  • This paper presents a design of special hardware developed for enhancing the floating-point power operations which are actively used at the lighting stage to calculate the specular term in 3D graphics geometry engines. The power operation takes just 4 cycles in our floating-point multiplier while it takes about 100-200 cycles in conventional floating-point units. Although an approximation algorithm is employed in the power operation to reduce the hardware complexity required, the error of power value from the developed floatingpoint multiplier is so minimal that no difference can be found by human eyes.

  • Various surgical procedures have been described for treating osmidrosis axillare. Elimination of the apocrine glands is prime goal. Optimal operative procedure is characterized as follows: minimal axillary scar(which has cosmetic merits), less complications such as hematoma and seroma, short and less painful recuperating period, minimal damage to the skin and low recurrence rate. Three types of incision technique in subdermal shaving method have beeb commoly used. First, single incision method has an advantage of minimal scarring but more recurrence due to incomplete removal of apocrine glands may occur. Second, double incision technique(Bipedicled flap) has advantages of complete excision, low recurrence rate and relatively minimal scarring, but it could cause frequent necrosis of skin and folding of skin flap. Skoog's method is the third method, which makes four flaps by offset cruciate incisions. It is a better technique in aspect of complete excision of apocrine glands and low recurrence rate but has disadvantages such as development of hypertrophic scar or scar contracture in the line that lies perpendicular to natural axillary skin crease. We used a modified procedure which has shorter length in vertical and transverse incision compared with the classic Skoog's method. We dissected further subcutaneous tissue through the diamond-shaped incision and utilize wide operation field that provide adequate excision of subdermal tissue and proper hemostasis. Between 1999 and 2004, we operated 160 osmidrosis axillare in 80 patients in this technique. Most patients obtained satisfactory result with very low complications. Hematoma or seroma 3.1% Infection 0.6% Partial wound disruption 10% Recurrence 1.2%. Modified Skoog's method for treating osmidrosis axillae could be a optimal technique providing wide operation field for adequate excision of apocrine glands and proper hemostasis and leaving relatively inconspicuous scar and low incidence of scar contracture.

  • Various sorts of dental devices for the dental treatment have been introduced and adopted during past several years. Dental Laser, among all devices, seems to be possible for applying to over the whole treatments and widely employed. Furthermore, this article is to introduce that Dental Laser is intended to care patients secured with the effectual treatment against Conventional procedures based upon its studies. The advantages of Dental Laser treatment-along with LLLT (Low Level Laser Therapy) effect, biostimulation effect, and minimal invasive technique - make the patients reduce their fear of the operation, lighten the inconvenience of post operation, and shorten the treatment period. In particular, it is worth considering that the use of laser-assisted therapies is associated with a marked reduction in the use of analgesics and anti-inflammatory medications compared with conventional procedures. This article is to state advantages and differences of Dental Laser treatment compared with Conventional procedures, and to emphasize to become well-acquainted with the precautions for safety and effective Dental Laser treatment. In case of operating Dental Laser with lack of the instructions, it will cause the unpredicted fatal results; therefore this treatment requires special care in its operation. Henceforward, it is anticipated that infinite treatment protocols will be introduced by applying Dental Laser, and this is to address the utilization of Dental Laser.

  • Due to reduced device sizes and threshold voltages, leakage current becomes an important issue in CMOS design. In a CMOS combinational logic circuit, the leakage current in the standby state depends on the state of the inputs and thus can be minimized by applying an optimal input when the circuit is idling. In this paper, we present a New Input Vector Control algorithm, called Leakage Minimization by Input vector Control (LMIC) for minimal leakage power. This algorithm finds the minimal leakage vector and reduces leakage current up to 22.% on the average, for TSMC 0.18um process parameters. Minimal leakage vectors are very useful in reducing leakage currents in standby mode of operation.

