  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the applicability of tailing in the ${\bigcirc}{\bigcirc}$ mine as a grout material. For the purpose, XRD analysis was performed for mineralogical properties of tailing. In addition, flow, velocity, and uniaxial compressive strength tests were carried out for physical and mechanical properties of a grout material with the mixing ratio of cement and tailing and curing periods. By the result of XRD analysis, tailing of the mine was found to mostly consist of quartz, galena, and pyrite. The flow observed by the flow test showed decreasing tendency with increasing the mixing ratio of tailing. The velocity was also lowered with increasing the mixing ratio of tailing regardless of curing periods. The uniaxial compressive strength as well as Young's modulus also show a tendency to decrease with increasing the mixing ratio of tailing independently on the curing periods. Considering only the physical and mechanical properties of a grout material with tailing, the results are considered to be sufficiently used as a grout material. However, since metallic minerals such as galena and pyrite in tailing contents and these are causing environmental contamination, countermeasures should be considered for this problem in future.

  • This study is carried out experiments on various factors for improving the grade of low grade scheelite by Knelson concentrator prior to the main beneficiation process. Even though there are several gravity separators such as Jig, Spirals and etc. for rougher concentrate, the KC3 Knelson Concentrator was adopted to get better separation efficiency and beneficiating effects for pre-concentration of the low grade scheelite ore. The feed samples was prepared to minus 1mm in size by crushing and grinding. The important factors in the KC3 Knelson Concentrator test were examined in terms of the variations such as number of treatment, feed rate, rotation speed of bowl(G force), water flow rate, pre-removal of magnetic minerals, feed size and feed grade. According to the result of experiment, it shows that the important technical variations are limited in terms of number of treatment, feed rate, feed size and feed grade. The final result shows that the KC3 Knelson Concentrator obtains the scheelite pre-concentrate of about $3%WO_3$ grade and 90% recovery, respectively, from the feed containing about $0.8-1.0%WO_3$ grade.

  • In this study, an accelerated carbonation process was applied to stabilize hazardous heavy metals of industrial solid waste incineration (ISWI) bottom ash and fly ash, and to reduce $CO_2$ emissions. The most commonly used method to stabilize heavy metals is accelerated carbonation using a high water-to-solid ratio including oxidation and carbonation reactions as well as neutralization of the pH, dissolution, and precipitation and sorption. This process has been recognized as having a significant effect on the leaching of heavy metals in alkaline materials such as ISWI ash. The accelerated carbonation process with $CO_2$ absorption was investigated to confirm the leaching behavior of heavy metals contained in ISWI ash including fly and bottom ash. Only the temperature of the chamber at atmospheric pressure was varied and the $CO_2$ concentration was kept constant at 99% while the water-to-solid ratio (L/S) was set at 0.3 and $3.0dm^3/kg$. In the result, the concentration of leached heavy metals and pH value decreased with increasing carbonation reaction time whereas the bottom ash showed no effect. The mechanism of heavy metal-stabilization is supported by two findings during the carbonation reaction. First, the carbonation reaction is sufficient to decrease the pH and to form an insoluble heavy metal-material that contributes to a reduction of the leaching. Second, the adsorbent compound in the bottom ash controls the leaching of heavy metals; the calcite formed by the carbonation reaction has high affinity of heavy metals. In addition, approximately 5 kg/ton and 27 kg/ton $CO_2$ were sequestrated in ISWI bottom ash and fly ash after the carbonation reaction, respectively.

  • For 21 rock samples consisting of granite, sandstone and the effective thermal conductivity (TC) was measured with the LFA-447 Nanoflash, and mineralogical compositions were also determined from XRD analysis. The structural models were used to examine the effects of quartz content and the size of minerals on TC of rocks. The experimental results showed that TC of rocks was strongly related to quartz content with $R^2$ value of 0.75. Therefore, the proposed regression model can be a useful tool for an approximate estimation of TC only from quartz content. Some samples with similar values of quartz content, however, illustrated great differences in TC, presumably caused by differences in the size of minerals. An analysis from structural models showed that TC of rocks with fine-grained minerals was likely to fall in the region between Series and EMT model, and it moved up to ME and Parallel model as the size of minerals increased. This progressive change of structural models implies that change of TC depending on the size of minerals is possibly related to the scale of experiments; TC was measured from a disk sample with a thickness of 3 mm. Therefore, in case of measurements with a thin sample, TC can be overestimated as compared to the real value in the field scale. The experimental data illustrated that the scale effect was more pronounced for rocks with bigger size of minerals. Thus, it is worthwhile to remember that using a measured TC as a representative value for the real field can be misleading when applied to many geothermal problems.

  • The pupose of this study was to identify the material characteristics, firing environments and making techniques for the jar coffins from the Oryangdong kiln site and the Ungokdong tomb site in Naju. All jar coffins had very similar physical, mineralogical and geochemical characteristics, although it was excavated from the different sites. The wall thickness of the jar coffins was about 2.3 to 5.3 cm. Under the microscopy, the jar coffins include a large quantity of various quartz with some microcrystalline and showed partly orthoclase and biotite. It is presumed that the mineral sherds added to maintain the thick wall and to control the percentage of contraction during drying and firing of jar coffins and it has contained about 11.4 to 19.8 %. Firing temperature of the jar coffins is estimated as 1,000 to $1,150^{\circ}C$. Also, all jar coffins and soils show similar geochemical behavior of elements and clay-mineralization degree within the site. This indicates making that the soil is probable to be a raw material of the jar coffins. But it shows different characteristics in major elements of soils which is collected at the kiln floor and the trench region of the Oryangdong kiln site because of the lack of quartz and feldspar in the soils. Therefore, it can use of the jar coffins making clay, if it goes through a simple special process such as mixing temper.

