Detection of Second-Layer Corrosion in Aging Aircraft Fuselage

  • A Digital X-ray imaging system using Compton backscattering has been developed to obtain a cross-sectional profile and mass loss of corroded lap-splices of aging aircraft from density variation. A slit-type camera was designed to focus on a small scattering volume inside the material, from which the backscattered photons are collected by a collimated scintillator detector for interpretation of material characteristics. The cross section of the lap-joint is scanned by moving the scattering volume through the thickness direction of the specimen. The mass loss of each layer has been estimated from a Compton backscatter A-scan to obtain the thickness of each layer including the aluminum sheet, the corrosion layer and the sealant. Quantitative information such as location and width of planar corrosion in the lap splices of fuselages is obtained by deconvolution using a nonlinear least-square error minimization method(BFGS method): A simple reconstruction model is also introduced to overcome distortion of the Compton backscatter data due to attenuation effects attributed to beam hardening and quantum noise.

  • Present paper aims at the correlation of modal characteristics of folding fin between test and analysis using an optimization theory. Folding fin is composed of a movable fin, a base fin, and many functional components related to the folding mechanism. Joint parts of folding fin in FEM are initially modeled as rigid elements resulting some difference between test and analysis in modal characteristics. Therefore, some equivalent springs representing joint parts are introduced to improve the FEM model. The springs were set as design variables, while the frequency difference between test and analysis was set as the object function. Bayesian procedure was ujsed for the minimization.

  • In this paper, a reliability sampling plan under progressively type-1 interval censoring is proposed when the lifetime of products follows the Pareto distribution of second kind. We use the maximum likelihood estimator for the median life and its asymptotic distribution. The cost model is proposed and the design parameters are determined such that the given producer's and the consumer's risks are satisfied. Tables are given and the results are explained with examples.

  • Omni-directional mobile robots have been popularly employed in several application areas. However, the kinematics for these systems have not been clearly identified, specially for redundantly actuated case which is common in omni-directional mobile robot such as the Nomadic model. For such mobile robot systems, exploitation of redundant actuation as well as singularity analysis has not been extensively addressed. In light of this fact, this paper introduces two different kinematic approaches for omni-directional mobile robots. Then, a singular-free load distribution scheme for redundantly actuated three-wheeled omni-directional mobile robot is proposed. Through simulation, several advantages of redundantly actuated mobile robot in aspect of singularity avoidance, minimization of torque norm, and exploiting several subtasks are presented.

  • This paper deals with an automatic optimum design based on capacity for a synchronous reluctance motor (SynRM). The focus of this paper is the design relative to the output power on the basis of rotor shape of a SynRM in each capacity. And optimization algorithm is used by means of sequential unconstrained minimization technique(SUMT). The coupled Finite Elements Analysis (FEA) & Preisach model have been used to evaluate nonlinear solutions. The proposed procedure allows to define the rotor geometric dimensions according to capacity starting from an existing motor or a preliminary design.

The Bandwidth from the Density Power Divergence

  • The most widely used optimal bandwidth is known to minimize the mean integrated squared error(MISE) of a kernel density estimator from a true density. In this article proposes, we propose a bandwidth which asymptotically minimizes the mean integrated density power divergence(MIDPD) between a true density and a corresponding kernel density estimator. An approximated form of the mean integrated density power divergence is derived and a bandwidth is obtained as a product of minimization based on the approximated form. The resulting bandwidth resembles the optimal bandwidth by Parzen (1962), but it reflects the nature of a model density more than the existing optimal bandwidths. We have one more choice of an optimal bandwidth with a firm theoretical background; in addition, an empirical study we show that the bandwidth from the mean integrated density power divergence can produce a density estimator fitting a sample better than the bandwidth from the mean integrated squared error.

  • The $CO_2$ emission can be decreased due to freedom of generator maintenance scheduling(GMS). This paper proposes assessment of $CO_2$ emission considering generator maintenance scheduling(GMS) and evaluates effect of the GMS on $CO_2$ emission. And also, this paper assesses the $CO_2$ emission and the probabilistic production cost simulation of nuclear and thermal power generators considering operation of hydro and pumped generator. The minimum reliability criterion level satisfied production cost minimization function model is used in this paper. The practicality and effectiveness of the proposed approach are demonstrated by simulation studies for a real size power system in Korea in 2010.

  • A new technique using a search method which is based on fuzzy multi-criteria function is proposed for GMS(generator maintenance scheduling) in order to consider multi-objective function. Not only minimization of probabilistic production cost but also maximization of system reliability level are considered for fuzzy multi-criteria function. To obtain an optimal solution for generator maintenance scheduling under fuzzy environment, fuzzy multi-criteria relaxation method(fuzzy search method) is used. The practicality and effectiveness of the proposed approach are demonstrated by simulation studies for a real size power system model in Korea in 2010.

Prediction of concrete strength using serial functional network model

  • The aim of this paper is to develop the ISCOSTFUN (Intelligent System for Prediction of Concrete Strength by Functional Networks) in order to provide in-place strength information of the concrete to facilitate concrete from removal and scheduling for construction. For this purpose, the system is developed using Functional Network (FN) by learning functions instead of weights as in Artificial Neural Networks (ANN). In serial functional network, the functions are trained from enough input-output data and the input for one functional network is the output of the other functional network. Using ISCOSTFUN it is possible to predict early strength as well as 7-day and 28-day strength of concrete. Altogether seven functional networks are used for prediction of strength development. This study shows that ISCOSTFUN using functional network is very efficient for predicting the compressive strength development of concrete and it takes less computer time as compared to well known Back Propagation Neural Network (BPN).

  • This paper presents an algorithm for Optimal Reactive Power Dispatch(ORPD) problem based on genetic algorithm. Optimal reactive power dispatch is particularized to the minimization of transmission line losses by suitable selection of generator reactive power outputs and transformer tap settings. To reduce system loss and improve voltage profile, two methods, Loss Re-Distribution Algorithm (LRDA) and Voltage Dependent Load Model (VDLM), are applied to ORPD. The proposed methods have been evaluated on the IEEE 30 bus system. Each of results have been compared with result of load flow.
