  • The effect of Cu content on microstructure and mechanical properties of nano-sized Cu dispersed $Al_2O_3(Al_2O_3/Cu)$ nanocomposites was investigated. The nanocomposites with Cu content of 2.5 to 10 vol% were prepared by reduction and hot-pressing of $Al_2O_3/CuO$ powder mixtures. The nanocomposites with Cu content of 2.5 and 5vol% exhibited the maximum fracture strength of 820MPa and enhanced toughness compared with monolithic $Al_2O_3$. The strengthening was mainly attributed to the refinement of $Al_2O_3$ matrix grains. The toughening mechanism was discussed by the observed microstructural feature based on crack bridging.

  • The effect of trace metallic additives on microstructure, surface appearance and hardness of zinc electrodeposits was investigated by using sulfate bath and flow cell system. The preferred orientation of Zn deposit with Fe additive was (103)(104)+(002) mixed texture and that of Zn deposits with both Fe-Ni and Fe-Co additives was (10 1), while Zn deposits with Fe-Cr additives had (002) preferred orientation. The surface morphology of the zinc deposits was closely related to the preferred orientation of the deposits. The glossiness of Zn deposit with Fe-Ni additives was higher than that of pure Zn deposit, while the glossiness of Zn deposits with both Fe-Co and Fe-Cr additives was lower than that of pure Zn deposit. The hardness of Zn deposits with both Fe-Ni and Fe-Co additives was noticeably higher than that of Zn-Fe deposit, while that of Zn deposit with Fe-Cr additives was similar to that of Zn-Fe deposit.

  • The present work is a study on the argon gas pressure effects of Sinter/HIP sintering on microstructure and strength of different grades of TiC-NiMo cermets. Titanium carbide in the composition of different grades of TiC-NiMo cermets was ranged from 40 to 80 wt.% and the ratio of nickel to molybdenum in the initial powder composition was 1:1, 2:1 and 4:1 respectively. On the sintered alloys, the main strength characteristic, transverse rupture strength (TRS) was measured. Furthermore, the microstructure parameters of some alloys were measured and the pressure effect on pore elimination was evaluated. All the results were compared with common, vacuum sintered alloys. The TRS values of TiC-NiMo cermets could be considerably improved by using Sinter/HIP technique, for high-carbide fraction alloys and for alloys sintered at elevated temperatures.

  • In this study, effect of heat treatment on the microstructure and damping capacity of hot rolled magnesium alloys was investigated. The microstructure of hot rolled magnesium consisted of dendrite structure and $Mg_{17}Al_{12}$ compounds precipitated along the grain boundry. The dendrite structure was dissipated and $Mg_{17}Al_{12}$ compounds was decomposed by annealing treatment, and then they dissolved in ${\alpha}-Mg$. With an increasing the annealing temperature and time, damping capacity was slowly increased by the growth of grain size and decreasing of defects induced by hot rolling. Two kinds of magnesium alloys AZ 31 and AZ 61 after annealing showed no difference in damping capacity.

  • The effect of microstructure on the fracture toughness of multi pass weld metal has been investigated. The micromechanisms of fracture process are identified by in-situ scanning electron microscopy(SEM) fracture observation using single edge notched specimen. The notches of the in-situ fracture specimens were carefully located such that the ends of the notches were in the as-deposited top bead and the reheated weld metal respectively. The observation of in-situ fracture process for as-deposited top bead indicated that as strains are applied, microcracks are formed at the interfaces between soft proeutectoid ferrite and acicular ferrite under relatively low stress intensity factor. Then, the microcracks propagate easily along the proeutectoid ferrite phase, leading to final fracture. These findings suggest that proeutectoid ferrite plays an important role in reducing the toughness of the weld metal. On the other hand, reheated regions showed that the microcrack initiated at the notch tip grows along the localized shear bands under relatively high stress intensity factor, confirming that reheated area showing momogeneous and fine microstructure would be beneficial to the fracture resistance of weld metal.

