We fabricated the YBCO films on LAO substrate using the TFA-MOD method and evaluated the effects of heat treatment temperature and film thickness on the microstructure, degree of texture, and critical properties. The calcining and firing were peformed at the temperature range of $370^{\circ}C-460^{\circ}C\;and\;750^{\circ}C-800^{\circ}C$, respectively. For the films fired at $775^{\circ}C$ after calcining at $400^{\circ}C-430^{\circ}C$showed highest critical temperature (Tc-onset) of 89.5 K and critical current (Ic) of 40A/cm-width which corresponds to critical current density (Jc) of $1.8MA/cm^2$. The highest critical properties are probably attributed to the formation of purer YBCO phase, stronger biaxial texture, and higher oxygen content, according to the XRD, pole-figure, SEM, Raman analysis. From the multi-coated films, the Ic increased from 39 to 169 A/cm-width as the coating repeated to four times, while the corresponding Jc was measured from once to be in the range of $0.8-1.2MA/cm^2$. Both Ic and Jc degraded as the coating repeated further, indicating that the optimum thickness is in the range of $1.0{\mu}m-1.7{\mu}m$.
(YNdSm)-Ba-Cu-O system high Tc composite superconductors were directionally grown by zone melting process, having large temperature gradient, in air atmosphere. Cylindrical green rods of $(YNdSm)_{1.8}Ba_{2.4}Cu_{3.4}O_x$ [(YNS)1.8]composite oxides by CIP (cold isostatic pressing) method using rubber mold were fabricated. The microstructure and superconducting properties were investigated by XRD, TEM and SQUID magnetometer. The size of nonsuperconducting $(YNdSm)_2BaCuO_5$ inclusions of the melt-textured (YNS)1.8 sample with $CeO_2$ additive were remarkably reduced and uniformly distributed within the superconducting (YNS)1.8 matrix. (YNS)1.8 samples, with / without $CeO_2$ additive, showed an onset $T_c{\geq}90K$ and sharp superconducting transition. The critical current density $J_c$ value of the (YNdSm)1.8 superconductor with $CeO_2$ additive were 840 A, $1.2{\times}104A/cm^2$ in 77 K, 0 Tesla by direct current transport method.
In this study, effects of solidification modes (primary $\delta$-ferrite, primary ${\gamma}$-austenite) on the pit initiation and propagation in the 304L and 316L austenitic stainless steel weld metals were investigated. The solidification mode of weld metal was controlled by the addition of nitrogen to Ar shielding gas. Through the electrochemical experiments (potentiodynamic anodic polarization and potentiostatic time-current transient test) and metallographic examination (microstructure and elemental distribution), the following results were obtained. The more the volume content of nitrogen in the shielding gas were, the lower critical current density for passivity was observed. In comparison with weldments solidified through the primary $\delta$-ferrite solidification mode and the primary ${\gamma}$-solidification mode, the former showed higher critical pitting potential and a longer incubation time for stable pit initiation than the latter. However, in the pit propagation stage the former exhibited a faster dissolution rate than the latter. These results were believed to ee related to the distribution of alloying elements such as Cr, Mo, Ni and S.
We fabricated $YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-x}$(YBCO) films on (00l) $LaAlO_3$ substrates prepared by metal organic deposition(MOD) method using trifluoroacetate(TFA) solution. The films with various thicknesses were prepared by repeating the dip-coating and calcining processes. The effects of film thickness on phase formation, microstructures, and critical properties were evaluated by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. The microstructure and resultant critical current($I_C$) and critical current density($J_C$) varied remarkably with film thickness: The ($I_C$) value increased from 39 to 160 A/cm-width as the number of coatings increased from one to four, while the corresponding $J_C$ was measured to be in the range of $0.84-1.21\;MA/cm^2$. Both the $I_C$ and $J_C$ decreased when an additional coating was applied due to microstructural degradation, indicating that the optimum thickness is in the range of $1.1-1.8\;{\mu}m$. The possible cause for the decrease in the $I_C$ and $J_C$ value for film thicker than $1.8\;{\mu}m$ include non-uniform thickness, increased surface roughness, and the poor formability of the YBCO phase and texture arising from the insufficient heat treatment time with respect to the increased thickness.
