  • In this paper, firstly, 'value', 'vertices', 'height' are discussed, which are used in the multiple contexts. Then 'sketch', 'mental math', 'zero point oneth place/zero point zero oneth place/zero point zereo zero oneth place', 'number of place', 'natural number part/decimal part' are discussed, which are not used consistently. Finally, middle school mathematics terms 'distance', 'number line', 'the value of the expression' are discussed which are used in elementary school mathematics textbooks/workbooks. From these discussions, the following four suggestions are proposed as conclusions. First, as a mathematical term 'value' and 'distance' should be emphasized. As 'distance' is a middle school term, there is a need to consider the 'height' as 'the length of the line segment' instead of 'distance'. Second, 'number of place' which can be replaced with other suitable term, 'the value of the expression' including 'value of $20{\times}4$', 'natural number part/decimal part', 'vertex of pyramid/vertex of cone', 'mental math' should not be used. Third, there is a need to consider the use of 'mixed decimal' and 'proper decimal'. In addition, there is a need to expand the use of 'sketch'. Fourth, there is a need to consider the confirmation of 'number line' as an elementary school mathematics term. In addition, there is a need to consider to specify that 'decimal first place', 'decimal second place', 'decimal third place' can be used equivalently with 'zero point oneth place', 'zero point zero oneth place', 'zero point zereo zero oneth place' respectively.

  • In this note we examined some terms, parallel lines and angles in elementary school mathematics and middle school mathematics respectively. Since some terms are represented early in elementary school mathematics and not repeated after, some students are not easy to apply the terms to their lesson. Also, since the relation between parallel lines and angles are treated intuitively in 7-th grade, applying the relation for a proof in 8-th grade would be meaningless. For the variety of mathematics education, it is desirable that the relation between parallel lines and angles are treated as postulate. Also, for out standing students, it is desirable that we use deductive reasoning to prove the relation between parallel lines and angles as a theorem. In particular, the treatments of vertical angles and the relation between parallel lines and angles in 7-th grade text books must be reconsidered. Proof is very important in mathematics, and the deductive reasoning is necessary for proof. It would be efficient if some properties such as congruence of vertical angles and the relation between parallel lines and angles are dealt in 8-th grade for proof.

  • The purpose of the study was to investigate the reality of middle school mathematics teachers' subject matter knowledge for teaching mathematical conjecture and justification. Data in the study were collected through interviewing nine Chinese and ten Korean middle school mathematics teachers. The teachers responded to the question that was designed in the form of a scenario that presents a teaching task related to a geometrical topic. The teachers' oral responses were audiotaped and transcribed, and their written notes were collected. The results of the study were compared to the analysis of American and Chinese elementary and secondary teachers' responses to the same task in Ball (1988) and Ma (1999). The findings of the study suggested that teachers' approaches to explaining and demonstrating a mathematical topic were significantly influenced by their knowledge of learners and knowledge of the curriculum they teach. One of the practical implications of the study is that teachers should recognize the advantages of learning the conceptual structure of a mathematical topic. It allows the teachers to have the flexibility to come up with meaningful mathematical approaches to teaching the topic, which are comprehensible to the learners whatever the grade levels they teach, rather than rule-based algorithms.

  • The purpose of this study is to verify the validity of a creativity measurement tool and to discover the creativity characteristics of creative gifted students by assessing the difference in the creativity characteristics of creative gifted students, who were selected from gifted students in elementary and middle schools through the Torrance Test of Creative Thinking(TTCT), according to school level and the type of the students (gifted student in mathematics, gifted student in science). To this research purpose, creative gifted students were selected by the Torrance Test of Creative Thinking(TTCT) on 594 students, who had applied for super gifted education, from 17 gifted students institutes under the jurisdiction of Jeollabukdo office of education, Then, t-tests and multiple regression analysis were performed to analyze the creativity factors between elementary students and middle school students and between mathematics-gifted students and science-gifted students. From the research, the following results were obtained. Although TTCT is effective in distinguishing gifted students with and without creativity, correlation coefficient values between creativity factors(the correlation coefficients between 'fluency' and 'originality' and between 'fluency' and 'elaboration' were .78 and .50 respectively) suggested the possibility of low uniqueness of creativity factors. In addition, compared with elementary students, middle school students showed significantly lower fluency (circles), elaboration(picture construction, picture completion), and the abstractness of titles(picture structure). In the meantime, science-gifted students displayed significantly higher originality(picture construction), and elaboration(picture construction, picture completion, circles) than mathematics-gifted students. Therefore, continuous study is required to enhance the validity of the test for the selection of creativity gifted students. Besides, efforts should be made to find ways to enhance the creativity of gifted students and to resolve the problem of decreasing creativity with student academic level increasing.

