High performance concrete mixes are selected and corresponding test specimens are made for the study of chloride diffusion coefficient at reference time. The concrete mixes were same designs as those used in construction of bridges located in a marine environment. Mix design variables included binder type, water-to-binder ratio, mineral admixtures to total binder weight substitution ratio, fine aggregate source, chemical water reducer admixture type for high strength and high flowability, and target slump or slump flow. The test results showed that the diffusion coefficients at reference time varied significantly according to the type of mineral admixtures and their substitution ratios. A model for diffusion coefficient at reference time considering the type of mineral admixture and the substitution ratio was developed. Diffusion coefficients from the developed model were compared with those from literature review, a previous model, and additional test results. All of the comparisons verified that the developed model can reasonably predict diffusion coefficients and the application of the model to the durability design against chloride penetration is appropriate.
A huge number of greenhouse soils in Korea have accumulated mineral elements which induce many nutritional and pathological problems. The present study was performed to the effects of the reduced fertilization on plant growth, and uptake and partitioning of minerals (N, P, K) and soluble carbohydrates using highly minerals-accumulated farmer's greenhouse soil. On the basis of the recommended application for tomato crop, the application rates of N, P and K were 110(50%)-5.2(5%)-41.5(35%)kg $ha^{-1}$, respectively, using Hoagland's nutrient solution. Tomato growth rates during the whole experiment were not significant between treatments, but it was found that a decrease in daily growth represented after 60 days of treatment (DAT). The reduced application led to a drastic decrease in the concentration of N, P and K in fruits, and, thus, this resulted in lower uptake after 40 DAT. The lower phloem export and utilization of soluble carbohydrates caused an accumulation of extra-carbohydrates in leaves, stems and fruits in the reduced application. The reduced fertilization induced the capture of N, P and K in leaves and of soluble carbohydrates in stems compared to the conventional application. In this study, we suggest that it is possible to delay the first fertigation time in minerals-accumulated soils without an adverse impact on crop growth, but it is necessary to regularly monitor mineral status in soil to ensure a balanced uptake, synthesis and partitioning of minerals and carbohydrates.

Managed aquifer recharge (MAR) is a promising water management strategy for securing stable water resources to overcome water shortage and water quality deterioration caused by global environmental changes. A MAR demonstration site was selected at Imgok-ri, Sangju-si, Korea, based on screening for the frequency of drought events and local water supply situations. The abundant groundwater discharging from a nearby abandoned coal mine is one of the potential recharge water sources for the MAR implementation. However, it has elevated levels of arsenic (~12 ㎍/L). In this study, the potential of the natural attenuation of arsenic by the field geological media was investigated using batch and column experiments. The adsorption and desorption parameters were obtained for two drill core samples (GM1; 21.8~22.8 m and GM2; 26.0~27.8 m depth) recovered from the potentially water-conducting fracture-zones in the injection well. The effluent arsenic concentrations were monitored during the continuous flow of the mine drainage water through the columns packed with the core samples. GM2 removed about 60% of arsenic in the influent (0.1 mg-As/L) while GM1 removed about 20%. The results suggest that natural attenuation is an acitive process occurring during the MAR operation, potentially lowering the arsenic level in the mine drainage water below the regulatory standard for drinking water. This study hence demonstrates that using the mine drainage water as the recharge water source is a viable option at the MAR demonstration site.

The main purpose of this study is to identify the shallow gas origin in the KSSM zone. Based on the results of gas composition and isotope in the headsapace gas, the shallow gas is mainly composed of methane and carbon and deuterium isotopes (${\delta}^{13}CCH_4$ and ${\delta}DCH_4$) of methane has ranged from -93.4%o to -70.9%, and from -228%o to -199%o in each. These results imply that shallow gas has predominately biogenic source by $CO_2$ reduction rather than thermogenic. The carbon isotopic separation (${\varepsilon}_c$) between methane and carbon dioxide $(CO_2)$ has a range of 54.4 to 72.2, it also supports biogenic origin of shallow gas.

