  • This paper presents an algorithm, which is based on Otsu's method, for accurate and robust endpoint detection for speech recognition under noisy environments. The features are extracted in time domain, and then an optimal threshold is selected by minimizing the discriminant criterion, so as to maximize the separability of the speech part and environment part. The simulation results show that the method play a good performance in detection accuracy.

  • This paper presents a compensation method for discrete-time control systems with saturation nonlinearities to cope with the reset windup phenomena. The proposed ARW (Anti-Reset Windup) method is motivated by the concept of the equilibrium point. The design parameter of the ARW scheme is explicitly derived by minimizing a reasonable performance index. The resulting dynamics of the compensated controller exhibits the reduced model form of the unsaturated system which can be obtained by the singular perturbational model reduction method. An example is given to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

  • The purpose of this paper is to propose a numerical algorithm for the problem of coefficient identification of the scalar wave equation based on a local observation on the boundary: Determine the unknown coefficient function with the knowledge of simultaneous Dirichlet and Neumann boundary values on a part of boundary. To find the unknown coefficient function, the unknown Neumann boundary value is also identified. We recast our inverse problem to variational problem. The gradient method is applied to find the minimizing functions. We confirm the effectiveness of our algorithm by numerical experiments.

  • This paper deals with the computer method of finding the minimal sum of products for a switching function by using the MASK method derived from the characteristics of the Boolean algebra. The experiments with the program which is dissimilar to the previous computer programs show that the algorithm presented will be more efficient.

  • This paper proposes a method for designing the inductor to minimize power loss for boost converter. The proposed inductor design method uses genetic algorithm to find an optimal inductance and an optimal frequency which minimize the power loss at rated power. The validity of proposed inductor design method is verified by simulation and experiment.

  • The hydraulic cylinder is used for actuating a sluice gate which controls the volume of water in the reservoir. Generally, the one cylinder type is used to operate the sluice gate. In order to reduce the required cylinder force to operate the sluice gate significantly, the sequentially operated-hydraulic cylinders type is designed and the optimal locating points of cylinders are searched using the complex method that is one kind of constrained direct search method.

  • The uncapacitated facility location problem considered here is to determine facility location sites, minimizing the total cost of establishing facilities and serving customer demand points which require primary and back-up services. To solve this problem effectively, we propose two things in this study. First, we propose an idea of Benders' decomposition approach as a solution method of the problem. Second, we implement the problem on GAMS. Using GAMS (general Algebraic Modeling System) can utilize an mixed-integer programming solver such as ZOOM/XMP and provide a completely general automated implementation with a proposed solution method.

  • We present a novel deblurring algorithm for bi-level images blurred by some parameterizable point spread function. The proposed method iteratively searches unknown parameters in the point spread function and noise-to-signal ratio by minimizing an objective function that is based on the binariness and the difference between two intensity values of restoring image. In simulations and experiments, the proposed method showed improved performance compared with the Wiener filtering based method in terms of bit error rate after segmentation.

  • Two-dimensional cutting stock problem is to find a waste-minimizing method of cutting a single rectangular plane into a number of smaller pieces of known dimensions. In practice, besides wastes, setup cost taken during adjusting is of an important concern. We suggest 2-phased guillotine cutting method as a solution to the problem which minimize wastes and setup costs. Also, in order to reduce the computing time we apply techniques of discretization, cutoff, median. Experimental results show good performance of our algorithm.

  • This paper describes a method to design a guaranteed cost controller for a system with uncertain parameters. The design procedure consists of defining an arbitrary function which satisfies certain condition and minimizing it over the control input. When the method is applied to a class kof linear systems with uncertain parameters, a Riccati equation with additional terms results. A simple example is presented to illustrate the usefulness of this method.