  • In this paper, we consider a new preventive replacement policy for the system which deteriorates while it is in operation with an increasing failure rate. The system is subject to two types of failure. A type 1 failure is repairable while a type 2 failure is not repairable. In the new policy, a system is replaced at the age of $t_p$ or at the instant the$\textsc{k}^{th}$ type 1 failure occurs, whichever comes first. However, if a type 2 failure occurs before a preventive replacement is performed, a failure replacement should be made. We assume that a type 1 failure can be rectified with a minimal repair. We also assume that a replacement takes a non-negligible amount of time while a minimal repair takes a negligible amount of time. Under a cost structure which includes a preventive replacement cost, a failure replacement cost and a minimal repair cost, we develop a model to find the optimal ($\textsc{k},t_p$) policy which minimizes the expected cost per unit time in the long run while satisfying a system availability constraint.

  • Emergency operation plans are indispensable elements for effective process safety management especially when unanticipated events occur under extreme situations. In the paper, a synthesis framework is proposed for the integration success path planning and performance analysis. Within the synthesis framework, success path planning is implemented through flow-directed signal tracing, renaming and reconstruction from a complete collection of Minimal Path Sets (MPSs) that are obtained using graph traversal search on GO-FLOW model diagram. The performance of success paths is then evaluated and prioritized according to the task complexity and probability calculation of MPSs for optimum action plans identification. Finally, an Auxiliary Feed Water System of Pressurized Water Reactor (PWR-AFWS) is taken as an example system to demonstrate the flow-directed MPSs search method for success path planning and performance analysis. It is concluded that the synthesis framework is capable of providing procedural guidance for emergency response and safety management with optimal success path planning under extreme situations.

  • Although there are many kinds of advanced ballast water management systems, pioneering studies for ballast-water free ship and minimal ballast water ship concepts are in progress. In this study, the existing alternatives of ballast water are reviewed and a new design concept is studied on the basis of the existing bulk carrier hull form. To develop a new design alternative which has minimal ballast for ballast water discharge free operation, the new concept should have technical feasibilities that are related to the role of the ballast water, berth access, loading constraints, etc. For this purpose, a simplified systems engineering basis design approach is adopted using a business model as the system analysis and control tool. To check the performance feasibility of the new concept, ship resistance performance is reviewed based on a model scale ship resistance performance analysis.

  • We reported a successful right pneumonectomy using video assisted thoracoscopy for endobronchial tuberculosis. Thoracoscopic surgery has many advantages in spite of its technical difficulties. These advantages include good cosmetic effects, short hospital stay, decreased postoperative morbidity, and good postoperative pulmonary function. The patient was young unmarried female, and her right lung was nearly total obstructed by endobronchial tuberculous dissemination and secondary pulmonary infection. The procedure was a little complicated by inadequate placements of the thoracoscopic ports and 5cm length utility thoracotomy incision. Minimal pain killer was needed only two days after operation and scar of operative wound was very satisfying. Postoperative course was unusual and the patient was discharged 7 days after operation.

  • The decomposition of a structuring element for a morphological operation reduces the amount of the computation required for executing the operation. In this paper, we present a new technique for the decomposition of convex structuring elements for morphological operations. We formulated the linear constraints for the decomposition of a convex polygon in discrete space, then the constraints are applied to the decomposition of a convex structuring element. Also, a cost function is introduced to represent the optimal criteria for decomposition. We use linear integer programming technique to find the combination of basis structuring elements which minimizes the amount of the computation required for executing the morphological operation. Formulating different cost functions for different implementation methods and computer architectures, we can determine the optimal decompositions which guarantee the minimal amounts of computation on different computing environment.

  • In this paper, the fuel economy of plug-in type hybrid electric vehicle is investigated through simulation. For the simulation study, 2 shaft type parallel hybrid powertrain is chosen and its operation modes are described. The operation algorithm which yields operation points of minimal fuel cost is suggested. Dynamic model fur operation of HEV and simulation procedure is described. Simulation results of fuel economy is compared to non plug-in type HEV as well as conventional vehicle. With total driving distance of 37km and full usage of 2kwh of electric energy stored in battery pack, plug-in type HEV shows 28-30% improved fuel economy compared to non plug-in type HEV and 86-93% improved fuel economy compared to conventional vehicle.