  • Geometric education emphasize reasoning ability and spatial sense through development of logical thinking and intuitions in space. Researches about space understanding go along with investigations of space perception ability which is composed of space relationship, space visualization, space direction etc. Especially space visualization is one of the factors which try conclusion with geometric problem solving. But studies about space visualization are limited to middle school geometric education, studies in elementary level haven't been done until now. Namely, discussions about elementary students' space visualization process and ability in plane or space figures is deficient in relation to geometric problem solving. This paper examines these aspects, especially in relation to plane and space problem solving in elementary levels. Firstly we propose the analysis frame to investigate a visualization process for plane problem solving and a visualization ability for space problem solving. Nextly we select 13 elementary students, and observe closely how a visualization process is progress and how a visualization ability is played role in geometric problem solving. Together with these analyses, we propose concrete examples of visualization ability which make a road to geometric problem solving. Through these analysis, this paper aims at deriving various discussions about visualization in geometric problem solving of the elementary mathematics.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate environmental factors that affect mathematics learning of students in multicultural families. For this study, as study subjects, eight elementary school students and one middle school student, who were born and grew up in multicultural families in Korea due to international marriage of Korean father and foreign mother, and their five mothers were selected. To examine factors affecting mathematics learning and interests of students in multicultural families, relationships with parents, friends, and teachers were surveyed, and mathematics attitude test was performed. After conducting one on one interview based on collected questionnaires and results of the attitude test, qualitative data analysis was performed. As a result of survey and interview, positive factors affecting mathematics learning of students in multicultural families included arousing interest in mathematics through mother's mathematics teaching in her mother language and direct teaching, good peer relation, teacher's compliment and encouragement, and lowering the burden of language in accordance with characteristics of mathematics course.

  • The seventh curriculum put into operation gradually from first-year student in 2000 academic years of elementary school is subject to form and apply a step-wise level curriculum. Mathematics(correspond to junior high school course from 7th school year to 9th school year) should apply a step-wise level curriculum from 7th school year in 2001 academic years. Accordingly, mathematics teachers must diagnose actual conditions of educations, distribution tables of test results, step-wise teaching-studying programs etc. They also make proper plans suitable for actual situations of each school, prepare appropriate teaching materials and aids. I investigated preceding studies planned for preparation of putting into operation of a step-wise level curriculum. It showed that most of the studies were conducted at schools of medium or large scale and studies conducted at schools of small scale was rare. There were 113 small scale middle schools out of total 297 middle schools in Kyongsangbuk-do area in 2000. In this situation, I felt necessities of modeling of a step-wise level curriculum suitable for small scale schools. In this study, I modeled a step-wise level curriculum suitable for small scale middle schools, applied this model to 44 students in M middle school. I modeled two types of curriculum. One is a step-wise level curriculum that execute special supplementation process to students who do not complete 7-가 step successfully. The other is a step-wise level curriculum which is a regular model for a step-wise level of 7-나 step. I carried out an academic achievement test and intimacy test about mathematics before and after the application of the model. In this study, I found out that this model was very effective in academic achievement of students and helpful to declined students in scholarship. In the intimacy test, It was found out that most of the students gained confidence in mathematics, felt less anxiety, formed positive self consciousness. Therefore, I think that this model will be helpful to the application of the seventh step-wise level curriculum.