  • The mechanism of stone exfoliation and its cause in relation to chemical weathering by soluble salt were studied. Chemical, mineralogical and physical analysis was performed in exfoliation samples from stone monuments. The representative salt is gypsum in the exfoliation samples. In order to understand the salt reaction, stone samples(tuff and granite) were treated with two type of the salt, gypsum and sodium sulfate, which have different solubility. The capillary water uptakes are slight increased in impregnated with Na2SO4 and weathering simulation of two rock types. It means that the rock is deteriorated in the near of the surface by $Na_2SO_4$. $CaSO_4{\cdot}2H_2O$ bring out the thicker exfoliation than $Na_2SO_4$ because it is penetrated into the deeper zone and amount of accumulated salt is more abundant in the inner part than in the near of the surface. The exfoliation was formed in the tuff by salt treatment and 30cycle of weathering simulation, but there are not significant symptoms of exfoliation in the granite by same condition. This result was caused by the different capillary water uptakes and porosity of the rocks. In the tuff, salt solutions are penetrated into the inner part due to its high capillary water uptakes and porosity but the granite, which has low value relatively, can be formed thinner exfoliation.

  • The present paper is a part of a study aimed at gaining information on the origin, mode of deposition, and characteristics of volcanic soils in Jeju. Volcanic activity of Jeju island has extremely influenced on the formation of various soils. Polysequum phenomenon of soils is one of outstanding soil genesis in Jeju. The typical polysequum soils was collected and analyzed by morphological, physico-chemical, mineralogical and micromorphological approaches The results are as follows: 1. The soils consists of polysequa, A and B horizons from volcanic ashes, unconsolidated volcanic sand layer and B(I) horizons from residual basalts. 2. The lithological discontinuity is also very distinct; silt loam from volcanic ashes, sand (II) from volcanic sand and clayey (III) from basalts. 3. Volcanic sand layer seems to be influenced by lava flow. The properties of it are similar to volcanic ashes rather than beneath residuum in micromorphological aspects. In micromorphological, this layer is gradually changed into soils. 4. Dominant clay minerals are allophane in A and B horizons from volcanic ashes and kaoline, vermiculite and illite from residual basalts. 5. The soils are not developed. There is no formation of argillic horizon in subsurface layers.

  • The purpose of this study is to quantitatively estimate the settling property for fine-cohesive sediments in Keum Estuary and to evaluate the spatial variation by analyzing and comparing the local and seasonal variation of the settling properties in Keum Estuary with that of the settling properties in the other sites. After the spatial variation of physico-chemical properties such grain size distribution, the percentage of organic contents, mineralogical composition etc is investigated through experiments and analyses, interrelation between the physico-chemical properties and settling velocities and effect that the physico-chemical properties have on the quantitative variation of settling velocities were also analyzed in this study. Experimental results of settling tests shows that settling velocities of Keum Estuary mud vary in the range of two orders of magnitude (from 0.01 to 1mm/sec) over the corresponding concentration range of 0.1 to 80 g/L, and a feature of settling velocity profile is quite different in quantity as compared to those of previous studies with mud of other regions: Saemankuem, Tampa Bay, Sevem Estuary and lake Okeechobee. However, their local and seasonal variabilities within Keum Estuary appear to be insignificant.

  • The ores of the Bobae mine are mainly composed of sericite and quartz, and with appreciable amount of some other minerals such as andalusite. pyrophyllite, and albite, etc.. Sericite occurs in various a1teration zones having different crystal size and habit. Sericites can be c1assified into two types based on the crystal size; fine-grained and coarse-grained sericite. Fine-grained sericite occurs as an aggregate. Mineralogical characterizations of both types of sericites have been studied with various methods. Lattice parameters of two types of sericites occurred in various alteration zones are almost identical. but b parameter of coarse-grained sericite appears to be slight1y bigger than that of fine-grained aggregates. Average structural formula of fine- and coarse-grained sericite is $K_{1.44}Al_{3.86}(Si_{6.35}Al_{1.65})O_{20}(OH)_4$ and $K_{1.71}Al_{3.82}(Si_{6.20}Al_{1.80})O_{20}(OH)_4$, respectively. Structural formulae of coarse-grained sericites are close to that of muscovite. Infrared spectra show that there is slight distinction between sericites occurred in andalusite-pyrophyllite zone and other subzones. IR spectra of sericites due to Si-O vibration ($540{\sim}530cm^{-1}$) tend to shift to smaller wavenumber side from center to outer alteration zone. All samples have litt1e or no interstratified minerals. and this is demonstrated by Ir and DTA-TG results. It indicates that the Bobae mine is formed at relatively high temperature. That the ratio of quartz to sericite in ores varies greatly indicates that several discontinuous hydrothermal alteration processes have been involved.
