The background of this study lies in he investigation of the formation mechanism of ductile mode(nkanometer-size) chips of brittle materials such as fine ceramics glass and silicon. As the first step to achieve this purpose this paper intends to observe the micro-deformation behavior of these materials in sub${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ depth indentation tests using a diamond indentor. In this study it was developed Ultra-Micro Indentation. Device using the PZT actuator. Experimentally by using the Ultra-Micro Indentation device the micro fracture behavior of the silicon wafer was investigated. It was possible that ductile-brittle transition point in ultimate surface of brittle material can be detected by adding an acoustic emission sensor system to the Ultra-Micro Indentation appartus.
In the micro hole punching, the size and shape of burr and burnish zone are very important factors to evaluate quality of micro holes which depend on punch-die clearance, strain rate, workpiece material and etc. To get micro holes with small burr and wide burnish zone for industrial demands, not only the parametric study but also a study on fracture behavior in shear band are necessary. In this study, 100 $\mu$m, 25 $\mu$m micro holes in diameter were fabricated on brass (Cu63/Zn37) and SUS 316 foils as aspect ratio 1:1, and the characteristics of micro holes was investigated comparing with those of macro holes over several mm by scanning electron microscopic views and section views. Like macro hole, micro hole is also composed of 4 portions, rollover. burnish zone, fracture zone and burr, and it shows similar fracture behavior in shear band. But by high strain rate (10$^2$∼10$^3$s$^{-1}$ ) condition unlike that of macro hole fabrication and by the increment of relative grain size in the direction of the workpiece thickness, fracture zone is not observed.

Modified singular fracture process zone(S-FPZ) model is proposed in this paper to determine a fracture criterion for continuous crack propagation in concrete. The investigated fracture properties of the proposed fracture model are strain energy release rate at a micro-crack tip and the relationship between crack closure stress(CCS) and crack opening displacement(COD) in the FPZ. The proposed model can simulate the actual fracture energy of experimental results fairly well. The results of the experimental data analysis show that specimen geometry and loading condition did not affect the CCS-COD relation. However, the strain energy release rate is a function of not only specimen geometry but also crack extension. The strain energy release rate remained constantly at the minimum value up to the crack extension of 25 mm, and then it increased linearly to the maximum value. The maximum fracture criterion occurred at the peak load for specimens of large size. The fracture criterion remained at the maximum value after the peak load. The variation of the fracture criterion is caused by micro-cracking and micro-crack localization. The fracture criterion of strain energy release rate can simply be the size effect of concrete fracture, and it can be used to quantify the micro-cracking and micro-crack localizing behavior of concrete.

This paper presents the micro-mechanical modeling for predicting concrete behavior under compressive loading. The model is able to represent the heterogeneities in the microstructure up to three phases, i.e., aggregate particles, matrix and interfaces. The smeared crack concept based on non-linear fracture mechanics is implemented in order to formulate the constitutive relation for each component. The splitting tensile strength is considered as a fracture criterion for cracking in micro-level. The finite element method is employed to simulate the model based on plane stress condition by using quadratic triangular elements. The validation of the model is verified by comparing with the experimental results. The influence of tensile strength from both aggregate and matrix phases on the concrete compressive strength is demonstrated. In addition, a guideline on selecting appropriate tensile strength for each phase to obtain specified concrete compressive strength is also presented.

The estimation of fracture toughness in inhomogeneous material is still insufficient because it is difficult to get information of fracture initiation at the crack tip. Therefore, martensite-ferrite dual phase steel was prepared for a model material and micro-fracture behavior was investigated in the region of pre-fatigue crack in order to understand the characteristic of fracture resistance in inhomogeneous materials. In the case of severely inhomogeneous state, micro-fracture appearance is not distributed homogenously so that the estimation of fracture toughness is hardly possible. On the other hand when the grain size is refined or the strength of martensite is lowered, micro-fracture appearance is distributed homogenously and fracture toughness remarkably increases.

