  • Comparison of fruit bodies of Pleurotus ostreatus cultivar chunchu No .2 grown on the sawdust, rice straw and cotton waste substrates revealed differences in the pattern of differentiation of hyphal compartments. Required period for primordium induction of fruit bodies grown on sawdust substrate was 13 days. Physical structure shown as hardness of stipes grown on the sawdust substrate, fruit bodies were harden than control. Pileocystidia were well developed on the surface of pileus in the fruit body cultivated on rice straw. Microstructures of fruit body grown on the sawdust and cotton wastes substrates shown fast-discharge of basidiospore and sytoms ageing. Hyphae of fruit bodies formed on sawdust substrate had less stainable cytoplasmic material and many more vacuoles than hyphae of fruit bodies formed on synthetic substrate with 50% of pine sawdust, 30% of cotton seed hull and 20 of beet pulp(control).

  • The electrical arc furnace (EAF) classified as a special waste contains many flux components producing melts during a sintering process, so it decreases the sintering temperature and improves the mechanical properties of specimens. Increasing dust content in a clay-dust system brick, however, may cause the fraction defective higher due to the excessive liquid produced. To control the liquid behavior produced during sintering process for the clay-dust system specimens, the $Al_2O_3$ was added and the physical properties were analyzed. The microstructure for the clay-dust system body sintered with $Al_2O_3$ became homogeneous and the overall size of pores decreased. Adding $Al_2O_3$ to clay-dust system body increased the mechanical properties and the temperature of maximum strength increased as much as $50^{\circ}C$, and the apparent density increased and the absorption decreased. The mullite ($3Al_2O_3{\cdot}2SiO_2$) was produced during sintering process by reaction of $Al_2O_3$ and $SiO_2$ which could participate to liquid-producing-process and the viscosity of melts increased which was proved by measuring a critical viscosity temperature (Tcv) therefore, the refractoriness of specimens were improved to lower the fraction defective.

  • Silica films were prepared on Si single crystal substrates by a sol-gel process without DMF using TEOS as a starting material. Films were fabricated by spin coating technique. For films having a composition of TEOS : HCI(1:0.05mol), gelation time, the thickness of films, the formation of cracks and the microstructure of the films were investigated as a function of the molar ratio of $CH_3OH and H_2O$. With 8mol $CH_3OH$, the longest gelation time was measured to be 640hr. The thickness of the coated films was decreased with increasing content of $CH_3OH$. The films were sintered at $500^{\circ}C$ for 1hr with a heating rate of $0.6^{\circ}C$/min. The coated films showed worm-like grains and partially cracked microstructures at an amount of $CH_3OH$ 2mol and 4mol. The addition of more than 8 mole of $CH_2OH$ resulted in crack-free silica films. This suggests that crack-free films can be fabricated by controlling the surface tension energy of the sol solutions without DMF.

  • Polymerization properties of six dinuclear constrained geometry catalysts (DCGC) were investigated. The different length bridges of three catalysts were para-phenyl (Catalyst 1), para-xylyl (Catalyst 2), and para-diethylene phenyl (Catalyst 6). The other three DCGC have the same para-xylyl bridge with the different substituents at the phenyl ring of the bridge. The selected substituents were isopropyl (Catalyst 3), n-hexyl (Cataylst 4), and n-octyl (Catalyst 5), It was found that the longer catalyst not only exhibited a greater activity but also prepared a higher molecular weight copolymer. The catalyst 3 having a bulky isopropyl substituent revealed the lower activity but formed the highest molecular weight polymer comparing with the other alkyl substituted DCGCs. These results were able to be understood on the basis of the electronic and steric characteristics of the bridge. This study confirms that the control of the bridge structure of DCGC may contribute to control the microstructure of polymers.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the surface spraying effect of materials on the rheological properties of frozen starch with microwave heating. Microwave helps reduce cooking time by high temperature, but swiftly snatches moisture from foods such as frozen starches (buns and noodles etc) and makes surface of foods harder. Four types of maltodextrin materials have been prepared for different concentration solutions and sprayed on surface doughs of sheet type. Sprayed dough samples were Quickly frozen at $-70^{\circ}C$ and wrapped with polypropylene film. All the treated samples were kept at 0, -20 and $-50^{\circ}C$, and then taken out periodically for measurement of the quality during storage. The quality attributes evaluated after heating with microwave energy include sensory quality retrogradation, texture, surface color and microstructure. The quality of frozen starches deteriorated with long term storage even at low temperatures of -20 and $-50^{\circ}C$, and the spray materials were found to improve the textural and physical properties of frozen starches in the microwave heating. Particularly, maltodextrin with D.E value of $9\~12$ had the most desirable effects of quality improvement.

  • This study was performed to optimize the preparation of frozen lotus roots. Prior to freezing, an optimal blanching condition at $100^{\circ}C$ for 5 min was established, based on the microbial growth, texture, total phenolic content (TPC), and sensory evaluation results. The blanched samples were then frozen under various freezing conditions ($-20^{\circ}C$ in a freezer for 2 hr, $-70^{\circ}C$ in a gas nitrogen convection chamber for 7 min, and $-196^{\circ}C$ in liquid nitrogen for 20 sec), and their qualities after thawing were determined. The scanning electron microscopic analysis indicated that the microstructure of the sample frozen at $-70^{\circ}C$ was similar to that of the control sample, compared with the other freezing conditions (-20 and $-196^{\circ}C$). The antioxidant activities of the frozen samples decreased compared to those of the control, but there was no significant (p<0.05) difference among the treatments. In terms of TPC, the samples frozen at -70 and $-196^{\circ}C$ had significantly (p<0.05) higher values than the sample frozen at $-20^{\circ}C$. In addition, the drip loss of the sample frozen at $-20^{\circ}C$ was higher than those of the other frozen samples. These results suggest that freezing at $-70^{\circ}C$ in a gas nitrogen convection chamber can be an optimal freezing method of producing high-quality frozen lotus roots.

