The effect of the micro-internal stress which is induced in the ferrite grain by plastic constraint, on fracture behavior was investigated. The specimen used has combined microstructure with matrix of ferrite encapsulated by second phase of martensite. The micro-internal stress in the ferrite grain was estimated using a simple mechanical model, and its effect on micro and macro fracture behaviors was discussed. The results obtained are summarized as follows; The micro-internal stress promotes the formation of cleavage cracks in the ferrite during deformation. Consequently, it was concluded that the internal stress is one of the significant factors which cause the fracture ductility to decrease.

The effective fracture toughness testing of materials intended for application in Micro Electro Mechanical Systems (MEMS) devices is required in order to improve understanding of how micro sized material used in device may be expected to perform upon the micro scale. ${\gamma}$-TiAl based materials are being considered for application in MEMS devices at elevated temperatures. Especially, in Alloy 4, both ${\alpha}_2$ and ${\gamma}$ lamellae were altered markedly in 3,000 h, $700^{\circ}C$ exposure. Parallel decomposition of coarse ${\alpha}_2$ into bunches of very fine (${\alpha}_2+{\gamma}$) lamellae. Parallel decomposition of coarse ${\alpha}_2$ into bunches of very fine (${\alpha}_2+{\gamma}$) lamellae. The materials were examined 2 types Alloy 4 on heat exposed specimen($700^{\circ}C$, 3,000 h) and no heat exposed one. Micro sized cantilever beams were prepared mechanical polishing on both side at $25{\sim}30{\mu}m$ and electro final stage polishing to observe lamellar orientation of same colony with EBSD (Electron Backscatter Diffraction Pattern). Through lamellar orientation as inter-lamellae or trans-lamellae, Cantilever beam was fabricated with Focused Ion Beam(FIB). The directional behavior of the lamellar structure was important property in single material, because of the effects of the different processing method and variations in properties according to lamellar orientation. In MEMS application, it is first necessary to have a reliable understanding of the manufacturing methods to be used to produce micro structure.
This paper deals with the micro-surface-cracks behavior on the unnotched smooth specimens of Type 304 stainless steel at $593^{\circ}C$ in air under creep and creep-fatigue conditions that have 10 mim and 1 min load holding times respectively. The behaviors of the micro-surface-cracks have been visualized by means of surface replica method and optical micro-photography. The quantitative characteristics of initiation, growth and coalescence of micro-surface-cracks have been investigated by observing and measuring the crack growth behaviors. some of the important results are as follows: Main crack initiates at grain boundary in the early stage(10 to 20%)of its life time and grows through coalescence and finally leads to fracture. The distribution of micro-surface-crack length, 2a, can be plotted against the composite Weibull distribution. The growth rate of the main crack can be plotted against the stress intensity factor, crack tip opering displacement and J integral.

Having found by means of a tension-shear test an optimal spot welding condition under which the maximum weld strength is to be brought forth, this study made an examination of behavior of fracture concerned with behavior of stress distribution, observed around the nugget periphery of the specimens prepared under the optimal conditions, with one point spot welded mild steel sheets. The resultant findings are as follows: (1)There remarkably exists an optimal spot welding condition to indicate the maximum weld strength, and fracture of the specimens spot welded under that condition occurs outside the nugget boundary. (2)An experiment on the basis of a photoelastic model reveals that the maximum stress is distributed along the center line of the steel plate width but occurs on the region corresponding to heat affected zone of spot welds. (3)Heat affected zone of spot welds consists of coarse grains with considerably low micro Vickers hardness value and of fine grains of high micro Vickers hardness value, and in this unbalanced structure weak region are represented in coarse grain region, where fracture is initiated and continues its propagation.

We measured potential waveform of load, displacement, micro electric signal generated by rock and mortar fracture using PXI A/D Converter. The rock type used for measurement was used granite, limestone and sandstone, and mortar specimen. we made measuring equipment of physical properties to confirm basic information of physical properties, measured physical properties of rock engineering, electric resistivity and seismic velocity. Potential waveform system was built using PXI A/D Converter and measured potential waveform of load, displacement, micro-electric signal generated using this during uniaxial compressive test by the specimen finished such test of physical properties. Using the saturated rock and mortar specimen, micro electric signal increased, and It didn't increase a signal in dried rock and mortar specimen according as load and strain rate increases. But signal also increased in saturated or dried specimen in case of sandstone. It was possible to check the close correlation relationship the signal and fracture behavior by a compressive load as the signal of fracture position was increased bigger than the other position. It was also possible to check the correlation relationship between physical properties and micro geo-electric signal.