The fracture toughness and micro-fracture mechanisms of the porous glass and stainless fiber reinforced glass composite were evaluated by using the acoustice mission(AE) technique, fracture toughness $test(K_{IC})$ and the macroscopic observation of the specimen surface which was being under the loading. At initial portion of the loading, the AE signals with low energy, of which origins were considered as the micro-cracks formated at the crack tip, were emitted. With increasing the applied load, AE signals having higher energies were generated due to the coalesence of micro-cracks and fast fracture. Based on the such relationship between AE emission and loading condition, fracture toughness $K_{IAE}$ could be defined successfully be using the $K_I$ value corresponding to an abrupt change of the accumulated AE signal energies emitted during the fracture toughness test. In spite of its brittleness of glass material, nonlinear deformation behavior before maximum load was observed due to the formation of micro-cracks. Further, the stainless fiber may have attributed to the improvement of fracture toughness and the resistance to crack propagation comparing to noncomposited materials Finally, models of the micro-fracture process combined with the AE sources for the porous glass material and its composite were proposed paying attention to the micro-crack nucleation and its coalescence at the crack tip. Fiber fracture and its Pullout, deformation of fiber itself were also delinated from the model.

This paper is to investigate the micro-behavior of the double-span beams with WUF-W seismic connection under combined axial tension and moment and to propose the rational rotational capacity of it for progressive collapse-resistant analysis and design addressing the stress and strain transfer mechanism. To this end, the behavior of the double-span beams under the column missing event is first investigated using the advanced nonlinear finite element analysis. The characteristics of fracture indices of double-span beams with WUF-W connection under combined axial tension and flexural moment are addressed and then proposed the rational rotational capacity as the basic datum for the progressive collapse-resistant design and analysis. The distribution of fracture indices related to stress and strain for the double-span beams is investigated based on a material and geometric nonlinear finite element analysis. Furthermore, the micro-behavior for earthquake and progressive collapse is explicitly different.
This paper presents an effective and reliable evaluation method for fracture strength and material degradation of the micro-structure of high temperature service steel weldment using advanced small punch (ASP) test developed from conventional small punch (CSP) test. For the purpose of the ASP test, a lower die with a minimized ${\Phi}$1.5 mm diameter loading ball and an optimized deformation guide hole of ${\Phi}$3 mm diameter were designed. The behaviors of fracture energy (E$\_$sp/), ductile-brittle transition temperature (DBTT) and material degradation from the ASP test showed a definite dependency on the micro-structure of weldment. Results obtained from ASP test were compared and reviewed with results from CSP test, Charpy impact test, and hardness test. The utility and reliability of the proposed ASP test were verified by investigating fracture strength, behavior of DBTT, and fracture location of each micro-structure of steel weldment for test specimen in ASP test. It was observed that the fracture toughness in the micro-structure of FL+CGHAZ and ICHAZ decreased remarkably with increasing aging time. From studies of all micro-structures, it was observed that FGHAZ microstructure has the most excellent fracture toughness, and it showed absence of material degradation.

High strain-rate deformation behavior of NiAl/Ni micro-laminated composites was characterized by split hopkins on pressure bar(SHPB). When the strain rate increased, the compressive stress of micro-laminated composites were increased a little. When the intermetallic volume fraction increased, the compressive stress of micro-laminated composites increased linearly irrespective of strain rate. Absorbed energy during the quasi-static and SHPB tests was calculated from the integrated area of stress-strain curve. Absorbed energy of micro-laminated composites deviated from the linearity in terms of the intermetallic volume fraction but merged to the value of intermetallic as the strain rate increased. This was due to high tendency of intermetallic layer for the localization of shear deformation at high strain rate. Microstructure showing adibatic shear band(ASB) confirmed that the shear strain calculated from the misalignment angle of each layer increased and ASB width decreased when the intermetallic volume fraction. Simulation test impacted by tungsten heavy alloy cylinder resulted that the absorbed energies multiplied by damaged volume of micro-laminated composites were decreased as the intermetallic volume fraction increased. Fracture mode were changed from delamination to single fracture when the intermetallic volume fraction and this results were good matched with previous results[l] obtained from the fracture tests.
