performance superiority is confirmed by monte-carlo computer simulation in comparison with the traditional CMA (Constant Modulus Algorithm) method. By utilizing the proposed algorithm employing the HOS of the received signal, the inverse frequency characteristics of the channel can be obtained withoug transmitted signal in digital communication. This algorithm is required in preprocessing or postprocessing in order to remove the channel effect, and effective in the self adaptive equalizer which can minimize the bit error rate or symbol error rate in the recovry of received signal.

  • To transmit a video bit stream over low bandwith, such as mobile, channels, encoding algorithms for high bit rate like H.263+ are used. In transmitting video bit-streams, packet losses cause severe degradation in image quality. This paper proposes a new algorithm for the recovery of missing or erroneous motion vectors when H.263+ bit-stream is transmitted. Considering that the missing or erroneous motion vectors are closely related with those of neighboring blocks, this paper proposes a temporal-spatial error concealment algorithm. The proposed approach is that missing or erroneous Motion Vectors(MVs) are recovered by clustering the movements of neighboring blocks by their homogeneity. MVs of neighboring blocks we clustered according to ALA(Average Linkage Algorithm) clustering and a representative value for each cluster is determined to obtain the candidate MV set. By computing the distortion of the candidates, a MV with the minimum distortion is selected. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm exhibits better performance in subjective and objective evaluation than existing methods.