In order to determine the effects of hydrostatic pressure on the mechanical behavior of graphite fiber reinforced composites, the modulus, fracture stress(maximum stress), and fracture strain of graphite/epoxy composites have been determined as a function of pressure. Composite specimens used in this study were 90-deg unidirectional and had a 60% fiber volume fraction. Compressive tests under five different pressure levels were conducted. The result showed the modulus measured from as initial slope of stress-strain curve increased bilinearly with pressure with a break at 200 MPa. It was also found that fracture stress and fracture strain increased in a linear fashion with pressure.

The mechanical properties of Ferrite-Martensite dual phase steels are affected by microstructural factors, such as, martensite volume fractions, grain size of ferrite, hardness ratio of Ferrite-Martensite, connectivity and chemical components etc. Therefore, this study has been made on the influence of Impact fracture behavior which changes the hardness ratio of Ferrite-Martensite by mean of heat treatment of low carbon Mn-Steels. In order to analyze and examine the effect of fracture behavior under impact load, this study investigated the impact strength, the impact loading time, the absorbed energy on the fracture ductility of Ferrite-Martensite dual phase steels, the formation of micro crack and slip, and plastic restraint of martensite on the plastic deformation.
The micro-structural changes, strength characteristics, and micro-fractural behaviors at the joint interface between a Sn-4.0wt%Ag-0.5wt%Cu solder ball and UBM treated by isothermal aging are reported. From the reflow process for the joint interface, a small amount of intermetallic compound was formed. With an increase in the isothermal aging time, the type and amount of the intermetallic compound changed. The interface without an isothermal treatment showed a ductile fracture. However, with an increase in the aging time, a brittle fracture occurred on the interface due mainly to the increase in the size of the intermetallic compounds and voids. As a result, a drastic degradation in the shear strength was observed. From a microshear test by a scanning electron microscope, the generation of micro-cracks was initiated from the voids at the joint interface. They propagated along the same interface, resulting in coalescence with neighboring cracks into larger cracks. With an increase in the aging time, the generation of the micro-structural cracks was enhanced and the degree of propagation also accelerated.

In terms of behavior of fatigue cracks propagated after build-up around the artificial drilled miro-hole, this study has been made of the build-up process of slips and micro cracks, behavior of micro-crack propagation and the definition of fatigue limit under the rotating bending stress with low carbon steel. The results of this study are as follows: (1) The fatigue limit is the repropagating critical stress for the nonpropagating cracks which have grown to some limit around the micro-hole in regard of the magnitude of micro-hole. (2) Behavior of the slips and micro-cracks initiation are occurring simultaneously in front and in rear of micro-hole tips in the view of the rotational direction, regardless of the magnitude of micro-hole. (3) Behavior of fatigue crack propagation is different from magnitude of micro-hole, its behavior is propagation of single crack about respectively large hole, but about respectively small hole, fatigue crack propagated joining phenomena of micro-cracks. (4) The behavior of fatigue fracture is affected by the factor of its defects in the view of magnitude of micro-hole when the diameter of the micro-holes are smaller than 50.mu.m, and this is also affected with the size effect of micro-hole diameter.

Fractures of galvannealed coating layer during actual press forming in automotive applications were observed by scanning electron microscopy in order to understand fracture mechanism. Fracture behaviors of galvannealed coating layer in extra deep drawing quality steels and high strength steels have been studied by performing the tests describing the representative plastic deformation in sheet metal forming such as uni-axial tensile test, compression test, bi-axial test and plane strain test. Growth and direction of cracks were deeply related to the plastic deformation modes and history. The material properties of galvannealed coating layer were investigated by nano-indentation test equipped with Berkovich diamond indentor for the specimens. Hardness and elastic modulus of the coating layer were higher than bared steels and that was the reason for crack of coating layer. Flat friction test and drawbead friction test were performed to observe the effect of the surface morphology on the frictional characteristics. The micro-plasto hydrodynamic lubrication were appeared and played an important role in reducing the coefficient of friction.
