The impact of municipal waste disposal of heavy metals on environmental pollution: A case study for Tonekabon, Iran

  • Municipal solid waste disposal is considered as one of the most important risks for environmental contamination which necessitates the development of strategies to reduce destructive consequences on the ecosystem as related especially to heavy metal accumulation. This study investigates heavy metal (i.e., As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb, Zn) accumulation in the Tonekabon region, NW of Iran that is related to city waste disposal and evaluates the environmental impact in the Caspian Sea coastal region. For this purpose, after performing field studies and collecting 50 soil specimens from 5 sites of the study area, geochemical tests (i.e., inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, atomic absorption spectroscopy and x-ray fluorescence) were conducted on the soil specimens collected from the 5 sites (named as Sites A1, A2, A3, A4 and A5) and the results were used to estimate the pollution indices (i.e., geo-accumulation index, normalized enrichment factor, contamination factor, and pollution load index). The obtained indices were utilized to assess the eco-toxicological risk level in the landfill site which indicated that the city has been severely contaminated by Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn. These levels have been developed along the stream towards the nearshore areas indicating uptake of soil degradation. The heavy metal contamination was classified to range from unpolluted to highly polluted, which indicated serious heavy metal pollution in the study area as related to municipal solid waste disposal in Tonekabon.

전북 고창지역 학교 실내외 환경의 중금속 오염 특성 (Contamination Characteristics of Heavy Metals in Indoor, Outdoor and Playground of Schools in the Gochang-Gun, Chonbuk Province of South Korea)

  • 먼지시료는 전라북도 고창군에 있는 10개 중 고등학교에서 채취하였다. 교실 내의 칠판 위, 전등 반사판 위, 게시판 위, 물품장 위에 쌓인 분진 등의 먼지와 창틀 밖 난간 등에 쌓인 먼지시료, 그리고 운동장에서 총 45개의 시료를 채취했다. 채취한 먼지 시료를 Thompson and Wood(1982)의 방법으로 화학처리 한 후 Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn, Mn 등 8개의 원소를 정량 분석했다. 교실 내 먼지 시료 중에 Cd, Cu, Pb, Zn 등의 중금속 함량이 높았다. 또한 교실 외 먼지 시료 중에는 Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn의 함량이 높았다. 먼지 시료 중 Cd(4.6 ppm), Cu(124 ppm), 그리고 Zn(350 ppm) 농도는 세계 평균 지표 토양과 환경오염기준 보다 매우 높다. 이러한 경우는 전주시 중 고등학교의 먼지 시료 분석과 유사하다. 국내 선행연구와 비교했을 때 교실 내 외 환경은 Cu, Zn을 제외하고 농축이 심하다. 운동장 환경은 전주시의 교통량이 많은 주거 도로와 주 도로변, 운동장에 있는 먼지 중의 중금속 함량 보다 낮았다. 운동장 먼지 시료에서 오염지수가 1.0 이상인 중금속 오염은 1개 학교에서 나타났지만 교실 내 외 먼지 시료에서 오염지수가 1.0 이상인 중금속 오염은 7개 학교에서 나타났다. 산업화가 덜 된 농촌 지역의 학교라 할지라도 교실 내에는 중금속의 오염양상이 도시 지역의 학교와 같았다. 이는 교통량의 상대적 차이나 산업화의 정도와 관계없이 실내에서 중금속 오염이 동일하게 일어나고 있음을 보여준다.

동해중부해역에 있어서 부유성 해양 폐기물의 분포와 조성 (A study on the distribution and composition of marine floating debris in the middle part of East Sea, Korea)

  • The distribution and composition of marine floating debris were recorded from a training ship 'Kyeongyang' of Gangwon Provincial University at May 19-29, 2004 and Aug.24-31, 2004. The sampled area is the middle part of East Sea of Korea(the coast of Gangwondo and region of Ulleung island and Tokdo), divided into 27 unit segments on survey areas. Debris fabrication materials were categorized with 6 items using the following; styrofoam, paper & cardboard, net & rope, vinyl & plastic, floating metal & glass, man-made or natural wood. From the investigation on May,2004, total numbers of marine floating debris in the middle part of the East Sea of Korea was 996 individuals. The No. 1 and No. 2 unit segment located at south-west region of Ulleung Island showed higher density than others. The styrofoam and vinyl & plastic accounted for 72.8% of all debris fabrication materials. From the investigation on August, 2004, total numbers of marine floating debris in the coast of the Gangwondo of Korea was 2,473 individuals. The No. 13 and No. 14 unit segment located at the vicinity of Samcheok showed higher density than others. The styrofoam and vinyl & plastic amounted to 76.1%. In the coast of the Gangwondo, the vinyl & plastic showed the highest density of 6 items were 41.3% and 68.0% on May and August, respectively. The total numbers of marine floating debris on May and August were 3,399 individuals. Vinyl & plastic accounted for 59.4%(2,019 ind.) among all debris, next styrofoam 15.8%(537 ind.) and wood 11.2%(379 ind.).

