A nano-stereolithography (NSL) process has been developed for the fabrication of three-dimensional (3D) micro-devices with high spatital resolution of approximately 100 nm. In the NSL process, a complicated 3D structure can be created by stacking layer-by-layer, so it does not require any sacrificial layer or any supporting structure. A laminated layer was fabricated by means of solidifying liquid-state monomers using two-photon absorption (TPA) which was induced by a femtosecond laser. When the fabrication of a 3D stacked structure was finished, unsolidified liquid resins were rinsed by ethanol to develop the fabricated structures; then, the polymerized structure was only left on the glass substrate. Through this work, several 3D microstructures such as a micro-channel, shell structures, and photonic crystals were fabricated to evaluate the possibility of the developed system.
This study presents an optimal design of the coolant system of a non-refueling full-life small reactor by analyzing the space-integrated geometrical and electromagnetic variables of an extra vessel electromagnetic pump (EVEMP) for the circulation of a lead-bismuth eutectic (LBE) coolant. The EVEMP is an ideal alternative to the thermal-hydraulic system of non-refueling full-life micro reactors as it possesses no internal structures, such as impellors or sealing structures, for the transportation of LBE. Typically, the LBE passes through the annular flow channel of a reactor, is cooled by the heat exchanger, and then circulates back to the EVEMP flow channel. This thermal-hydraulic flow method is similar to natural circulation, which enhances thermal efficiency, while providing a golden time for cooling cores in the event of an emergency. When the forced circulation technology of the EVEMP was applied, the non-refueling full-life micro reactor achieve an output power of 60 MWt, which is higher than that achievable via the natural circulation method (30 MWt). Accordingly, an optimized EVEMP for Micro URANUS with a flow rate of 4196 kg/s and developed pressure of 73 kPa under a working temperature of 250 ℃ was designed.
In order to make a highly ordered three-dimensionally macro-porous structure of zirconia ceramics, porogen precursors PMMA beads were prepared by emulsion polymerization using acrylic monomer. The monodisperse PMMA latex beads were closely packed by centrifugation as a porogen template for the infiltration of zirconium acetate solution. The mixed compound of PMMA and zirconium acetate was dried. According to the firing schedule, dry compacts of PMMA and zirconium acetate were calcined at $475^{\circ}C$ to obtain micro-, macro-, and meso- structures of polycrystalline zirconia with monodispersed porosity. Inorganic frameworks composed of $ZrO_2$ were formed and showed a three Dimensionally Ordered Microstructure [3DOM] of $ZrO_2$ ceramics. The obtained $ZrO_2$ skeleton was calcined at $710^{\circ}C$. The 3DOM $ZrO_2$ skeleton showed color tuning in solutions such as deionized [DI] $H_2O$ and/or methanol. The monodispersed crystalline micro-structure with micro/meso porosity was observed by FE-SEM.
Y-junction microchannels are widely used as a flew mixer. Fluids are entered from two branch channels and merged together at a combined channel. In this study, we suggest a simple method to create the fluid digitization using flow instability phenomena. Two immiscible liquids (water/oil) are infused continuously to each Y-junction inlets. Because of the differences in fluid and flow properties at the interface, oil droplet is formed automatically followed by flow instability. In order to clarify the hydrodynamic aspects involved in oil droplet formation, a quantitative flow visualization study has performed. Highly resolved velocity vector fields are obtained by a micro-PIV technique, so that detail flow structures around the droplet are illustrated. In this study, fluorescent particles were mixed with water only for visualization of oil droplet and velocity field measurement in water flow.
There is great difficulty in machine below 10 micrometers by conventional machining methods, such as micro-EDM. However, ultra micro machining using focused ion beam(FIB) is able to machine to 50 nanometers. Bie & moulds techniques are better than one-to-one machining techniques in regards to production costs in the mass production of ultra size structures. Also, it is advantageous to machine die & moulds to the 10 micrometers level by FIB technique rather than other techniques. It is difficult to machine the three dimensional machining, such as micro lens, using FIB system because of their machining characteristics. In this paper, three dimensional machining techniques were properly introduced, and also experiments showed effectiveness of their techniques.
The objective of this study is to elucidate the feasibility of synchrotron X-ray micro CT as a non-destructive imaging method to visualize the three-dimensional morphological structures of biological and non-biological samples. The experiments were conducted in 7B2 X-ray micro CT beamline in Pohang Accelerate Laboratory (PAL). A rotational 3-axis stage was specially designed for $0^{\circ}-180^{\circ}$ scanning of test samples. Preliminary tests were performed for opaque samples including a mosquito head, a plant seed and gas diffusion layer (GDL) of polymer electrolyte fuel cell to verify the feasibility of the X-ray micro CT. It visualized clearly the internal structure of all the test samples, supporting its usefulness.
A problem of the surface friction is inevitable in the micro machines. However, the levitation by Meissner effect of high Tc superconductor gives a complete solution to the problem. The repulsive force between permanent magnets and superconductors is utilized to levitate and actuate micro structures without the surface friction. In this paper, a micro actuator using; Meissner effect of high Tc superconducting film (Meissnac) is proposed ; Meissnac is drived by the control of (Sugerconducting/ Normal) states of superconductor. The levitating force and the driving force are analyzed by the numerical method.
Digital holographic particle tracking velocimetry (HPTV) is developed by single high-speed camera and single continuous laser with long coherent length. This system can directly capture 4000 hologram fringe images for 1 second through a camera computer memory. The 3D particle location is made of the reconstruction by using a computer hologram algorithm. This system can successfully be applied to instantaneous 3D velocity measurement in the water flow inside a micro-tube. The average of 100 instantaneous velocity vectors is obtained by reconstruction and tracking with the time of evolution of recorded fringes images. In the near future, we will apply this technique to measure 3D flow information inside various micro structures.
The old technique of sandblasting which has been used for decoration of glass surface has recently been developed into a powder blasting technique for various materials, capable of producing micro structures larger than 100 m. This paper describes the performance of powder blasting technique in micro-line grooving of glass and the effect of the number of nozzle scanning on the depth and width of line groove. Experimental results showed that increasing the no. of nozzle scanning resulted in the increase of depth and width in grooves. Increase of width which may cause several problems in the precision machining results from wear of mask film.
Recently, many studies concern on the slip flow and slip length, which allow liquid flow to reduce drag force in microchannel. However, until now not enough investigation is performed experimentally to understand the slip flow in the superhydrophobic microchannel exhibiting riblet structures on vertical wall. Here we investigated and compared the slip flows according to the surface characteristics; hydrophilic, hydrophobic, and superhydrophobic wettabilities. Using the micro-PIV, velocity profiles can be obtained in the glass (hydrophilic), PDMS (hydrophobic), and micro-structured PDMS (superhydrophobic) microchannels. For both PDMS and superhydrophobic PDMS microchannels, we observed the slip effects showing the microscale slip lengths. Due to the micro-riblet, there are two distinctive flow characteristics on the riblet surface and the liquid meniscus in the valleys.