In the ($Bi_{1-x}Pb_{x}$)$_2$$Sr_2$$Ca_2$$Cu_{3.6}$$O_{y}$ (x=0∼0.5) superconductors, DTA and XRD-pattern analyses were performed to obviousely define optimal calcining and sintering temperature. And, understanding behaviors of High-Tc phase with preparation condition of superconductors, that is, calcining and sintering temperature, sintering time, and variation of Pb contents, in order to make single phase of superconductor, microstructure and its composition were analyzed with SEM, XRD, and EDAX. continuously, the cause of phase transition was define with synthetically studying mutural relation between measured electrical resistivity and current density. Also, in order to design enhancement of critical current density, Jc required for realization, samples varied with pressing condition were made, and measured its, Jc.
In order to investigate the effect of Ge addition to the Cu matrix on the microstructure and the critical current density, four kinds of internal tin processed Nb$_3$Sn strands with pure Cu and Cu 0.2, 0.4, 0.6 wt % Ge alloys were drawn to 0.8 mm diameter. The microstructure and critical current of internal tin processed Nb$_3$Sn wires that were heat treated at temperatures ranging from 68$0^{\circ}C$ to 74$0^{\circ}C$ for 240h were investigated. The Ge addition to the matrix did not make workability worse. A Ge rich layer in the Cu-Ge matrix suppressed the growth of the Nb$_3$Sn layer and promoted grain coarsening. The greater the Ge content in the matrix, the lower the net Jc result after Nb$_3$sn reaction heat treatment. There was no significant variation in Jc observed with heat treatment temperature ranging from 68$0^{\circ}C$ to 74$0^{\circ}C$. The values of AC loss of Ge added wires were decreased to 40 % compare with no addition wire. Low AC loss was due to segregation of Ge rich layer in the Cu-Ge matrix. If Ge added wire with thin Nb filaments were fabricated, slow diffusion rate of Sn would be overcome and decreased AC loss that is weak Point of internal tin method.
Many of research efforts have been focused on the improvement of critical current density (Jc) of silver-sheathed Bi-2223 tapes far practical applications. In this study, the transformation of Bi-2212 phase was investigated, which was transformed to orthorhombic from tetragonal through pre-annealing during powder packing and drawing process. The relationship between hardness of Bi-2212 orthorhombic phase and workability of Bi-2223/Ag tape was investigated. Bi-2223 superconducting wires with 55 filaments were fabricated by stacking and drawing process with different heat-treatment histories. Before rolling process, round wires were pre-annealing at 76$0^{\circ}C$ and in a low oxygen partial pressure. We confirmed that pre-annealing step was to transform to Bi-2212 orthorhombic structure from Bi-2212 tetragonal structure and to reduce the formation of second phases. However the breakages were created at Ag-alloy clad during rolling for pre-annealed Bi-22231Ag tapes. Several pre-annealing scenarios were introduced to reduce the breakages during rolling process. Microstructure and critical current density of pre-annealed Bi-2223 superconducting tapes were investigated. We could achieve proper pre-annealing conditions for Ag-alloy clad Bi-2223 superconducting tapes.
YBa2Cu3O7-x oxide superconductors were fabricated by sintering and hotisostatic pressing (HIP), and their microstructures and properties were compared with each other. Thougha part of the second phase was observed along grain boundaries, their structures were consisted of single (123) phase and they had many porosities. But, porosities were remakably reduced by Hiping and the densification was brought about. The structure of (123) compound also showed a number of twins, which are typical of high Tc superconductors. The on-set temperature of YBa2Cu3O7-x compound sintered at 96$0^{\circ}C$ in oxygen and hipped at 88$0^{\circ}C$ was highest, but that shwoed 0 resistance at 87$^{\circ}$K, which is a little lower than the compound sintered at 96$0^{\circ}C$. HIP treatment also increased the critical current density of as-sintered compound. However, its value was low, which may be ascribed to the many pores of starting-sintered compact and partially to the second phase along grain boundaries.
The characteristics of Bi2212 round wire was systematically studied depending on different heat treatment conditions. Initial wire was drawn after routine PIT (Powder In Tube) process. The wire was divided into 3 pieces with 10 cm in length and 2.5 mm in diameter. 3 wires were pre-heat treated separately by different heat treatment schedules, heated in air and nitrogen atmosphere and centrifugally melted. Pre-heated wires were annealed at $845^{\circ}C$ for 40 hours in oxygen atmosphere. SEM results indicate that all pre-heated wires showed highly oriented microstructure. However the wire by centrifugally melted process showed higher density and better electric properties as compared with 2 other wires pre-heated in air and nitrogen atmosphere. The critical current of a centrifugally melted wire was about 18 A in 77 K.