수원지역 빗물의 중금속 함량 평가 (Wet Deposition of Heavy metals in Suwon Area)

  • 수원지역 영농기 빗물의 중금속 농도 및 부하특성을 구명하기 위하여 2002과 2003년 $4\sim10$월 사이에 빗물을 채수하여 빗물의 중금속 분포와 가중평균 변화, 화학성분과의 관계 및 부하정도를 비교 검토하였다. 빗물 중 화학성분 함량은 조사 시기에 따라 함량변이가 심하였고, 강우량 대비 pH의 가중평균은 $4.7\sim5.5$ 수준이었다. 빗물의 중금속 가중평균은 Zn>Pb>Cu>Ni>Cr>As>Cd 순이었고, 2002년과 비교하여 2003년에 Cd, Cu 및 As 성분이 상대적으로 높게 나타났다. 강우중의 주 이온성분과 중금속 함량의 관계는 모든 성분에서 정의 상관을 보였고, 상관계수로 볼 때 As, Cd, Cu, Zn 및 Ni 성분이 Pb 및 Cr보다 상대적으로 상관성이 큰 것으로 나타났다. 강우중의 중금속 농도분포를 이해하기 위하여 부하계수(Enrichment factors)를 조사한 결과, 부하계수 평균치가 대체로 Cd>Pb>As>Cu>Zn>Ni>Cr 순이었고, 주로 자연적 발생 유래원소로 알려진 Fe, Mg 및 Ca 등보다 상대적으로 높은 경향을 보였다. 월별 빗물의 중금속 부하계수는 봄철인 $4\sim5$월이 높았고, 중금속의 습식침적은 대체로 강우량의 영향을 받아 강우기인 6-8월에 높은 경향을 보였다.

갈뫼중학교 빗물이용시설에서의 저장 빗물수질평가 (Evaluation of Stored Rainwater Quality at Galmoe Middle School Rainwater Harvesting System)

  • One of the major obstacles confronted in promoting the rainwater harvesting is the concerns of acid rain and heavy metals. Although there are many data concerning the quality of rainwater precipitation for the study of acid rain, the study on the quality of stored rainwater has been limited. In this study, we monitored the quality of stored rainwater at Galmoe middle school, where a rainwater harvesting system is installed and in use for more than two years. We measured water quality parameters such as pH, Electro Conductivity(EC), Dissolved Oxygen(DO), and some metals (aluminium (Al), chromium(Cr), manganese(Mn), zinc(Zn), copper(Cu), arsenic(As), cadmium(Cd), lead(Pb)). The monitoring period was during one year from September 9th 2003 to August 5th 2004. It was observed that the average pH of stored rainwater is neutral. DO is similar to tap water and EC is lower than tap water. Metal Concentrations are within the concentration specified in Drinking Water Quality Standard. Overall, the stored rainwater quality is good enough for sundry use and there's no threat of acid rain and air pollution, if the rainwater harvesting system is well designed and maintained.

산화제 개폐밸브 플랜지 기밀 해석 및 시험에 관한 연구 (Study on Leakage Analyses and Experimets on a Main Oxidizer shut-off Valve)

  • 산화제 개폐밸브 개발 과정의 시험에서 금속 코니컬 씰이 장착된 밸브 중간 플랜지부에서 외부 누설이 발생하였다. 이에 기밀과 관련된 형상 변수인 볼트 수 및 플랜지 형상이 변경된 3가지 모델에 대하여 구조 해석을 수행하여, 설계 변경에 따른 무게 증가를 줄이고 동시에 플랜지간 벌어짐 양이 가장 적은 모델을 개선 모델로 선정하였다. 선정된 모델의 플랜지 부를 모사하는 시험 치구를 제작하여 기밀시험을 재수행하여 누설이 발생하지 않는 것은 확인하였으며, 결과적으로 플랜지 부의 기밀을 확보할 수 있는 설계 해석 방법을 검증하였다.