  • Rare-earth elements were doped with Mg to enhance the temperature stability of dielectric properties of BaTiO3 for its application to MLCC (Multi-Layer Ceramic Capacitor). The additives strongly affect both grain growth and densification behaviors during sintering, and hence dielectric properties. The additive effects therefore should be examined in each system with different additives. This study investigated the crystal structure, grain growth and densification behaviors and related variations in dielectric constant with respect to sintering temperature. Dielectric constant appears to be varied with grain size in a temperature range between 1200 and 1300℃, suggesting the importance of grain size control. The temperature dependence of grain size variation was well explained by an established theory correlating the grain growth behavior with grain boundary structure. This accordance provides a basis for sintering technique to control grain growth thus to improve dielectric constant in rare-earth doped BaTiO3.

  • The effects of freezing and thawing conditions on microbiological quality and microstructure change of inoculated (Listeria monocytogenes and Campylobacter jejuni) and non-inoculated chicken breasts were investigated. Chicken breasts were frozen with air blast freezing (-20, -70, and $-150^{\circ}C$), ethanol ($-70^{\circ}C$) and liquid nitrogen ($-196^{\circ}C$) immersion freezing. There were no significant differences on the populations of L. monocytogenes inoculated with chicken breasts under different freezing conditions. However, air blast freezing ($-20^{\circ}C$) resulted in significant reductions for total aerobic bacteria and C. jejuni compared to the control and other freezing treatments. The frozen samples were thawed with (hot or cold) air blast, water immersion, and high pressure thawing at $4^{\circ}C$ and $25^{\circ}C$. the populations of total aerobic bacteria, and yeast and mold in the frozen chicken breast increased by 5.78 and 4.05 log CFU/g after water immersion thawing ($25^{\circ}C$) treatment. After five freeze-thaw cycles, the populations of total aerobic bacteria, yeast and mold, and C. jejuni were reduced by 0.29~1.40 log cycles, while there were no significant differences (P > 0.05) in the populations of L. monocytogenes depending on the freeze-thaw cycles. In addition, the histological examination of chicken breasts showed an increase in spacing between the muscle fiber and torn muscle fiber bundles as the number of freeze-thaw cycles increased. These results indicate that freezing and thawing processes could affect in the levels of microbial contamination and the histological change of chicken breasts.

  • Liquid phases in ZnO varistors cause more complex phase development and microstructure, which makes the control of electrical properties and reliability more difficult. Therefore, we have investigated 2 mol% $CaCO_3$ doped $ZnO-Co_3O_4-Cr_2O_3-La_2O_3$ (ZCCLCa) bulk ceramics as one of the compositions without liquid phase sintering additive. The results were as follows: when $CaCO_3$ is added to ZCCLCa ($644{\Omega}cm$) acting as a simple ohmic resistor, CaO does not form a secondary phase with ZnO but is mostly distributed in the grain boundary and has excellent varistor characteristics (high nonlinear coefficient ${\alpha}=78$, low leakage current of $0.06{\mu}A/cm^2$, and high insulation resistance of $1{\times}10^{11}{\Omega}cm$). The main defects $Zn_i^{{\cdot}{\cdot}}$ (AS: 0.16 eV, IS & MS: 0.20 eV) and $V_o^{\bullet}$ (AS: 0.29 eV, IS & MS: 0.37 eV) were found, and the grain boundaries had 1.1 eV with electrically single grain boundary. The resistance of each defect and grain boundary decreases exponentially with increasing the measurement temperature. However, the capacitance (0.2 nF) of the grain boundary was ~1/10 lower than that of the two defects (~3.8 nF, ~2.2 nF) and showed a tendency to decrease as the measurement temperature increased. Therefore, ZCCLCa varistors have high sintering temperature of $1,200^{\circ}C$ due to lack of liquid phase additives, but excellent varistor characteristics are exhibited, which means ZCCLCa is a good candidate for realizing chip type or disc type commercial varistor products with excellent performance.

  • This paper presents an investigation of the mechanical and microstructural properties of Class F fly ash based geopolymer containing sodium sulfate as an additive. Sodium sulfate was used as an chemical additive at the dosage levels of 0, 2, 4, and 6wt% of fly ash. Sodium hydroxide and sodium silicate solutions were used to activate fly ash. The compressive strengths of geopolymer pastes were measured at the age of 28 days. The microstructures of the geopolymer pastes were examined using XRD, MIP and SEM tests. The additions of 2wt% and 4wt% sodium sulfate produced geopolymers with high strength, while increasing the dosage of levels to 6% resulted in almost no changes in strength, comparing with the control geopolymer. The optimum increase in strength was obtained with the addition of 4wt% sodium sulfate. As the amount of sodium sulfate is increased, no additional crystalline phase was detected and no change of amorphous phase indicated despite the change in the strength development. The increase in the strength was due to the change of pore size distribution in samples. As addition of sodium sulfate altered the morphologies of reactive productions and Si/Al ratios of the reaction products, the strengths were thus affected. It was found that the strengths of geopolymer were larger for lower Si/Al ratios of reaction products formed in samples. The optimal amount of sodium sulfate in the fly ash based geopolymer helps to improve mechanical properties of the geopolymer, on the other hand, the high percentage of sodium sulfate could exist as an impurity in the geopolymer and hinder the geopolymer reaction.
