  • This paper presents an estimation technique of the equivalent circuit parameters for an underwater acoustic piezoelectric transducer from the measured impedance. Estimated equivalent circuit can be used for the design of the impedance matching network of the sonar transmitter. A fitness function is proposed to minimize the error between the calculated impedance of the equivalent circuit and the measured impedance of the transducer. The equivalent circuit parameters are estimated by using the fitness function and the PSO(Particle Swarm Optimization) algorithm. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified by the applications to a sandwich-type transducer and a dummy load. In addition, the impedance matching network is also designed by using the estimated equivalent circuit model.

  • For the major scientific laboratories around the world, nanotechnology has been one of the key scientific issues since the end of the last millenium. The basic materials of this newly emerging technology are nanoparticles, which, in fact, have been used for many centuries. However, the physical properties of the particles were understood quite recently. In order to apply the new properties we have to protect and functionalize the surfaces of the particles, since without protection of the surfaces, nanoparticles grow themselves due to Ostwald Ripening. In this review, the author describes recent technical progress in the field of fuctionalization of various nanoparticles and their applications, so that readers can grasp the overall picture of this new technological field.

  • A compact broadband active composite dipole antenna for direction finding system at the V/UHF-band is presented. It uses the composite structure which improves the antenna gain and the active circuit for broadband operation. This type of antenna has a high gain more than that of one dipole antenna within limited length(1m). The basic design and performance of both antenna structure and integrated active circuit are presented.

  • One of the most significant UUV(Unmanned Underwater Vehicle) applications is MCM(Mine Countermeasure), which makes good use of UUV characteristics to provide covert, rapid, controlled and efficient survey of a potential minefield without risking a human operator. In this paper, a survey of the today's MCM missions where UUVs will play a role, the vehicle systems that are either under development or planned in the future are presented. And examines principal technical challenges and outline new enabling technologies. Particularly, this paper analyses current approaches to tacking these technologies and technological limitation of UUVs as a MCM platform, and research efforts to develop the technology necessary to meet the domestic MCM mission needs.

  • Techniques from decision analysis and expert system have both been extensively used in the development of computerized decision aids, although each discipline uses different approaches in knowledge (information or input) acquisition, representation, and problem solving methodology. From the perspective of many types of practical decision aiding applications, both normative decision aids and expert system technology have significant limitations. Many research efforts have been exerted toward complementing the one's deficiency with the other's possible techniques or vice versa. In this paper, among many possible complementary techniques for better decision aiding between decision analysis and expert system, we focus on the using prescriptive methodology of decision analysis which incorporates user's preference knowledge for conflict resolution in rule based expert system.

  • The goal of this study is to make the government/users decide rationally with regards to the problems of the weapon systems management. Therefore it is necessary to develop how much precisely and through what methods the system should be cost. That costing policies should be determined under the considerations of the estimating expense and the expected benefit due to the applications of cost informations. After that, it must also be decided where the cost informations are used. We can suggest the cost results be used to find the most reasonable system among alternatives, the best producer, the most benevolent policy for user, and so on.

  • Policy-based networking offers a network manager the ability to manage the network in a holistic and dynamic fashion rather than force a network manager to manage the network by dealing with each device individually. Policy-based networking is focusing on users and applications instead of emphasizing devices and interfaces. An important part of the policy-based networking is to simplify the task of administration and management for different disciplines. The Defense Information System(DIS) of today are complex and heterogeneous systems. Operational needs are not a trivial task and Quality of Service(QoS) is not generally guaranteed. So, important data may be missed or congested by trivial data. Policy-based networking provide a way to support QoS and simplify the management of multiple devices deploying complex technologies. This paper suggest implementation of policy-based networking in DIS to improvement of performance, and implementation is progressed step by step. Especially this paper is focusing on the providing QoS with policy-based networking using Lightweight Directory Access Protocol(LDAP) Server.

  • In order to evaluate the credibility of the welded joint design for combat vehicle using A12519, the numerical analysis for the joint model has been studied and the results are compared with the experimental works by the impact projectiles. The numerical approach using LS-DYNA involves the process of the crack initiation and propagation as well as the applications of the failure criteria for both the ductile and brittle failures. The good agreement between the numerical and experimental works are proved.

  • Titanium alloys are vital elements for developing advanced structural components, especially in aerospace applications. However, process design for successful forming of titanium alloys is a difficult task, which has to be achieved within a very narrow range of process parameters. In this paper is a finite element based optimal design technique is presented and applied to volume fraction optimization process design in backward extrusion of titanium alloys.

  • In a naval combat system, the information processing node is a key functional equipment and performs major combat management functions including control sensor and weapon systems. Therefore, a failure of one of the node causes fatal impacts on overall combat system capability. There were many methodologies to enhance system availability by reducing the impact of system failure like a fault tolerant method. This paper proposes a fault tolerant mechanism for information processing node using a replication algorithm with hardware duplication. The mechanism is designed as a generic algorithm and does not require any special hardware. Therefore all applications in combat system can use this functionality. The asynchronous characteristic of this mechanism provides the capability to adapt this algorithm to the module which has low performance hardware.