Biomass, a carbon-neutral resource, is an alternative energy source for exhaustion of fossil fuel and environmental problems. Most of energy production systems using biomass operate with a thermal chemical conversion method. Amongst them, gasification generates syngas and applies to boilers or engines for the production of heat and electricity. However, Tar could be formed during the production of syngas and it is condensed at low temperature which may cause to clog the pipelines and combustion chamber, ultimately resulting in decrease of process efficiency. Thus this work utilized water and oily materials such as soybean oil, waste cooking oil and mineral oil for scrubbing liquid. The removal efficiency of Tar appeared 97%, 70%, 63% and 30% for soybean oil, waste cooking oil, mineral oil and water respectively.
Eight feeds and their residues left after washing with tap water (water residue) or incubation in the rumen (rumen residues) were treated with hydrochloric acid, neutral detergent solution without EDTA (NDS) or both, and the release or sorption of minerals (Ca, Mg, P, Na, K, Cu and Zn) assessed. Six of the feeds were from Sri Lanka (Panicum maximum ecotype Guinea A, Glyricidia maculate, Artocarpus heterophyllus (jak leaves), untreated and urea-treated rice straw, and rice bran) and two from the Netherlands (maize silage and wheat straw). The initial concentration of mineral elements, the concentration of neutral detergent fibre (NDF) and the type of feed significantly influenced (p<0.01). The proportion of the mineral elements released or sorbed. In general, feeds with high NDF content (straws and guinea grass) sorbed Ca from tap water, or released less in the rumen, and within these feeds the extent of sorption varied with source of fibre. Acid or NDS treatment removed little of the sorbed Ca, but they removed much of the Mg from both water and rumen residues. Fibres of wheat straw and jak leaves showed an affinity for Mg in the rumen. All feeds and their water and rumen residues sorbed P and Na from NDS, and the extent of sorption varied with the initial concentrations of these elements and with the type of fibre. Acid treatment removed part of the sorbed Na, but not the P. The solubility of K was not affected by the content of NDF, the type of fibre or the initial concentration of K. All feeds and their residues, except for the rumen residues of rice bran sorbed Cu from tap water and in the rumen. The recovery of Cu in rumen residues declined from 353% to 147% after NDS treatment, and with some feeds (glyricidia and jak leaves) the recovery was below 100%. Acid treatment removed part of the Zn sorbed by the water and rumen residues, but the capacity of residues to retain Zn varied with the type of feed.
Miocene basalt plugs in Goseong contain a large variety of crustal and mantle xenoliths and xenocrysts. One of basalt plugs, Unbongsan, are derived from 160 km depth. Whole-rock geochemistry and pressure and temperature conditions of mineral phases indicate that Unbongsan volcanic rocks are alkali basalts and the source magma of the alkali basalts was generated from about $0.2{\sim}2%$ partial melting of depleted garnet peridotite. Crystallization pressures and temperatures of mineral phases within ascending magma of Unbongsan alkali basalt indicate that olivines, clinopyroxenes, and plagioclases were crystallized at $75{\sim}110km,\;40{\sim}52km,\;37{\sim}54km$ depth, respectively. The ascending magma of Unbongsan alkali basalts enclosed mantle xenoliths at about $57{\sim}67km$ depth.
Water levels of thermal groundwater ($>30^{\circ}C$) were recorded from March 2002 to June 2006 at several monitoring wells within the Yuseong spa area. Using these data, we elucidated the long-term cyclic fluctuations of thermal groundwater levels with 1 year period. We also observed a noticeable water level variation with periods of 0.5, 1 and 7 days in most monitoring wells, which indicates relatively good hydraulic connectivity within the main hotspring area. By comparing water level variations among several wells, we found out that E-W and N-S trending geological structures should be an important control factor for emplacement and flow of thermal groundwater in the study area. It may be also inferred that geothermal source is highly associated with the hydraulic connectivity of aquifers at the Yuseong spa area.
Mineral assemblages, mineral chemistries and stable isotope compositions of altered rocks of the Ogmae, Seongsan, Haenam and Gusi mines near the Haenam volcanic field in the southwestern part of the Korea peninsula were studied. Characteristic hydrothermal alteration zones in these deposits occurring in the Cretaceous volcanics and volcanogenic sediments, acidic tuff, and rhyolite, were outlined. Genetic environment with particular reference to the spatial and temporal relationships for these deposits were considered. The alteration zones defined by a mineral assemblage in the Ogmae and Seongsan deposits can be classified as alunite, pyrophyllite, kaolinite or dickite, quartz, illite or illite/smectite. Alunite was not developed in the Gusi and Haenam deposits. Boundaries between the adjacent zones are always gradational except for vein-type alunite. Alteration zones are superimposed upon each other in some localities. These deposits formed $71.8{\pm}2.8{\sim}76.6{\pm}2.9$ Ma ago, which is the almost same age of later volcanic rocks $79.4{\pm}1.7{\sim}82.8{\pm}1.2$ Ma, the Haenam Group, corresponding to Campanian. It indicates that hydrothermal alteration of these deposits appeared to be related to felsic volcanism in the area. Consideration of the stability between kaolinite, alunite, pyrite and pyrophyllite, and the geothermometry based on the mineral chemistry of illite and chlorite suggests that the maximum formation temperature for alunite and pyrophyllite can be estimated at about $250^{\circ}C$ and $240{\sim}290^{\circ}C$, respectively. It also suggests that these deposits were formed by acidic sulfate solution with high aqueous silica and potassium activity in a shallow depth environment. Compositional variation of alunite also suggests that the physico-chemical conditions fluctulated considerably during alteration processes, indicating shallow depth environment. The Haenam deposit was formed at a relatively greater depth than the others. The sulfur isotope composition of alunite and pyrite indicates that sulfur probably had a magmatic source, and the oxygen isotope composition for kaolinite indicates that the magmatic hydrothermal solution was diluted by circulating meteoric water.
In 2006, the coal usage that is used as energy source of power plant will meet 16,000 MW which is 30% of the whole energy usage. A Coal deposits among the fossil fuels is very plentiful in natural resources and has high economical efficiency but application technique is very inconvenient. Also when burned for utilization, it generate various toxic and untoxic air pollution materials; fly ash, bottom ash, sulfurous acid gas etc. In this study, we could establish a preparation of clean coal by triboelectrostatic separation. In this study, we made a bench-scale's triboelectrostatic separation equipment using electrostatic technology, and got an optimum conditions of various factors for increasing recovery rate and purification in separation. A test result, we got a clean coal that recovery rate is 68.10%, rejection rate of ash and sulfur content is 31.23% and 28.33%.