중학교 학생들의 환경에 대한 태도 연구 (A Study on the Recognition of the Environmental Matters by Korean Middle School Students)

  • This result showed that the middle school students' response for the environment condition was highly negative. The major findings of this study are as follows. 1. Students would become to know the environmental pollution through reading of newspapers and TV rather than school education. 2. Students' response for air and water pollution was seriously accepted in city areas than in country areas, and in large cities than in small cities. 3. Students' response for air pollution showed that the quality of air was getting worse and major factor of air pollution was the exhausts of automobiles. 4. It showed that students' concern for water pollution was increased and water pollution was being accelerated by the increase of domestic and industrial sewages, the overuse of the agricultural chemicals, the entrophication and acid rain. 5. Students thought that soil pollution was mainly due to factory sewage, life sewage, heavy metal and agricultural medicines and so on. But now they think it is due to the degenerated and inseparable things such as used vinyle for farm and plastics. 6. Most students thought of the pollution of our country as serious. But they thought it could be removed if we tried to get rid of pollution. 7. Now students' consciousness to protect the nature took an active interest turn and was strong. Putting these various findings together, I suggested that, the efforts to turn students affirmative consciousness for the environment and a powerful plan by the nation to take off pollution should be needed. Also the education to enforce the environment preservation had to be needed.

  • Electro-magnetic type implantable middle ear hearing aid has been empirically developed. But for further improvement of the system performance more quantitative approach is necessary. In this paper, we analyzed vibrating transducer which is most important to design the system, appropriate for given hearing level, and implemented it. Using this transducer, implantable hearing aid system are developed. To verify the design process, we experimented with driving metal strip by the developed system. From the experiment, frequency response of implemented device showed good characteristic at audio frequency and we confirmed that each part of the developed system operated well.

일 지역 중.고등학생들의 환경성 질환 및 보건교육 실태 조사 (Research on the Actual State of Environmental Disease and Health Education at Middle and High School Students)

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to perform basic study on environmental and respiratory diseases in Ulsan and vicinities. Also, this study evaluated the actual state of environmental disease and health education at middle and high schools in Ulsan and surroundings. Methods: For this study, we conducted a survey on the health of the general public, environmental effects, and investigated the characteristics of environmental disease, health and hygiene education, etc. The populations of this study were middle and high school students in Ulsan, Korea. This study investigated the knowledge of environmental disease and health education at schools in Ulsan and vicinities from November 2009 to December 2009. All statistical calculations were performed with Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) for Windows, and gained the following results by implementing Frequency Analysis, Cross-tabulation Analysis and ANOVA. Results: As more and more environmental diseases are increased, the interest of the people has been increasing on this. The incidence rates of asthma and atopy were represented the top 25% of the country in Korea. The source of heavy metal, PAHs and VOCs in Ulsan includes the Petrochemical Complex at Nam-gu and Ulju-gun, the Nonferrous Metal Industrial Complex at Onsan-eup, Ulju-gun, and the Heavy Industrial Complex at Dong-gu and Buk-gu. Especially, there are a number of fossil fuel combustion facilities such as waste incineration plants and boilers at Nam-gu and the Onsan Industrial Complex. It may help greatly to investigate the characteristics of environmental pollutants such as environmental air pollutant and indoor contaminant to better manage the local student's health. Conclusions: It has been revealed that the hazardous chemicals and environmental contaminants are main substances of cause for asthma, atopy, dermatitis, and allergy disease. Therefore, through with collecting basic data such as environmental disease of inhabitants, health education, conscious and knowledgeable level in parents of students and students, We have to exert to improve knowledge and prevention with health life in school through development of health education program systematically for preventing of environmental disease.

MEMS 기술 기반 이식형 청각 장치용 전자기 엑츄에이터의 소형화 및 최적화 (Miniaturization and Optimization of Electromagnetic Actuators for Implantable Hearing Device Based on MEMS Technology)

  • A micro electromagnetic actuator with high vibration efficiency is proposed for use in an implantable hearing device. The actuator, which can be implanted in the middle ear, consists of membranes based on the stainless steel 304 (SUS-304), and other components. In conventional actuators, in which a thick membrane and a silicone elastomer are used, the size reduction was difficult. In order to miniaturize the size of the actuator, it is necessary to reduce the size of the actuation potion that generates the driving force, resulting in reduction of the electromagnetic force. In this paper, the electromagnetic actuator is further miniaturized by the metal membrane and the vibration amplitude is also optimized. The actuator designed according to the simulation results was fabricated by using micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) technology. In particular, a $20{\mu}m$ thick metal membrane was fabricated using the erosion process, which reduced the length of the actuator by more than $400{\mu}m$. In the experiments, the vibration displacement characteristics of the optimized actuator were above 400 nm within the range of 0.1 to 1 kHz when a current of $1mA_{rms}$ was applied to the coil.