  • Co-Cr-Mo based sheet I-WP lattice was fabricated via laser powder bed fusion. The effect of microstructure and the I-WP shape on compressive mechanical response was investigated. Results of compression test showed that yield strength of the sheet I-WP was 176.3 MPa and that of bulk Co-Cr-Mo (reference material) was 810.4 MPa. By applying Gibson-Ashby analytical model, the yield strength of the lattice was reversely estimated from that of the bulk specimen. The calculated strength of the lattice obtained was 150.7 MPa. The shape of deformed lattice showed collective failure mode, and its microstructure showed that strain-induced martensitic transformation occurred in the overall lattice. The deformation behavior of additively manufactured sheet I-WP lattice was also discussed.

  • Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of short and long duration sintering on microstructure and flexural strength of zirconia. Methods: To conduct three-point bending test, Zirconia specimens are milled according to ISO 6872 guidelines(N=18, n=9 per group). Two specimens group(n=8) is sintered for 10 hours(Standard schedule) and 3 hours(Speed schedule) at the peak temperature of 1550℃ with silicon carbide sintering furnace. Flexural strength of specimens are measured by instron. After coating each specimen(n=1), microstructure of specimens is observed using Scanning Electron Microscope(SEM). T-test was utilized to statistically assess the data. Results: The mean and standard deviation value of the flexural strength for standard schedule group are 578.15±57.48Mpa, that of speed schedule are 465.9±62.34Mpa. T-test showed significant differences in flexural strength between two zirconia specimen group which applied standard schedule and speed schedule respectively(p<0.05). Conclusion: The result of this study showed that the increase in sintering time led to increased grain size, and also to a positive effect on the flexural strength.

  • In the present study, the effect of yttrium addition on the microstructure and mechanical property of rapidly solidified AZ91 alloy by melt spinning process is estimated. As yttrium was added, the microstructure of RS ribbons and extrudates became finer than those of AZ91, and RE related phases $(Al_2RE)$ were formed. In the case of the addition of 3wt%Y, the microstructure of extrude showed the finest grain size. At room temperature, the AZ91 + 3wt%Y alloy showed the highest tensile strength, 352 MPA due to precipitation of ${\beta}(Mg_{17}Al_{12})$ phase and $Al_2RE$ phase. At the elevated temperature, the mechanical property of AZ91 + 3wt%Y alloy was higher than those of other Mg alloys. The reasons were that $Al_2Y$ compound was thermally stable and suppressed the grain growth. In contrast with $Al_2Y$ compounds, ${\beta}$ phase was thermally unstable and could not suppress the grain growth at the elevated temperature. Therefore, $Al_2Y$ phase contributed to improve the thermal stability of RS AZ91 alloy.

  • The HPS(High Porosity Support, 39.3%) and the LPS( Low Porosity Support, 18.7%) were fabricated to investigate the phase transformation and the chance of microstructure with porosity of alumina support. Alumina sol was made using aluminum tri-sec $butoxide(ATSB,\; Al(O-Bu)_3)$, the membrane on porous support with different porosity and the membrane without support were fabricated. The $\theta$-to ${\alpha}-A1_2O_3$ phase transformation in the membranes was investigated using thin film X-ray diffraction (XRD), and the change of microstructure was observed using scanning electron microscopy(SEM). XRD patterns showed that the membrane on LPS and HPS had 10$0^{\circ}C$, 5$0^{\circ}C$ higher $\theta$-to ${\alpha}-A1_2O_3$ transformation temperature compared to the unsupported membrane. A similar effect was also observed in microstructure of the membranes, theoritical temperature difference were 97$^{\circ}C$ and 44$^{\circ}C$ by Crapeyron equation.

  • Mg-Al-Sn-Si system alloy, as a promising cheap heat-resistant Mg alloy for automobile engine part, has been investigated. Refinement of microstructure and precipitation of thermally stable secondary phases are important goal for the design of heat-resistant Mg alloy. In this study, the effect of Ce on the microstructure and room temperature mechanical properties of Mg-Al-Sn-Si alloy was investigated. High thermally stable $Mg_2Si$ phases in Mg-Al-Sn-Si alloy is very useful intermetallic compound. However, the $Mg_2Si$ phases often result in poor mechanical properties due to the coarse chinese type $Mg_2Si$ phases. The experimental specimens were fabricated by fluxless melting under $CO_2+SF_6$ atmosphere and poured into the permanent pre-heated at $200^{\circ}C$. It was told that Ce addition can modify $Mg_2Si$ phases and refine microstructure and improve the tensile strength, yield strength and elongation.
